Galactic Attack

Platform: Sega Saturn
Publisher: Acclaim
Genre: Shooter
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Galatic Attack, the very first installment along with Ray Storm and Ray Crisis, is arguably the best installment out of 3. It's so depressing for the fact that shooter genre is no longer mainstream in video gaming, however, if you are looking for a really good(I said REALLY GOOD)shooter and you still own Sega Saturn, then please get this game because you will thank me tremendously.
This very first installment, also known as Layer Section in Japan, set the standard way to high for its sequels to catch up with. The second installment, Ray Storm, did managed to catch its magic, with substandard-graphic-but-with-better-ending, however, last installment, Ray Crisis, falls flat on the ground.
The game is obviously very challenging, most challenging out of 3, and graphic is just sweet, JUST SWEET-. The music was done by Zuntata, whose work involve with Darius Gaiden and Ray Storm, and you can really tell and will be grateful.
If you look at the title of each stage, you will feel, almost feel that this is not just a mere shooter game, but because of that title you can almost sense the story line flowing as you go along. I think that's really something, being able to convey the feel of storyline just with title of each stage? You gotta play for yourself to see what I mean.
I remember playing this game again, again, and again to finish- it's really tough, you will have to put lot of time into it.
To be honest with you, I've literally played all the shooter games available on all the dominating console systems(ok, may be not all of them and I'm not being proud here), strictly 2D, and I would pick Galatic Attack as the best shooter in domestic gaming without any hesitation. What about graphically superior games like Silpheed for PS2? What about classics like Gradius 3&4? What about so called innovative Einheinder for PS? What about arguably best game for DC, Mars Matrix? Really, mark my word, Galatic Attack will just dominate them, not necessarily because it has better graphic or more innovative feature, it's will just blew away the competition because of its tight gameplay and all the thrill you will enjoy out of this shooter. Everyone has different taste on different games, but I LOVE SHOOTERS- I love shooters than any other genre and I'm proud to admit that(ok, again, not being proud here).
So if you are looking for a shooter (now, you will have to be REALLY WANTING for a GREAT shooter here..)with awesome graphic, intuitive music, palm-sweating gameplay, and making-you-playing-it-again-and-again challenging factor, with everything in balance to give you that masterpiece feel, look no further and pick this one of the best shooter of all time, really, I'm not joking here.
Well, I'm truly honored, truly honored to be the first one to review this game and I dedicate this review to Galatic Attack, one of the best shooters of all time! I know no one's gonna read this review since it's the game for deceased Sega Saturn, however, if you happened to read this and own Sega, then you know what to do, right? (mild smile)
Enjoy it-

Galerians

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: Crave Entertainment
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Borrowing heavily from Japanese sci-fi animation films like Akira, Galerians is a survival horror game with a twist. As Rion, a 14-year-old boy with powerful psychic abilities but no memories, players must explore a hostile cyberpunk world to unearth clues about Rion's mysterious past./ While gameplay mostly consists of exploration, combat, and puzzle solving, Rion's powers add an inspired--although somewhat disturbing--gameplay twist. In order to perform psychic attacks, Rion must inject himself with various chemicals. However, excessive use of his powers have an adverse effect on his health, which forces our adolescent junkie to ingest pills to counter the side effects./ Although Galerians's stylized, computer-generated cut scenes give the game a cinematic feel, there's an odd sense of discontinuity in this game. This is mostly caused by an annoying pause that occurs when your character moves between fixed camera viewpoints. In addition, there is a total lack of transitional graphics during the disc load times, which occur when Rion is opening doors and such. --Joe Hon/ Pros:/ • Intriguing storyline/ • Inspired--although somewhat disturbing--gameplay twist/ Cons:/ • Annoying pause when moving between fixed camera viewpoints/ • Lack of transitional graphics during load times between areas/

Game & Watch Gallery

Platform: Game Boy
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Kids & Family
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: I brought this game sometime between 1995-1997. I wondered at first what this game was so i did a little research on it. It turned out that back in the 80s, before the Gameboy era and the NES, there were games alled Game and Watch. Each Game came with its own handheld system. They were widely popular back then. Now they're back for a whole new generation that missed these games. In this first edition, there are Oil Panic, Fire, Octopus, and Manhole (the modern version my personal favorite). This game was great. The graphics on the Super Gameboy was awesome and the music that accompanied it was great too. Your goal is to obtain five stars in each mode (easy and hard) in each version (classic which are the originals and the modern which are the updated ones). In all you have to get 100 stars in the entire game. Once you accomplish that feat, (it took me 2 whole years to do it)there is a special ending (don't wanna spoil the surprise), so ya'll find out for yourselves...

Gauntlet Legends

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Midway
Genre: Third-Person Action
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Disc only
Edition: Summary: "Gauntlet Legends" could've been a fun, mindless, fantasy-themed "hack-'n'-slash" game if Midway had done anything to take advantage of the Dreamcast's hardware. Instead, they've created a game that relies a bit too heavily on the arcade version--that is to say, it looks mediocre, sounds terrible, and ultimately isn't very fun to play in solo mode.
"Gauntlet Legends" is a 3-D update of the classic "Gauntlet" arcade series. "Gauntlet" was famous for its hordes of enemies and the fact that up to four players could play cooperatively. The move to 3-D means there are far fewer enemies to fight (they take up too much processing horsepower), although the visuals have taken a turn for the better. If you've seen this game in the arcade, you'll know exactly what to expect when it loads on your Dreamcast; the translation is practically perfect. Unfortunately, the game didn't contain cutting-edge graphics in its arcade incarnation--so, don't expect too much in this home translation. The sound also deserves special mention, because it's awful. Everything sounds like it was recorded underwater with a cheap microphone--some actions aren't accompanied by sound effects at all.
"Gauntlet Legends"' gameplay is all action, but the lack of special moves makes it extremely repetitive. Solo players will be bored almost immediately, but the fun factor increases considerably when other players join the game. Four players blasting everything on the screen at once and fighting over power-ups make for some intense moments. If you're looking for a fun single-player game with a fantasy setting, you'd be better off with something like "Draconus: Cult of the Wyrm"--for dorm-room fun and parties, however, "Gauntlet Legends" is a sure bet. "--T. Byrl Baker"
Pros: Multiplayer action is fast and furious An arcade-perfect conversion Cons: Horrible audio Single-player game is boring

Golden Axe II

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Beat Em Up
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: As Golden Axe is one of my all-time favorite games, I was expecting great things of Golden Axe II. Unfortunately, it just doesn't live up to the original. For one thing, the graphics got uglier. Everything looks lo-res and very drab, though some of the enemies are nicely done. Another thing that sucks about this game is the sound and music: the sound is of the tinny "clink, clink, swish, swish" variety and the music sounds pretty bad. As with the original Golden Axe, you take control of a muscle-bound human warrior, a woman, or a dwarf. Sometimes I play the woman because I get my jollies off of seeing her videogame anatomy, though usually I play the dwarf, because he kicks ass.

Golden Sun

Platform: Game Boy Advance
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Role-Playing/ Adventure
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Cart Only
Edition: Summary: Golden Sun is the first original role-playing game for the Game Boy Advance to appear in the U.S. And despite perhaps a too-familiar story line, Golden Sun's jaw-dropping graphics, deep magic system, and unique multiplayer arena mode truly show that the Game Boy Advance is capable of a serious RPG./ Game developer Camelot (which also made the legendary Shining Force series for the Sega Genesis, and, more recently, Mario Golf and Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64) designed Golden Sun from the ground up to take advantage of the GBA's horsepower, and it shows. Sharp, vivid landscapes, detailed towns and dungeons, and awesome weather effects--it looks like a Super Nintendo game with some extra zing squeezed onto a handheld system. Fans of Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger will appreciate the feel of this game./ But the game's greatest strength is its magic system. Your characters each have their own latent psychic abilities based on one of the four elements of alchemy (earth, water, wind, and fire). The characters will be called upon to use their individual forms of telepathy and telekinesis to solve various puzzles in the game. Also, you can collect Djinn (elemental spirits) and link them to your characters. Not only can these Djinn be summoned in battle, they can also bolster or hinder your characters' latent psychic abilities, give them special attacks, and even change your characters' class. This system is similar to Final Fantasy VIII's guardian system, though far more intuitive and easy to master./ Golden Sun employs a basic turn-based battle system, but it has amazing spell and fighting techniques that really take advantage of the GBA's technology. The game achieves a nice balance between flashy attacks and the brevity of these same attacks--a lesson the makers of other RPGs should learn. Battles are beautifully and quickly fought, and don't overtax the gamer./ The game also has an addictive arena mode in which players can fight monsters they've already encountered in the game. Players can also link up with another GBA (this feature requires another Golden Sun cartridge) and fight against another party. While it's not true a multiplayer option, it adds a great replay value to the game./ Golden Sun's weakest point, however, is its standard-issue story. In essence: boy wakes up amidst disaster, meets stalwart friends, and rises to the challenge to save the day (all while living up to the image of his dear departed father). The story is a little stale, but the mechanics of the game transcend this flaw and bring the gamer into a state of handheld nirvana. --Bryan Karsh/ Pros:/ • Vivid graphics/ • Deep, intuitive magic system/ • Addictive multiplayer arena mode/ Cons:/ • A plot straight out of "RPG Story Lines 101"/

Gradius III and IV

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Shooter
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Every console system pays homage to the past, even as consumers leap into the future. The Dreamcast hosted various Midway and Namco arcade packages, and there was the famous (or infamous, depending on how you feel about 2-D space shooters) "GigaWing". Sony and Konami are getting into the act by bringing the "Gradius" series to PlayStation2--at launch, no less. While it gives many, if not most, people a significant "warm, fuzzy" feeling to revisit the past, one can make a strong case that developing a PS2 version of "Gradius III & IV" was more about padding the launch lineup.
If you're a fan of the side-scrolling-shooter genre, however, this edition likely will please you. It has almost everything that a trigger-happy arcade hound could want: rapid-fire framerate, lots of color and animation, and that wonderful '80s feel. It also has some of the glitz that younger video game fans demand, such as two completely new CG intro videos that look pretty dang cool.
Konami has pulled out all of the stops in revamping the look of the gameplay, too. The two games now are quite polygonally charged and texturally sophisticated. The graphics now use environmental mapping, and polygon morphing makes the animation very smooth. Another nice feature, especially for a game like "Gradius" is that a stage-selection mode and a continue feature have been added to allow players to go back to wherever they want to start over, revisit, and/or practice a tricky spot.
While it might not register in the minds of those of us who are addicted to high-profile launch games like "Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore", "Gradius III & IV" might be good to buy for casual gamers of all ages and skill ranges, since Konami has added modes for beginners and advanced players. Everyone from granny to baby brother should be able to pick up this title and thrash right out of the box. "--Todd Mowatt"
Pros: Enhanced gameplay nostalgia New stage-selection and continue features Cons: Appealing to casual gamers and fans of the genre only

Grand Theft Auto IV

Platform: Xbox 360
Publisher: Rockstar Games
Genre:
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Beginning with the 1997 release of the original "Grand Theft Auto", the "GTA" series has been one of the most prolific, controversial and down right entertaining franchises in video games history. This pedigree of success guarantees that the highly anticipated eleventh game in the series, "Grand Theft Auto IV", will garner at least as much attention if not more.

"Niko's American Dream. View larger."

"Get behind the wheel with Niko. View larger."

"Liberty City is your for the taking. View larger." The Plot"Grand Theft Auto IV" is a brand new adventure in the "GTA" universe following the experiences of Nikolai "Niko" Bellic, a new immigrant from an undisclosed eastern European! country whose troubled past and the persuasion of his cousin Roman have brought him to the fictional Liberty City. Unfortunately, Niko's search of the American Dream and a much needed fresh start hits an immediate snag when the rags to riches story Roman spun to pique Niko's interest is exposed as not only a complete fabrication, but a ploy to enlist Niko's well-known skills as a tough guy against the ample list of enemies clamoring for Roman's debt-ridden blood. Because Roman is the only person Niko knows in Liberty City he begrudgingly accepts his role as Roman's protector despite the deception. But as time goes on Niko comes into his own, and his experience on the wrong side of the tracks proves more valuable than he could have ever imagined as he fights for survival and later supremacy on the crime ridden streets of Liberty City. Game Environments Based on several of the boroughs of New York City and parts of New Jersey, Liberty City, familiar to players of previous games in the series, has been entirely redesigned for "GTA IV". Players can expect visible detail down to the weeds growing in the cracks in the sidewalk, cars and buildings of visibly different ages and a much greater level if verticality in the buildings and bridges that they are able to explore as Niko moves through the city streets. In addition, pedestrians in "GTA IV" are much more realistic. No longer simply moving cardboard cutouts, these NPCs are intelligent, modern, human representations that laugh, cry, eat, drink, use cell phones and ATMs, and talking amongst themselves regardless of Niko's interaction with them. Gameplay Historically "GTA" games have focused heavily on mission-based play, requiring successful completion of fixed tasks in order for players to progress through the game, but this has changed in to a ! great extent in "GTA IV". Players will experience an entirely new and exciting emphasis centered on the blending of on-mission and off-mission play, resulting not only in an increased sense of realism, but more interesting and unrestricted gameplay. Features Official features for "GTA IV" have yet to be released. Stay tuned for more information as the game's release in early '08 draws nearer.

Grand Theft Auto: Collector's Edition

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: Rockstar Games
Genre: Third-Person Action
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: This is a pack of three Grand Theft Auto titles for PlayStation./ Grand Theft Auto places you in the role of a common street thug whose job is to carry out the will of ruthless crime bosses. Stealing cars and settling drug deals are just some of your dirty tasks as you run, gun, steal, and drive through three different crime-infested cities. Fail and you get cussed out by your superiors. Succeed and you rise through the ranks of the organization, get more respect, and tackle tougher missions./ In Grand Theft Auto: London Mission Pack, if you want to stay legal, you'll want to stay on the left side of the road. You'll also be entering and exiting vehicles on the right side of the car. All the speech has been replaced with the slang and accents you'd expect to find in London around 1969. The music has also been completely revamped, and it fits the scenario nicely. The graphics are mostly new as well, providing new textures for buildings (it seems there were a lot of pubs in London back then) and new cars, including an Austin Powers-esque ride, complete with accompanying secret-spy music./ Grand Theft Auto 2 is, for the most part, a collection of enhancements to the original game. The graphics have been redone, the music is different, there is a slew of new weapons, the mission structure is a bit more complex, and the city feels more alive. There are three levels in GTA2. Each level is divided into three areas of turf, controlled by a different gang. The gangs range from the ever unpopular megacorporation, Zaibatsu, to the dirt-road mobile-home-owning Rednecks./

Grandia

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: Sony
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: If you can put up with the cutesy graphics, Grandia is one of the longest, most compelling, and most character-driven role-playing games you'll ever spin in your PlayStation. By the time we finished this massive quest, we really cared about the game's characters. (By comparison, our interest in Final Fantasy VII was focusing more on getting from one transition movie scene to the next)./ The main story line is standard role-playing fare. The powerful General Baal has plans to unleash something of a Pandora's box on the world, and you can guess whose job it is to stop him. Grandia provides a world packed with colorful characters who are fun to talk to, and the unconventional combat system lets players pick and choose their fights. The characters in your party grow, as do their magical skills and weapons, meaning there's always some new accomplishment just around the corner that keeps players adventuring long into the night. Role-playing fans should be overjoyed that this conversion from the Sega Saturn classic was made, as it provides weeks of solid adventuring that never becomes a chore. --T. Byrl Baker/ Pros:/ • An entertaining adventure with loads of interesting characters/ • Characters, weapons, and spells all improve with experience/ Cons:/ • Quirky, cutesy graphics won't appeal to everybody/

Grandia II

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: UbiSoft
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Missing Manual
Edition: Summary: See if this story line sounds familiar. You're part of an outcast mercenary class that upstanding folk don't want around until there's trouble. You're sent on a mission alongside an innocent, idealistic woman with whom you don't immediately get along. Forces of darkness, safely contained until recently, have escaped and are threatening a world-ending clash with the forces of light unless you successfully intercede. This is one of the safest templates for console role-playing games, and it pretty much covers the story in Grandia II./ Thankfully, everything else in the game is fresh and provides hours upon hours of fun. The backdrops and character designs are colorful without being flashy, the game has a great pace (for an RPG), and players never have to stand around too long looking for the next thing to do. Even the writing, within its cookie-cutter plot, is smart, well translated, and occasionally funny./ The game's strongest element, however, is its battle system. Taking the best of turn-based and real-time battle engines, Grandia II forces you to choose your moves carefully with respect to timing and position. The battles are very simple in the beginning, but grow increasingly complex as you fight larger numbers of monsters with a growing party of allies. How you meet your encounters--whether you initiate the fight, are ambushed, or meet head on--affects both the timing of the blows and the positions of the contestants. Battles emphasize counterattacks and combination blows, but you'll soon find that movement and defense keep you alive against the tougher enemies. Elemental magic, items, and skill books are just icing on the cake. Even if the battles do grow old, the random fights are fairly easy to avoid, and a versatile AI option lets you use cruise control through the rest./ Grandia II may be just the traditional role-playing game for which Dreamcast owners have been waiting. The question of whether it's too traditional doesn't matter, as it offers a better experience than most that have come before. --Porter B. Hall/ Note: This review refers to the Dreamcast version of the game./ Pros:/ • Battle system creates interesting, complex fights/ • Solid, traditional role-playing game for a system with few others in the genre/ Cons:/ • Predictable plot and characters/

Guardian Heroes

Platform: Sega Saturn
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Guardian Heroes was both the first and the last Saturn game i played. This game was so good i want to buy a Saturn just so i could play it again. The characters and enemies are 2D hand-drawn sprites done with a great anime style. The fighting takes place in a semi-3D battleground. The characters move forward in a traditional arcade sense, but also have the options of jumping to different levels of the battlefield. Kind of like jumping into the background>(It's hard to explain, but they pull it off real well). All of the fighters have a fair amount of moves and even magic, which they execute much like a fighting game like Street Fighter. Magic is awesome. Some of the characters can even fire giant beams and throw around huge balls of energy, like DBZ. Multi-player is awesome. This is what makes the game so addicting. After beating the game about three times or so (Did i mention there's well over 40 endings??), you should have about, oh, 60 characters to choose from. Now heres what you do...pick your opponents, put them on hard, giving them an insane amount of life, and use a cheat code that gives YOU an insane amount of life. The one battle will last at least half an hour! 30 minutes of straight white-knuckle action...what more do you want?? Not only that, but some of the characters are just plain sweet. You can even play as a huge dragon being that takes up a quarter of the screen! Buy now! Before i do!!

Gunbird 2

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Capcom
Genre: Shooter
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Reviewers who say this lasted 10 minutes and finished it are simply "fibbing". On the Normal difficulty setting, even shooter veterans usually have a hard time finishing this game in a few hours of trying. That's finishing ONCE! Then you take into account that there are over 20 entirely unique endings to the game (2 for each character plus unique endings when you play as two alternating characters). These aren't just "Congratulations" screens, but hilarious, very Japanese-quirky character endings.
And THEN you have the old-school emphasis on scoring, as in a judgement of capability at playing challenging videogames. This isn't an RPG or Resident Evil where any moron can run around until a pat solution is stumbled upon. If you can't meet the thumb-blistering demands here, you lose. Sure, you can knock down the difficulty setting and win more easily but there is an honor system built-in. Playing less than Level 4 (out of 7) difficulty and you're not able to go through to round 2 no matter how good you become. And on Level 4 or higher, just try to earn even ONE free ship at 600,000 points. Just try...!
But most importantly, this shooter is fun. It takes the omnipresent Raiden/1942/military-style 2D shooter design but injects it with Capcom-type characters from the whackier side of things. It is also perfect for hard-working older gamers, allowing a pick-up-and-play blastathon between bursts of necessary activity. Though if playing on Level 5 Normal or more there usually isn't time to see the ending (you'll likely need many, many attempts to get through the games 5th-End Levels, as continuing starts you back at the beginning of these difficult stages, not where one "dies").

Gungrave

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Third-Person Action
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: The name of our dead hero is Grave. The name of the game is Style. From the opening stab of jazz in the titles to the metal coffin chained to our hero's arms, Gungrave roils in hard-boiled cell-shaded .50-calibur style. The gameplay is the heir to many button-masher arcade games, offering an instantly gratifying gaming experience. Twin guns--called Cerberos--pound destruction to swarms of "syndicate" enemies and many objects in your environment. The coffin can be swung around to hammer foes at close range. The shots from the Cerberos can ring singly or as a spinning fountain in Grave's bullet dance. If you can keep a steady stream of destruction, your beat count goes up, and you generate demolition-shot special attacks and abilities which can restore life to Grave or serve damage like piping-hot fire to his enemies./ Gungrave is inaccurately compared to Devil May Cry. The games share some style points but otherwise have nothing in common. Grave's controls only permit him the most cursory of acrobatics. He can dive à la Max Payne, but his normal gait is the shuffle of a zombie. In an original twist on controller schemes, he can move at regular walking speed via the L3 (pressing down on the joystick) but this kink quickly loses its novelty as it is difficult to hold and feels as if it will damage the controller. Unfortunately, the instant gratification this game brings is short lived. At about two hours of play, it clocks in as one of the shortest, as well as most repetitive, games available. --Ashley Pond V/ Pros:/ • Fabulous style and arcade action/ • Minimal load times/ • Easy to jump into/ Cons:/ • Too short/ • Shallow and repetitive gameplay/

Gunstar Heroes

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Shooter
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: Undoubtadly the best game to ever grace Sega's 16-bit Genesis, Gunstar Heroes was, and still is to this day, one of the best simple minded action games ever produced. Bearing resemblance to Konami's Contra games and other "run 'n gun" type games, the gameplay is pretty basic. You run around with automatic firing weapons blowing away the hordes and hordes of enemies that get into your way. You'll find plenty of different power ups that quickly change the pace of the game, but the two player mode is where the real fun of Gunstar Heroes is to be had. For back in it's day, the graphics were great, and today they still hold up for a 2-D side scroller shooter. Controls are incredibly easy and you know what to do from the minute you pop in the cartridge and play. The sound and music is the game's only lowpoint, but most of that can be blamed on the Genesis' poor soundchip (remember, this system was known for having shabby sound). All in all though, Gunstar Heroes is still one of the greatest action games of all time, and if you still have a Genesis and don't have this game, you should do all you can to track it down.
