Earthworm Jim

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher:
Genre: 2D Platformer
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: I remember when I first seen the news about Earthworm Jim in one of my Sega Visions magazines. I thought at first that it wouldn't ever be that good of a game because I thought it was crazy that an action/adventure game about a worm would be a big hit. When I finally played it, I found out that I couldn't have been more wrong about it. It's more fun than a lot of the other action games I've played and it became one of my favorites. At the time it had some of the best graphics I had ever seen. Everything about the game is as original as a game can get. You can either fight your enemies with several different kinds of guns or you can take Earthworm Jim and slap him at the enemies. The bosses range from a cat that's on the loose to a man that is hanging on a chain that spits raw fish at you. There's also a fun bonus level where you race against Psy-crow in outer space. The levels are also unique and range from a fire level that's just like a maze to a level where you run around with a marshmallow and try to save puppies from going splat on the ground. There's also a bungee jumping level and an underground water level where you have to keep from hitting the side too much in your ship.
Everything about "Earthworm Jim" is great. It has some of the best graphics from the 16-bit era of video games, great control, it's a lot of fun, and it can even be hilarious when you let Earthworm Jim just stand around and watch what he does. If you have a Sega Genesis and if you like action/adventure games, "Earthworm Jim" is one of the best games you could get.

Earthworm Jim 3D

Platform: Nintendo 64
Publisher: Rockstar Games
Genre: 3D Platformer
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: The world's favorite spineless superhero returns in a 3-D adventure that, at first glance, appears to be a worthy successor to the original 16-bit version of this classic action arcade game. However, there's no squirming past the squeamish truth of Earthworm Jim 3D--this game suffers from the dreaded bad camera angle syndrome. EWJ could have been a sleeper hit, but unless you have a strong tolerance for frustration, it's recommended that you avoid this one./ A trademark feature of all EWJ games is the title character's ongoing (and highly unfortunate) collision with cows--and this adventure is no different. The wiggly worm gets smacked in the cranium with a certain bovine and ends up in a cow-induced coma. So, the game takes place within Jim's mind, where he must collect his marbles in order to awaken again./ Despite having decently colored (but far from spectacular) graphics and a surprisingly cool soundtrack, EWJ is often unplayable. In a fully 3-D game that features so much running, jumping, and searching for goodies, a good view of the action is most important. But here, you'll spend way too much time attempting to manually adjust the camera. This, of course, is never any fun. And even if you decide to risk your sanity and play, you'll find a game that really doesn't improve on the 3-D gameplay standards of the N64 classic Super Mario World./ With a bit more work, this could've been at least marginally interesting. As it is, EWJ is better off buried underground with the other worms. --Mark Brooks/ Pros:/ • Decent graphics that are brightly colored/ • Odd mishmash of music styles that fits the wackiness of the gaming world/ Cons:/ • Simply horrendous camera that requires too much manual input to be of any use/ • Uninspired gameplay gives EWJ a rather tired feeling/ • Possibility of a sequel has us terrified/

Ehrgeiz

Platform: Playstation

Genre: 3D Fighting
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition:
Edition: Summary: With a fighting mode, four mini-games, and a stand-alone role-playing game (RPG), Ehrgeiz is essentially six games for the price of one. First, duke it out as one of 10 playable characters (3 of which are from the popular RPG Final Fantasy VII) in hand-to-hand and weapons-based combat. There are 11 different fighting environments to tackle, including a moving train and a hovering airship. Ehrgeiz scores points for diversity. The arsenal of warriors is comprised of various ages, nationalities, and sexes--all of whom are eager to win the ultimate fighting championship. The prize is a mysterious weapon (the strangely dubbed Ehrgeiz). There are a gazillion moves to memorize, and the fluid movement and fantastic secret weapons provide great eye candy./ In addition to fighting, players will also encounter mini-games, such as the foot race "Battle Beach" and strategy game "Battle Panel" (think Othello). This game also contains several elements that will be instantly familiar to RPG fans. Ehrgeiz may not satisfy gamers who want a dedicated RPG or fighting game, but it does offer a diverse range of gameplay for the casual gamer with a limited attention span. --Carrie Bell/ Pros:/ • Fighter movement animation is impressive/ • Final Fantasy connection will appeal to RPG fans/ • Diverse gameplay/ Cons:/ • Numerous special moves impose a steep learning curve, and demand a good memory/

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: Bethesda
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is a sprawling, first person, open-ended fantasy role-playing game. It's a direct port of the PC version, and truly shows off the power of the Xbox./ Morrowind can be described with a single word: mind-numbingly-massive (okay, I cheated). You can do virtually anything you want. There is a main quest, but there are also hundreds of side quests (over 350 of them), and the game is completely nonlinear. You can be a hero, a villain, a pilgrim, a saint, or even a vampire. You name it, and chances are you can be it. There are also no geographical constraints; you can wander where you want, when you want./ The amount of control you have in Morrowind is stunning. When you create a character, you can either choose from premade classes, have one assigned to you depending on how you answer a questionnaire, or create your own class. You can also choose one of 13 signs under which your character is born, which will give you bonuses, handicaps, or both. There are so many stats and skills to accumulate, you can easily spend hours experimenting with character types before you even start the game./ Morrowind's magic system brings a tear to my eye--not only do you have seven schools of magic (Conjuration, Illusion, Destruction, Restoration, Mysticism, Alteration, Enchant), but you also have an alchemy system, from which you can create potions from ingredients you can either buy or find in the wild. In addition, you can trap the souls of enemies you kill and bind them into items to create magic artifacts. Very cool. And of course, there are all the scrolls, magical items, etc., that you find in your travels./ Another boon is the thieving system. You can pick locks, disarm traps, pick pockets, and learn acrobatics. You can taunt, insult, or intimidate others as well as haggle for better deals in the market. And since you can steal (or try to steal) almost every item you see, business is good! This game was designed with a thief's eye./ The game itself is gorgeous. The graphics, sound, frame rate... all smooth as silk. You can spend hours just looking at the outlandish scenery and picking the flowers (literally). The musical score is rousing, and never gets old. The different creatures and people have their own voices and sounds. This is a game that makes anything but high-end computers cry, and it works on the Xbox without a hitch./ Okay, so Bethesda's Morrowind sounds like the greatest thing since... well... Bethesda's Elder Scrolls II, but does it have any flaws? Well, Morrowind is definitely geared toward magic users and thieves, but it is lacking when it comes to fighting. There are many battles in Morrowind, but they boil down to clicking your button and hitting your foe with either a melee or missile weapon. That's it. Combat gets old fast. In addition, the travel journal is purely elementary. It lists all the quests you undertake, but there is no way to sort them, or erase quests that you have finished. After a while, it takes a long time to find information. This is probably the biggest flaw in the game./ Bottom line: Morrowind is a PC-style RPG for a PC-style console. This game is reason enough to buy an Xbox, and will have hard-core RPG fans singing its praises for years to come. --Bryan Karsh/ Pros:/ • Thief and magic-user heaven/ • Do whatever you want/ • Beautiful graphics and sound/ Cons:/ • Simplistic battle system/ • Can't sort//edit quests in travel journal/

Enclave

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: Vivendi Universal Games
Genre: Third-Person Action
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition:
Edition: Summary: Enclave is an exhilarating but difficult first-person role-playing game--a gritty, up-close-and-personal Diablo meets Halo experience. The basic action takes place in a dark and chaotic landscape torn apart by the rift--a bottomless crevasse magically created to surround the lone city of Celenheim, and keep it protected from the dark Outlanders. Your first mission, the Mission of Light, is to prevent the Outlanders from invading the city. As a fun side note, when you win the game for Celenheim, you can turn around and play as an Outlander./ You start the game as a knight. As the levels progress, you acquire various other characters which play pivotal roles in your ability to get through each one alive. In true Dungeons and Dragons style, you prep for each level by gearing up your character and purchasing the items you think you'll need. Character selection is important as each mission has unique challenges, tends to be long, and is usually impossible to save once in progress--which brings us to the game's only major downfall. Unless you're a patient and skilled gamer, you're likely to get frustrated by not being able to get past difficult levels within one or two attempts. Many levels need to be approached half a dozen times or more, using different character and equipment combinations. Personally, we enjoyed that challenge, though this might not be true for everyone. --Sung Nicholas Kim/ Pros:/ • Beautiful graphics/ • Engrossing story line/ • Challenging gameplay means it takes a long time to win/ Cons:/ • A difficultly level that some may find frustrating/ • Infrequent opportunities to save within a given level/ • Numerous small typographical bugs and behaviors, particularly on the Character Equip screens/

Ephemeral Fantasia

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Konami made a very strange decision when it chose to release this game in the U.S. While the selection of role-playing games for the PS2 is currently limited, Konami could have selected from a number of strong RPGs it has published in Japan. Instead, the company serves up a mediocre offering in Ephemeral Fantasia, a game that's originality is negated by frustrating and difficult gameplay, making it appealing only to hard-core RPG fans./ Unlike most RPGs, you won't be controlling a warrior. Instead you follow the adventures of a bard named Mouse. Some of Mouse's occupation-related tasks include composing songs and playing rhythm games similar to Konami's Guitar Freaks. Most of the game has Mouse reliving the same day over and over (think Groundhog Day). Although he's stuck in a time loop, he retains the items and allies acquired each time he relives the day. It's an interesting twist, but the plot eventually devolves into the usual saving-the-world drivel./ The game's graphics aren't going to impress anyone--there are several PS One games that look better. Further hampering playability are several lulls in the game where you have to wait until a certain time before you can progress. This wouldn't be so bad if there were engaging side quests for you to take, but there aren't, so you're often stuck standing around town. When the action does pick up, it's often brought to a halt by extremely long load times. These frustrating aspects combined with the game's difficulty make it a poor choice for casual gamers. --Raymond M. Padilla/ Pros:/ • Innovative combat system/ • Several attempts at originality/ • Cool minigames/ Cons:/ • Poor graphics/ • Excruciating load times/ • Very difficult/

Escape From Monkey Island

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: Lucas Arts
Genre: Adventure
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: In a world dominated by grim and gritty console games, it's difficult to find a madcap adventure about the triumphs of a goofball would-be pirate. Yet that's exactly what we have in Escape from Monkey Island. This PC port follows the latest misadventures of Guybrush Threepwood as he tries to make sense of his ridiculous world. The PC-style gameplay consists of conversing, exploring, and lots of puzzle solving. Gamers who lack patience or who loathe Myst-like puzzles might want to skip this game, but they'll be missing on one of the most unique console experiences on the market./ The game's forte is clearly its style. Its dialogue, while sometimes lengthy, is often witty and boisterously entertaining. Its characters and environments are bright and vibrant. Its puzzles--in which you often match wacky objects in bizarre situations--are straight out of a Looney Tunes cartoon. Few games can match Escape from Monkey Island's humor, and none of them are on the PlayStation2./ Although the character designers and animators were able to achieve a playful style, some of the series' personality was lost in the translation from 2-D sprite-based graphics to 3-D polygons. Still, there's really nothing else like it on the PlayStation2. Gamers looking for something different or wanting to take a break from saving the world from cataclysmic menaces should give this game a shot. --Raymond M. Padilla/ Pros:/ • A unique, lighthearted, hilarious adventure/ • Playful graphics/ • Side-splitting dialogue/ Cons:/ • Some puzzles are tricky, with unobvious solutions/ • Myst-like gameplay mechanics may bore some players/ • Some conversations are unnecessarily long/

Evolution 2: Far Off Promise

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Ubi Soft
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Disc only
Edition: Summary: This game begins where Evolution 1 left off.A funny train scene begins and you're off into the world of Mag Launcher.
The main strength of this game is the characters. All of them are loveable. It's very easy to feel like you're right there with them. They all express emotions very well.Never did they feel like tools to get to the end of the game.
The story is a very simple bad guy vs good guy one.Comments such as "This is no Final Fantasy" are not a very accurate way of decribing this game.Of course this is no FF.What do you expect?Anyways, the story does not go overboard with dark pasts. It's very suitable for children. And While the story itself is somewhat lackluster, the adoreable characters work to keep it from getting too dull.
The gameplay revolves around going into various dungeons, fighting monsters, asending to higher levels, learning new attacks, while progressing through the game.
The dungeons themselves are sometimes quite long.Make sure you have a few hours of time before entering a new one.The good news is there are no random battles.Enemies are clearly visible and you may try and run away from them if you wish.I wish the developers put a little more effort into the scenery(Or lack there of). There is really nothing more to look at than the same ol walls.
The battles are kinda fun for it just being a simple turn based system. There are a lot more skills, magic, techniques, ect to learn than in games such as Grandia 2 or Skies of Arcadia. It makes you want to level up to learn them all.
The only real complaint I have is that this game is far too simple. It could've been a huge sleeper hit if these characters weren't trapped in such a simple world.Everything, but the character designs are simplistic.
I would say that this game is good for anyone who wants an RPG just to fight monsters, learn cool attacks, level up and save the world. If you're looking for a deep storyline and a more complex battle system,go buy Skies of Arcadia or Grandia 2.

Evolution Worlds

Platform: GameCube
Publisher: UBI Soft
Genre: Kids & Family
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Missing manual
Edition: Summary: Sure, it's no Final Fantasy- but it's a bargain bin title by now, and that's exactly where this game should have started in the first place. Great graphics, a fun story, and excellent creativity, all wrapped up in a tiny little package that's perfect when you can get it cheap.

I was a fan of Evolution from its Dreamcast days, when it joined a few other titles (Grandia, Skies of Arcadia) in setting the tone for a new kind of RPG that has since (sadly) all but vanished. Cute characters and interesting story elements are used in an excellently done 3d world- and things are left intentionally cartoony just to add to the fun. I kept catching myself thinking I needed a bowl of popcorn to fully enjoy some of the moments- you just feel like you're being sucked into an amazing cinematic joyride from time to time.

But enough ranting- Join our hero Mag Launcher and his weapon of choice, which is basically a giant extending hand he keeps in a backpack. Journey into (randomly generated!) dungeons and collect treasure, defeat enemies, and take down the bosses that lord over every dungeon. Mag's butler joins you on your adventures, as well as a cast of females ranging from some of this world's greatest explorers to the quiet healing-magic-type girl you grew up with.

It's a pretty cheesy storyline (save the girl, save the day), but it's executed so well. The characters are likable, the situations fun, and the adventures are pretty epic.

Just make sure you're not expecting too much (as said, it's no Final Fantasy), and you'll have a blast. The Evolution series of games are nice, cute, short (I defeated one version in one setting) games that will leave you wondering when you'll be able to catch the next installment. It's the same sort of "X" factor that reminds you of oldschool stories like Flash Gordon and the series that once inspired Star Wars- you just always want to see more.

Overall: It's a nice, quick romp through a colorful world that'll leave you satisfied- if you know what you're getting. It's perfect for kids and people who've never tried an RPG before, or long-time RPG fans who just want a break from the "serious" RPGs where you're likely to waste days or weeks of gameplay on subquests.

I just wish the folks who cranked out Evolution could get together and make more of these games, or maybe one long game to get a fuller experience out of this world. Please- developers, if you're reading this- MAKE MORE EVOLUTION!!! If you see one of these titles in the bargain / used bins at your local game store, I just can't reccomend them highly enough.

It was just too amazing. I started noticing all the awesome features and attacks, and all of it was just a truley awesome experiance. Needless to say I bought it the next morning!

Expendable

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Infogrames
Genre: Shooter
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Fans of the old arcade hit "Smash TV" will most likely enjoy "Expendable". The rest of us may want to look elsewhere. While the game boasts impressive graphics and really shows off the lighting and color abilities of the Dreamcast, repetitive single-player gameplay quickly leads to boredom.
You control an expendable clone soldier from a third-person perspective. The game is divided into missions, each mission having roughly the same goal: blow everything up and run to the end as fast as possible. Along the way, you fight hordes of mindless aliens, rescue hostages, and play with your choice of 18 powerful weapons. If you have an additional controller, a friend can join in the mayhem. The game saves your progress with the optional Visual Memory Unit and also makes use of the optional Jump Pack, which vibrates to indicate hits and explosions. While "Expendable" won't win any awards for creativity, depth, or longevity, sometimes you just want to team up with a buddy and kick alien butt. For those times, "Expendable" does just fine. "--Michael Fehlauer"
Pros: Brilliant graphics Chaotic, rampaging two-player cooperative play Over-the-top weapons Cons: Mindless "run and gun" gameplay Repetitive single-player game
