D

Platform: Sega Saturn
Publisher: Acclaim
Genre: Adventure
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: I really like this game. It's one of the better games out there (not that I can compare with many Saturn games). It is really scary. As the back cover suggests, "Don't play this game in the dark." I played it in the dark and when I saw a reflection of the player in the mirror I got really scared. The bad part about it is that there is no actual kind of moving (I.E. Resident Evil walking). It is all in movies. Another aspect of the game is that it is really hard. Such as, in a part where you have to find a screw thing, you have to open drawer 2, then drawer 4, then drawer 2 to get the paper. My solution : I got a walkthrough from... under playstation cheats. It's the same game on the Saturn.

D2

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher:
Genre: Third-Person Action
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: The long-delayed cinematic adventure game "D2" has finally surfaced on the Dreamcast. Despite several years in development by innovative Japanese game design team Warp, "D2" seems to suffer from a lack of solid gameplay. Fortunately, the gaming environment is stunning to look at.
"D2" offers gamers a curious combination of adventurous exploration and first-person shooting. Gamers assume the role of airplane crash survivor Laura (not to be confused with game icon Lara Croft of "Tomb Raider" infamy). The game begins with Laura embarking on an airplane flight that soon goes horribly wrong. The plane is hijacked by a handful of terrorists--but that effort is foiled when a meteor crashes into the plane. Laura emerges as one of the few survivors of the plane wreck, which has occurred somewhere in the mountains of Canada. Laura must try to survive the icy elements by routinely killing and cooking cute bunnies for food as she travels through the snowy terrain. Animal activists might object to the casual nature of these deaths, which are essential to winning the game.
Several tentacle-wielding creatures attack Laura frequently during her travels. When this occurs, the game immediately shifts from third-person to first-person perspective. While these point-and-shoot segments are challenging at first, they soon become tedious. It is impossible to travel more than a few feet without being attacked--and Laura must travel quite a bit to advance the game. Despite the presence of impressive graphics, these action segments amount to little more than a glorified version of the mass-market PC game "Deer Hunter".
Still, the ambitious world of "D2" is worth a look and a listen. This game is highly stylized in design, including several artistic cinema sequences that will keep you riveted. A stunning new age-meets-opera soundtrack accompanies the title screen, while creepy instrumental music adds tension in all the right places.
With an awkward balance of both adventure and action elements, "D2" ultimately succeeds more as a curiosity than a remarkable gaming coup. "--Brett Atwood"
Pros: Art-house appeal for eclectic gamers High-quality animation Cons: Awkward gameplay Tedious and repetitious action sequences

Dark Cloud 2

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: What's creepier than a sinister clown? Nothing, as it turns out, which is probably why the makers of Dark Cloud 2 made their evil villain a member of the circus family. After all, a clown who lifts the town's friendly mayor off his feet--with a strangle hold--is not to be messed with./ Welcome to the world of Dark Cloud 2. Stylistically, it resembles a Holly Hobbie Colorforms set. All the characters are of childlike proportions, and the village's Tudor buildings seem pried from a Yorkshire hamlet. While Maximillian, the preteen hero, wanders around his hometown, Parisian accordion MIDI music serenades him. Though this is not a kid's game (it carries a Teen ESRB rating), gamers who are put off by kitschy//cute nuances should beware--this game is loaded with them./ But at its heart, Dark Cloud 2 is a wonderfully solid RPG. Its story has three main elements: Max's lost mother, the secret of what's going on outside the village, and why the evil clown wants Max's red stone pendant. Fighting takes place in real time, unlike the turn-based fighting in the similar Final Fantasy series. This was a good decision on behalf of the designers, as was the attention to weapon customizing. And if you love to manage inventory (there aren't many RPG fans that don't), this is your game. Not only can Max's weapons be upgraded, but by taking pictures and tinkering, he can create tools from scratch, in seemingly endless variations./ There's so much more to this game than can be described in any review. Along the way, for example, Max meets up with Monica, a princess from the future. He may build a village using the Georama system, or he may just want to do a little fishing--to say more would be to spoil the fun, but you get the idea. You'll just have to discover it all--and there is a tremendously rich world here--on your own. --Jennifer Buckendorff/ Pros:/ • Multi-layered world with strong replayability/ • Intuitive game controls/ • Strong inventory management and interesting items/ • Great, playful aspects, like Steve the "ridepod"/ Cons:/ • Painfully slow, almost hour-long introduction/ • Some repetitiveness in weapon upgrading and dungeon maps/ • Hokey gestures and dialogue/

Dead or Alive 2

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Tecmo
Genre: 3D Fighting
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: While you may not be familiar with the original "Dead or Alive"--a run-of-the-mill fighting game most famous for the bouncing breasts of its female combatants--the sequel "Dead or Alive 2" is a major-league contender that ranks up there with genre giants (including "Soul Calibur" and the "Tekken" series).
"Dead or Alive 2" features drop-dead gorgeous visuals, with gracefully animated 3-D characters rendered in great (and in some cases, downright naughty) detail. Not merely scenic backdrops, the lavish 3-D arenas are also highly interactive: fighters get slammed and thrown against walls, and, in some cases, they can be thrown through windows and off ledges, with the camera viewpoint following the aggressor as he or she jumps down to the lower level of the arena to continue the punishment.
A game that plays as good as it looks, "Dead or Alive 2" sports a rich combat system that's heavy on the counterattacks. Gameplay moves along at a blazingly fast pace, and the simple controls are easy to pick up on and make executing combo moves a breeze; this is a brawler that both button-mashers and hardcore gamers will enjoy.
Unlike other fighting games which contain hidden features that must be "unlocked," "Dead or Alive 2" pretty much lays all its cards out on the table from the start. There are 12 fighters to choose from (each with at least one alternate costume) and seven modes of play are available (including tag battle mode and a two-on-two battle royal that up to four players can join). "--Joe Hon"
Pros:
Drop-dead gorgeous visuals Blazingly fast gameplay; simple yet effective controls Highly interactive 3-D arenas 7 modes of play, including tag battle mode Cons:
Virtually none to speak of

Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: Tecmo
Genre: Sports
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition:
Edition: Summary: The successful Dead Or Alive fighting game franchise is known as much for the bouncing breasts of the female combatants as for its innovative and consistently fun three dimensional gameplay. Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball is a spinoff game that entirely drops the fighting game elements in favor of focusing on DoA's other claim to fame./ The game begins with you selecting one of the girls as your character. Each game is broken up into a two week vacation, and each day is divided into morning, daytime, and evening. You spend each segment of the day playing volleyball, gambling in the casino, shopping for swimsuits and accessories, lounging around the island, or trying to befriend the other girls on the island./ I'm not sure it's fair to classify DoA:XBV as a volleyball game. Sure, you'll spend a bit of time playing volleyball, but the gameplay is so basic that there are literally only two buttons: one to pass to your teammate and another to send the ball to the opposing side of the net. It's probably more accurate to label DoA:XBV as an unusual "relationship" game, with volleyball just one of several ways to earn money to spend on gifts for girls. Each girl has a set of items that they like; the actual object of the game is to figure out what those items are, where to buy them, and how to present them to each girl. Well-wooed girls will partner up with you for volleyball matches, or allow themselves to be convinced to try on slinkier and more exotic swimwear. For example: if you want Kasumi to try on the barely-there "Venus" swimsuit, you're going to have to shower her with gifts of strawberries, balloons, and origami./ What the game lacks in depth, volleyball gameplay, or features it makes up for in eye candy. The well-modeled, bouncy characters attract the most attention, but the island's beaches and jungles are also universally gorgeous--and most of the volleyball courts can be played at different times of the day. If nothing else, Xtreme Beach Volleyball is a great display of the raw graphical power of the Xbox./ When considering whether or not you should purchase Dead Or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball it's important to remember what it is and what it is not. It is not a volleyball game. It is an incredibly pretty collection of small but moderately amusing mini-games played by buxom cartoon babes. Fans of Lara Croft, rejoice: the next generation is here. --Jon "Safety Monkey" Grover/ Pros:/ • Fantastic graphics/ • Exotic tropical setting/ • If you ever wanted to see the girls of the Dead or Alive franchise run around in bikinis, here's your chance/ Cons:/ • Volleyball portion of game is simple, not a lot of fun/ • Only supports two players--only then in Exhibition mode and not on the same team/ • More a collection of cut scenes than a real game/ • May make you feel dirty/

Condition:
Edition: Summary: While investigating the kidnapping of a distinguished judge, Jack Slate uncovers a labyrinth of corruption and betrayal and reaffirms for himself that he can only trust his loyal dog, Shadow--the fiercest crime-fighting weapon known to man./ In Dead to Rights II, Grant City's finest returns with nastier disarms, spherical slow-motion dives, and some awesome graphics and programming features. You can now use the K-9 fighting companion to attack enemies in real-time while you take care of your other vital business. You control Shadow's attacks -- if his stamina bar is high enough, Slate's loyal companion will kill the enemy, and if the pooch is tired, he'll work to restrain any villain with vicious bites. And once he's finished his work, Shadow will return to Slate and await your command for the next mission. This dog will attack, restrain, and destroy enemies while you wax other scumbags. Speaking of moves, Dead to Rights II delivers 13 new brutal disarms to take down enemies in the heat of battle, bringing the total number to 25./ The spherical slow-motion dives mean Slate can shift in all directions, from one enemy target to the next, and take them all out in the dramatic fashion popularized by the Matrix movies. Namco delivers a lightning-fast fighting system that allows Slate to bash enemies with bats, pipes, meat cleavers, swords, and just about anything else he can wrap his fingers around./ In Dead to Rights II, Slate is armed with a massive arsenal that now includes heavy hitters like rocket launchers, grenades, and molotov cocktails. But even with all this weaponry, sometimes you still have to go fisticuffs on villains. A new, 360-degree fighting system enables Slate to battle enemies coming from all directions in brutal hand-to-hand combat. Brawling has never been better than with Slate's array of dynamic punches, kicks, melee disarms, unruly blocks, and desperation attacks./ /

Defender of the Crown

Platform: Nintendo NES
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Action
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: If you are looking for a classic game that combines action and strategy in a very balanced way, this is the definite game for you. Defender of the Crown is a classic Amiga video game developed by Cinemaware (all the old Amiga folks bought it and played it to exhaustion). Cinemaware is an traditional California video game developer that has recently come back to life. You should visit their website, (...), and check out the quality of the other products they developed in the past. James Cope describes well the dinamics of the game, but I don't know why he gave it a 4 stars only; this is definatively a five stars. And I don't agree that you get tired of playing; I have seldom seen such a playable game and because of the many different scenarios you never get tired of it (I still play it after 10 years).
Maybe the reason Kames Cope gave it a four stars is that he is expecting Cinemaware to deliver an ultimate five-star version of the game with Robin Hood: Defender of the Crown. In the Cinemaware website you can also download an Amiga version of the game, if you manage to download a freeware Amiga emulator you can get a good run on your desktop.
Now Robin Hood plays an interesting part in the game and it is part of its medieval environment. The graphics were the best of their time and I am sure that the "remake" will live up to Cinemaware's tradition of playability and great graphs. Buy it! Buy it! Buy it! And help me pester those Cinemaware folks to speed up the development of Robin Hood: Defender of the Crown! I can't wait any longer....(...)

Edition: Summary: The year is 2052 and the world is a dangerous and chaotic place. Terrorists operate openly, killing thousands, while drugs, disease, and pollution kill even more. The world's economics are close to collapse, and the gap between the insanely wealthy and the desperately poor has grown to the size of the Grand Canyon. Worst of all, believers of an age-old conspiracy bent on world domination has decided that the time is right to emerge from the shadows and take control. No one believes the conspiracy exists--no one but you. The adaptation of this role-playing adventure for the PlayStation2 retains all of the levels and missions of the PC original./ You are J.C. Denton, a powerful, nanotechnologically augmented antiterrorist agent. It's up to you to stop the conspirators from achieving their goals. But this world is full of lies and betrayal, a world where nothing is as it seems and entire nations can seemingly be turned against you at the push of a button. To succeed, you must travel the globe in a quest for knowledge, develop your character's nanotech augmentations and strengths as you see fit, build a network of allies to assist you, and determine when stealth and strategy are more important than action. And each time you think you've got the mystery solved and the game figured out, there's another, deeper mystery to unravel. You will never know whom to trust, who your friends are, who's in the conspiracy, and who's innocent. Maybe no one is./

Diablo

Platform: Playstation

Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: "Monty Haul.""Hack and Slash." If these names mean anything to you, you'll like Diablo. The story is simple and doesn't get in the way of the action: the demon Diablo has set up shop beneath the cathedral on the edge of town, and it's your job to destroy him./ Diablo was and is one of the great PC role-playing games, and this PlayStation port holds true to the original. You create your character--Warrior, Sorcerer, or Rogue--and take him or her up in experience levels as you hack your way down, level by level, to the bottom of the dungeon beneath the cathedral, where Diablo awaits. Along the way you gain a lot of cool magical artifacts, weapons, and equipment. These mystical tools define your character as much as or more than the obligatory character stats such as strength, dexterity, and stamina./ The game's only flaws are due to its translation to the PlayStation. The controls can be difficult, especially with ranged weapons, and the two-player mode throws both characters on the same screen, often making it problematic to negotiate the various rooms of any given level./ Complaints aside, Diablo is a solid hack and slash adventure game. You'd be either a fool or a coward to pass it up. --John Cocking/ Pros:/ • Great hack and slash action/ • Magical goodies galore/ • Classic dungeon crawl/ Cons:/ • Awkward controls/ • Frustrating 2-player mode/

Double Dribble

Platform: Nintendo NES
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Sports
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: If you and your friends are having an argument over who is the best sports gamer, then look no further than any old NES Konami game. Konami was one of the best producers of sports games back in the late 80's early 90's before EA Sports, Sega Sports, and 989 Sports. With those new companies, you can get all the cheats for the games and supe up your teams to be unbeatable. That's not the case with old Konami games.
Take Double Dribble for example. It is in my opinion the best Basketball video game of all time. Sure there are only 4 teams, but they are all equal in stature and prominence. Choose from the Frogs, Falcons, Wave, or Bulls, and it won't matter who you play against because there are no '96 Bulls vs. '01 Bulls that create a complete mismatch. The game play is very responsive, and it's easy to get the hang of it. I love how realistic this game is because your players DO NOT make every single shot like it's NBA Jam or anything. You have to work to get open and shoot intelligent shots (No behind the back 3-pointers).
Now some people may not like the graphics just because it's old, but who cares about graphics when you're playing a fun game. There's not much to a basketball video game than a court, 2 baskets, 10 players, and a ball. You don't need rendered facial expressions or a realistic crowd and arena. All you need is an old NES, two controllers with two buttons, a trash-talking friend, and a copy of Double Dribble. After stripping away all of today's video game bells and whistles, you can finally play at the exact same level, and only then will you and your friend know who is the better sports gamer.
...The old slam dunk video sequences are awesome to watch.

Dr. Mario

Platform: Nintendo NES
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Action
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: This is an excellent game and if you were looking for a version of Tetris that was more challenging, than DR MARIO was for you. This game is sometimes very tricky, but it's very fun as well.
The object of the game is to match the colors of the pills that are being dropped onto the viruses below and by doing this killing them off, one by one. I really don't carw what anyone says but this game rocked. In Tetris, the challenge was to clear lines that are at the bottom and they build up. In DR MARIO you had to play the boards as they were giben and in most cases, the viruses were all over the place so placing some of the pills in the wrong place could come back to haunt you.
Like I said, the challenge to this game is great and it never got tired. Really check out DR MARIO it's worth it!

Dragon Warrior

Platform: Nintendo NES

Edition: Summary: Dragon Warrior is a game of complete skill and strategy because the player has to figure out how to get to a town without dying and gaining experience at the same time. The object of the game is to defeat the dragonlord, no more to be said except that it is hard to get a high enough level to beat any minion of the dragonlord and himself.

The controls are the easiest to tell and learn, the controls are the following:
A button is the basic action it does everything, the player press A to bring up a menu of commands. In a fight it comes up automaticly.
B button cancels a command.
Start pauses the game.
Use the control pad to move the character.
Select does nothing.

This is a really fun game and I would recommend this game to people who still have a NES(Nintendo Entertianment System).

Dragon Warrior IV

Platform: Nintendo NES
Publisher: Enix America Corp.
Genre: Kids & Family
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: I was a fan of the DW series since number 1. The only one that might surpass this one might be DQ8 (which I am currently playing, at the time of writing this). This game is huge. You get 8+ members to your party, and a great story. The character development is surprisingly in depth for a NES game. Though it's only 8 bit, I think the designers did a great job with what technology they had. The graphics were simple, but very well done, and the music was great. I still find some of it to be moving to this day.

Dragon Warrior VII

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: Enix
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: The top-selling PlayStation game in Japanese history makes its way to the U.S. in Dragon Warrior VII. Its creators include a trio of Japanese role-playing-game legends--game designer Yuji Horii, music composer Koichi Sugiyama, and character designer Akira Toriyama (who also created the popular Dragonball and Dragonball Z cartoons and comics). At its heart, Dragon Warrior VII is an old-school RPG that eschews flashy graphics and sound effects in favor of a good story and dozens of gameplay hours. In some cases it succeeds in capturing the nostalgia of old NES and SNES RPGs, but in others it hangs on too dearly to obsolete conventions. Still, this is one of the most value-packed games on the market, as it easily offers more than 100 hours of gameplay./ Graphically, Dragon Warrior VII will not impress anyone. Even compared to first-generation PlayStation games this one comes off as ugly. The sound is a mix of nostalgic MIDI bits from previous Dragon Warrior games and beautiful new compositions by Sugiyama. The story progresses in a linear fashion, as the main character discovers new lands, each with its own mysteries, characters, and adventures. The job system adds immense depth to character progression, as players can learn skills from more than 50 classes, including warriors, clerics, jesters, rangers, dragoons, teen idols, and more./ As deep as the job system is, progress is hindered by laborious combat and inventory-management systems. It would have been nice if the development team tried to implement modern gameplay mechanics with the rich Dragon Warrior universe. Because of its archaic aspects, the game will scare off those that aren't familiar with older RPGs. However, persevering gamers and longtime fans will enjoy one of the deepest adventures on the market. --Raymond M. Padilla/ Pros:/ • More than 100 hours of gameplay/ • Extremely deep job system/ • Memorable characters/ Cons:/ • Horrible graphics/ • Poor interface/ • Dull combat/

Dragon's Lair 3D: Return To The Lair

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: UBI Soft
Genre: Third-Person Action
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition:
Edition: Summary: If you've been around long enough to remember Don Bluth's 1983 arcade version of Dragon's Lair, then you'll discover much to enjoy in Dragon's Lair 3-D. You'll still find all of the elements of the arcade game that encouraged eager teens to part with a whopping fifty cents for what might very well have been little more than two minutes of gameplay. There's our goofy, bumbling knight, Dirk the Daring; the object of his affection, Daphne, who's been kidnapped by the evil wizard, Mordroc; and of course Singe, the resident dragon./ Whether or not you played the original, you'll still enjoy the unique graphics of Dragon's Lair 3-D. Playing the game, which appears to have been hand drawn in many places, is akin to controlling a cartoon. The bright primary colors and detailed 3-D backgrounds combine to make Dirk's adventures particularly engaging. Throughout Mordroc's castle you'll encounter everything from a miniature solar system floating near the ceiling of one room, to castle walls that slide, shift, and bounce; furniture and books that attack you; stairwells that disappear under your feet; and a deadly green gas that seeps into rooms whose exits suddenly disappear behind bricks that stack up right before your eyes. Beating these foes and traps can be immensely satisfying, especially in a world that looks this good./ Fortunately Dragon's Lair 3-D parts company with the arcade version in significant ways. The arcade version was one of the most ruthlessly choreographed games ever: you didn't play it so much as move the joystick and then watch the screen. Not so with Dragon's Lair 3-D, where even after defeating a foe or disabling a trap there is a chance to discover a hidden treasure or magic potion somewhere in the room. What's more, while Dirk's primary weapon is still his sword, he can do a few more things with it in Dragon's Lair 3-D, and later levels let him use a crossbow that's good for both long range attacks and gaining access to various castle locations./ But as with the original, there is little to no replay value with Dragon's Lair 3-D. Once you've jumped and fought your way through Mordroc's library, there isn't much to enjoy in doing it again. That said, doing it once is more than worthwhile. --Bill Hummel/ Pros:/ • Captures the classic fun of the original arcade game/ • Beautiful colors and animations accentuate Dirk's adventures/ • Challenging and rewarding gameplay/ Con:/ • Little replay value/

Dynamite Headdy

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: 2D Platformer
My Rating:   Rated: General Audience
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: After almost 20 years playing every type of game on so many different systems, Dynamite Headdy remains one of my fondest memories and even now, 10 years on, I would still pop the cartridge into my Genesis / Megadrive for an enjoyable trip down memory lane.

The graphics are absolutely top-notch - some of the best seen on the system, while the music is excellent. There's more than a few catchy tunes on there and the soundtrack just suits the zany nature of the game perfectly.

The levels are varied and packed with special effects and humour - there's even a shoot-em-up style level in there! Backgrounds and enemies are constantly wonderful and imaginative, as are the spectacular bosses you will encounter along the way!

Gameplay is great - it gets pretty tricky later on, but perseverance guarantees progress and rarely does the action become tedious, fiddly or overly frustrating, as tends to be the case with a lot of platformers.

In terms of lastability, the game will take some time to complete given the difficulty of the later stages. But even after completing it, it is always enjoyable to come back to and, of course, there is always the challenge of finding those elusive Secret Bonus Points scattered througout each level.

To conclude, a magnificent game from Treasure that thoroughly merits a place in the collection of any Platform fan!
