Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: Capcom
Genre: 2D Fighting
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: For much of the 90's the 2-D realm consisted of a battle between Capcom's stars and the 2-D fighters from rival SNK. Fans mourned when SNK went out of business a couple years ago, but Capcom has resurrected its enemies for yet another battle in Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO./ The game offers a remarkable assortment of fighters, fighting styles, and variety of play. Forty characters--each with their own special powers, attacks, timing issues, personalities, and sound bites--get magnified three-fold by three separate "-isms" which alter their powers, and three "grooves," which mix them up yet again. There's a lot to learn and it ensures that playing a foe of equal skill is never dull because you can never be sure what character he's going to pick and how that character will fight./ The graphics are generally decent, though some of these fighters look like they haven't been spiffed up for today's console systems. The older Street Fighter guys look just plain bad next to newly added characters from the SNK stable. But the animation is smooth, the backgrounds have been significantly redone and feature new, often startling animations, and the special effects are just plain awesome. The audio is pretty much the same old themes that Capcom has been using for the better part of a decade now./ All told there's very little reason for PS2 or GameCube gamers to own this game, other than the SNK characters. The Xbox version is playable over Xbox Live (sold separately), which is a big advantage--everyone knows that these games, born of arcade coin-ops, are meant to be played competitively. The service does nothing to match players of equal skill, but that's pretty similar to the experience in an arcade. The ability to start up a relatively lag free game at a moment's notice and trade trash talk with another gamer from around the world is just priceless, and a welcome addition to the series. --Andrew S. Bub/ Pros:/ • Forty fighters from two video game stables/ • Xbox Live play is smooth and mostly lag free/ Cons:/ • Dated graphics/ • Inadequate manual/

Car Battler Joe

Platform: Game Boy Advance
Publisher: Natsume
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Cart Only
Edition: Summary: Car Battler Joe - a game that shows us that you CAN mix vehicle-fighting with RPG gameplay!

This game also reminds me a lot of the old Dreamcast title, E.G.G. Both games share much of the same qualities, such as the solid gameplay, colorful graphics, combination of both a 2D and 3D engine into the game, and the high design value of the game overall. Car Battler Joe has bits of just about every other game, and it mixes them together really well.

The first thing that'll strike you when you boot the game is the size and detail of the graphics. When people talk, you see an animation of their face in respect in the situation (the local employment office manager will change facial expression depending on what they're talking about). When you move around, there's lots to explore and hidden items can be found. The designers of this game definitely had visibility in mind when they created this game, and it really shows as you progress throughout the game.

When traveling between towns or going into car battles, the game switches to a 3D engine where the player must fight opponents to win items and reach their goal or destination. You can gain pieces of junk for investigation later on (they may turn out to be car parts or such), you can also obtain money or other items from destroyed enemies. And the speed? The 3D engine never slows down as you ricochet through the driving course trying to survive to the end of the level.

The great thing about this game is the seamlessness between the 3D and 2D engines, and on top of that you can upgrade or modify your car as much as you have cash on hand.

So if you like RPG's mixed with action, I would recommend taking a look at this title. Its hard to find, but well-worth having in any GBA or GBA SP collection.

Carrier

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Jaleco
Genre: Horror
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Carrier is a pretty good Resident Evil clone for the Dreamcast. It takes place on a giant ship where humans are turning into hideous mutants - now thats original! But actually, it has a couple of neat innovations of its own such as the scope that lets you see who is infected, and the opportunity to replay the game as a second character. Its also quite tough to finish, but worth the effort. Mind you, the climax is such a rip off of the tyrant battle from RE1 that I'm surprised a lawsuit didn't follow! Should be going fairly cheap now, so pick one up.

Castle Shikigami 2

Platform: Playstation 2

Genre: Shooter
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: INFORMATION AND SCREEN SHOTS FROM IGN...
The sequel to Alfa System's vertical shooter for the G-Net arcade system, Castle Shikigami 2 was originally developed for the more powerful NAOMI arcade hardware and introduces two new characters to the series' curious modern-fantasy setting. The game, which plays like a traditional shooter in the style of Ikaruga, enables gamers to control flying humans instead of ships. Featuring advanced particle systems, large-scale bosses, and tons of action on screen, the game marries the traditional 2D gameplay of classic shooters like R-Type with turning and twisting 3D polygonal backgrounds found in more modern shooter offerings. Part one was released in the west under the title Mobile Light Force 2.

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse

Platform: Nintendo NES
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Action
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Over the years, Konami has become one of the best-known video gaming third party corporations out there - for a number of reasons. But, their most popular series of all would have to be the vampire-killing franchise, Castlevania. Konami released the first installment of the series on American consoles in 1987, and a sequel (which was radically different from the first game) just one year later. The next year thereafter, they released the first Game Boy installment, The Castlevania Adventure, but it ended up being the worst installment in the entire series! But, one year later, another new Castlevania came on the scene - which would be the final one released for the NES. Read on for my review of Castlevania III - Dracula's Curse.
PROS:
-IT'S THE ALL-IMPORTANT RETURN TO NORMALCY GAME. The radical shift of gaming styles featured in Castlevania II - Simon's Quest turned off a ton of fans of the series. Fortunately, this game will win those folks back instantly.
-FOR ITS DAY AND AGE, THESE WERE SOME OF THE BEST VIDEO GAME GRAPHICS OUT THERE. The on-screen graphics move along at a pretty decent pace, and slow-down is very minimal. As far as the NES in the eighties goes, the graphics didn't get a whole lot better than this.
-THE MUSIC IS GREAT FOR THIS KIND OF GAME. I've played a number of NES games with great music in them, but this title features some of the best. The music always suits the eerie atmosphere perfectly.
-PLAY CONTROL IS SIMPLE AND TO THE POINT. Basically you move, crouch, jump, attack, and attack with a secondary weapon. This series was one of the first to feature a secondary weapon - a video gaming feature which has since been copied countless times.
-YOU CHOOSE WHO YOU ARE AND WHERE YOU GO (TO A POINT.) Through the course of the game, you'll encounter a number of "forks in the road", and you get to choose which route you wish to take. You'll even come across spiritual helpers, who are characters you can play as in addition to your main character, Trevor Belmont. You can get Sypha, the wizard, Grant, the pirate, or Alucard, the son of Dracula. Each one has his or her own strengths and weakenesses.
-YOU CAN SAVE YOUR PROGRESS WITH PASSWORDS. You've gotta love passwords - a lack of them is what ultimately destroyed the first installment in the series.
CONS:
-THE GAME IS DIFFICULT. Not as difficult as the first game, but difficult nonetheless. You'll come across a series of challenges in the game, and checkpoints are few and far between.
-PLAY CONTROL CAN SEEM VERY STIFF AT TIMES. Most characters have no midair jump control whatsoever, which can make life a living hell. Controlling the secondary characters can be challenging at first - Alucard is about as agile as a two-by-four with legs.
OVERALL:
Overall this is a very good game, and it stands the test of time as one of the finest entries in the series. If you have an eight-bit Nintendo Entertainment System, this game is a must purchase.

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon

Platform: Game Boy Advance
Publisher: Konami
Genre:
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Cart Only
Edition: Summary: One of the best side-scrolling game franchises makes a successful debut on the Game Boy Advance in Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. This time around you follow the adventures of Nathan Graves as he attempts to stop the recently resurrected Dracula. In the fine tradition of Castlevania vampire hunters, Graves carries a whip as his primary weapon, and will soon discover the traditional secondary weapons of holy water, dagger, boomerang, time freeze, and more. New to the series is the dual set-up system (DSS), which allows you to use 20 cards (randomly found) for up to 80 power-ups./ The game plays like a side-scrolling classic without seeming too dated. Players traipse around a nonlinear dungeon, defeat monsters, and unlock new parts of the dungeon, often through the use of new abilities. It's similar to the excellent Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for the PlayStation, with the obvious aural limitations of a cartridge-based handheld system./ Unfortunately, the game's dark graphics are difficult to see on the Game Boy Advance's fickle screen. Long sessions require consistent overhead lighting, so this isn't the ideal game for travel. The animations are also lacking, making character movement appear jerky. Despite these graphics shortcomings, this side-scrolling wonder makes a fine addition to your GBA library. --Raymond M. Padilla/ Pros:/ • Classic gameplay/ • High replay value/ • Great sound for a handheld game/ Cons:/ • Dark graphics are butchered by the GBA screen/ • Mediocre animation/

My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Chocobo, that cute birdlike creature of Final Fantasy fame, returns in its very own role-playing adventure. The cutesy appeal of Chocobo's Dungeon 2 may look as if it is aimed at younger players, but there is enough depth here to satisfy older gamers./ For starters, Chocobo's Dungeon 2 lets two players partner in gameplay as they search several randomly generated dungeons that are full of traps, strange devices, and monsters, making the difficulty increase as the game progresses./ Players can combine armor or weapons to form stronger resources in their quest. There are also magic feathers that can aid in your efforts, since they allow gamers to perform magic spells that have an impact on combat. Between your dungeon travels, players are able to explore villages to obtain valuable clues for the journey. In addition, players can use this time to update Chocobo's inventory./ Overall, Chocobo's Dungeon 2 is a great game for players looking to get a start in role-playing games. This title is a safe entry point to this often-complex game genre. --Robb Guido/ Pros:/ • Randomly generated dungeons provide variety/ • Armor and weapons can be combined to form stronger armor and weapons/ Cons:/ • The story is not as engaging as those of other Squaresoft games/

Chrono Cross

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: SquareSoft
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Chrono Cross, the sequel to the Super Nintendo classic Chrono Trigger, turns out to be well worth the wait. Taking off 20 years after the first game, Chrono Cross follows a boy named Serge across parallel worlds--both the world in which he lives and one in which he drowned 10 years earlier./ Chrono Cross will wow players with beautiful prerendered graphics and a unique battle system. Elements replace magic and items in battle, and using the same element three times in a row will ultimately increase your power. In addition to using elements, the accuracy of physical attacks is determined by probability, with easier-to-land weak attacks setting up fierce blows./ The plot, while a bit slow to develop, is full of interesting characters. Players will need to travel between the two worlds to advance the plot. While many of these areas will initially appear to look similar, you'll find them to be quite different upon closer examination of the details. For instance, a plant that is extinct in one world thrives in the other./ My only qualm with Chrono Cross is that, despite the complexities of the battle system, veterans will have an easy time with early battles. Still, there's much to like about this SquareSoft epic. --Robb Guido/ Pros:/ • Lavish, vibrantly colored graphics/ • Unique battle system involving elements and casting away role-playing clichés like experience and magic points/ Cons:/ • Easy battles due to powerful offensive and cure elements/ • For hours, players will be saying, "Get to the time travel stuff"/

College Slam

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: Acclaim
Genre: Sports
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: "College Slam" can pretty much be considered an NBA Jam clone. The only difference is that this game features college teams instead of NBA teams, and that some of the powerups you can get are different. Like NBA Jam, it's 2-on-2 basketball with high flying dunks and you can get on fire for scoring 3 baskets in a row against your opponent. You can play a game where items will appear on the floor and you can get them to gain a powerup. They range from lightning attacks that will blast your opponents' rim off so they won't have one to shoot at to one where you turn into a tornado that will knock down your opponents.
"College Slam" is a good game and it's a lot of fun, but they forgot to do something in the game. None of the players have names so you'll know who your players really are. It just has one center, two forwards, and two guards that you can choose from for each team and it tells you their statistics. All in all if you like fun basketball games, I recommend playing "College Slam."

Contra: Shattered Soldier

Platform: PlayStation 2
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Shooter
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition:
Edition: Summary: Contra Shattered Soldier. One of the hardest games to ever come out on the PS2 besides exclusive japanese titles (Ibara, Shooting Love Trizeal, Mushihime-Sama,Imperishable Night, etc) The best thing about Contra Shattered Soldier is that it makes some minor changes to the original gameplay, but it still keeps the core elements of the Contra series which is great.

At first I would like to start out with the gameplay. Though most of the gameplay is the same as the original Contra, the one main difference that you will notice is that now you start of with 3 weapons instead of obtaining them, and the fact that the weapons can be charged up. I personally liked this because it adds more strategy to the gameplay and it is better than picking up individual weapons for different situations. You got everything you need all in one gun and a button push away. The other main difference is that they added a level completion percentage that raises everytime you kill a certain badguy or object.

Now it is time for the difficutly. Contra Shattered Soldier is a pretty challenging game (Not something that everybody claims to be challenging like Devil May Cry 3). The first time I played it I couldn't even get past the 1st level in a matter of tries, and even when I did pass the first level, I did not get 100% completion on it, because of the specific things you need to find and look for in the levels, and in the 2nd level I actually died a little bit over 30 times the first time I tried it, and I only kept on dying more and more as the levels went on. This game might be tough, but that's what makes it fun, i've never played any other game that has you fighting 7 bosses a level. The game itself takes only 30 minutes to beat if you are good at speed runs but you will be playing it for months untill then.

Now onto the level design. Contra Shattered Soldier has a pretty good level layout, there are many badguys and the nice 2D to 2.5D is pretty nice, it still keeps the Contra feelings.

Music. Contra Shattered Soldier has a good musical score in my opinion, even though it only has metal and trance songs, the music fits the levels and helps get that adrenaline pumping during battle. Actually out of all the hundreds of games that I have played in my whole life Contra SS has been the only game to make my heart pace.

Now the story. I think this is also one of the better things of Contra Shattered Soldier. The game doesn't really have a story, it's not that I don't enjoy a game with a good story, it's just that Contra has never been about that, so i'm glad they stuck nothing but gameplay. There are no stupid interrupt scenes like in Anubis. Zone of the Enders that cut away from the fun and destruction, as soon as the onslaught starts in Contra Shattered Soldier, it practically keeps on going on for the next 30 to 50 minutes.

All in all Contra Shattered Soldier is another great game to add to your PS2 collection that seperates the men from the boys, or if you are female the woman from the girls.

Contra: The Alien Wars

Platform: Game Boy
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Shooter
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: Another game in the popular Contra series, this one goesto show why the series in so popular. It managed to capture the market because of it's simplicity in it's jump and shoot gameplay and the intuitive game bosses. The Alien wars continues in the tradition with simple gameplay and a lot of baddies hogging the screen. The sounds are good and the gameplay is easy at first and gets progressively harder every stage. This is a good game for all the action freaks and will certainly fulfill your action quotient for a few hours at least. There are about 6 levels and the bosses go in the typical contra style with huge obnoxious heads and potruding multiple limbs. The storyline is not that great and seems to be just an afterthought to the action. Buy this one and you will not be disappointed.

Crash Bandicoot Wrath of Cortex

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: Universal Interactive Studios
Genre: 3D Platformer
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition:
Edition: Platinum Hits Summary: Crash Bandicoot, the famous marsupial video-game icon, comes spinning into yet another solid action platform game in Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex. This is the first true platform game for the Xbox, and is suitable for cartoon-action lovin' fans of all ages./ Evil is at an all-time decline, so Crash's arch-nemesis Dr. Neo Cortex is designing the ultimate weapon: Crunch, the extra-evil-bio-engineered-super-bandicoot! In order to complete Crunch, the good doctor needs more power--the kind of power that only evil, renegade voodoo masks can provide. Enter the Elementals./ Set free by the evil voodoo mask Uka Uka, the Elementals control various aspects of the environment. They are so powerful, and so dangerous, that they almost destroyed the Earth once, and were sealed in special crystals to protect the Earth from certain doom. Uka Uka believes that by harnessing the power of these evil masks, Dr. Cortex will have all the power he needs to complete Crunch, and finally finish off Crash./ So once again Crash returns to his crystal-collecting, box-bashing, bad guy-spinning ways. Can he stop the masks? Will he defeat Crunch? Only time, and your weary game-playing hands, will tell./ The Wrath of Cortex is the hardest game in the series' history. There are 30 levels, seven different vehicles, bonus levels, and a time-trial mode. As you progress through the game, you fight five bosses. Each time you defeat a boss, you unlock a new move (double jump, bazooka, tiptoe, Crash dash, and death tornado). Although the coolest feature is that you get to play as Crash's sister Coco on some levels./ The game is good, but is it perfect? The graphics are solid, but not much of an improvement over the PlayStation2 version--the game definitely doesn't take full advantage of the Xbox's hardware. Also, the long load times for levels can be annoying. Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex was not developed by Naughty Dog, the company that started the series. The game, while faithfully following the traditional feel of the series, misses some of the polished quirkiness that Naughty Dog is known for./ Bottom line: The Wrath of Cortex is a great game for all ages, and will give you 40 or more hours of solid gameplay. --Bryan Karsh/ Pros:/ • Play as Coco/ • Seven vehicles/ • Fun new moves/ Cons:/ • New developer, new feel--it needs a little getting used to/ • Long load times/ • Good, but not great graphics--doesn't really look like an Xbox game/

Crazy Taxi

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Racing
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: If you think it's hard to flag down a cab in a big city, try driving one in Sega's zany straight-from-the-arcade port of "Crazy Taxi". If you're one of the teeming fans who eagerly played "Crazy Taxi" in the arcade at a buck a pop, then this game is a must-buy, if only from a purely economic standpoint. Even those who don't know the difference between "Crazy Taxi" and the long-running TV series "Taxi" will immediately recognize the appeal of this game. In fact, this game is so impressive and addictive that it should easily convince a whole new wave of buyers to purchase a Sega Dreamcast.
What's so hot about "Crazy Taxi"? For starters, the graphics sport the most impressive re-creation of a living city ever seen in a video game. The level of detail is astounding and never ceases to surprise the player as block after unique block speeds by. The city is a distilled version of San Francisco with some landmarks and neighborhoods left intact. Making it seem all the more real are apparent product placements of real-world retail locations such as KFC, Tower Records, and Pizza Hut. And just about everything you see on the screen is interactive: boxes, phone booths, and mailboxes topple when bumped or smashed, pedestrians leap and tumble out of your path, and the myriad of traffic attempts to avoid your erratic high-speed antics. While some driving games brag about a lack of boundaries, this one delivers--players drive on the ocean floor, off the second floor of a parking garage, through parks, and down stairs. A helpful hovering arrow points drivers in the correct direction, but you can truly drive wherever you want at any time, making for tons of replay value.
While the game is a direct port from the arcade game of the same name, there's plenty more depth in the home version. In addition to the city that appears in the coin-op version, the Dreamcast version also includes an entirely new city. "Crazy Taxi" includes a trunk-load of mini-games that help to teach drivers how to perform the special speed boosts and maneuvers in the game.
Though this game would be plenty exciting without any sounds at all, it has an adrenaline-pumping soundtrack supplied by punk crossover bands the Offspring and Bad Religion, as well as some good, if sometimes monotonous, dialogue between the driver and the passengers. "--Jeff Young"
Pros: Wonderful, realistic graphics Easy to get into, and full of many long hours of addictive play Even more to offer than the fantastic arcade game upon which this is based Cons: On very few occasions players will encounter some graphic slowdown

Crazy Taxi 2

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Racing
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: "Crazy Taxi" was an arcade game turned Dreamcast showcase that really helped sell the system. Now that the Dreamcast is on its last legs, Sega throws crazed drivers everywhere a bone by moving the sequel to the system. "Crazy Taxi 2" is the same as "Crazy Taxi", only crazier!
First off, Sega moved the scenery from hilly San Francisco to the narrow urban canyons of New York City--which is a bad thing if the hills in the first game were an attraction. But this one has Central Park, and that's a thrill unto itself. Also, "Crazy Taxi 2" lets you pick up multiple passengers (on occasion), which is the best way to keep that timer up and score bigger points.
Once again you've got aggravating and conspicuous advertising in the game--from Burger King and KFC to clothing stores and other real-world destinations. Masters of Mayhem and Offspring supply the music. The Offspring song is a new one--at least we're pretty sure it is--but like all Offspring songs it sounds like the one from the last game.
Additionally, there are new Crazy Stunts you can perform. Crazy Golf entails a run at a massive ball, with a goal of smacking it a good 100 yards. Crazy Balloon 2 challenges you to pop all the balloons in a short span of time. Plus there are three more minigames you can play. You can play arcade style with a set time limit, or on a big or small NYC map.
The controls are tight and easily as good as last time, but some players may still have trouble performing some of the more difficult tricks. Also, this game is extremely similar to the first one. Anyone bored with "Crazy Taxi" isn't going to find "Crazy Taxi 2" a breath of fresh air. But the game is still really fun for players of all ages. It's crazy, wild, and a completely realistic simulation of a real NYC cab ride. "--Andrew S. Bub"
Pros: NY, NY is a heck of town Same tried-and-true gameplay as the original Lots of new minigames, drivers, and maps Cons: No hills Same tried-and-true gameplay as the original

Cruis'n Exotica

My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: This is the third time that Midway has ported a Cruis'n coin-op title to the Nintendo 64, and in three years. While the series has been a commercial success (nearly two million units sold), there's still nothing new to be found. This is a shame--this is one series that could have benefited tremendously from an overhaul (no pun intended)./ Cruis'n Exotica is an arcade racing game in which players choose a vehicle (be it a car, truck, or "other") and compete against various opponents in a no-holds-barred trek across many varied tracks. If this doesn't sound terribly original, you're starting to get the picture: it's not./ Midway's Cruis'n Exotica features courses from across America, not to mention previous titles in the series (Cruis'n USA and Cruis'n World). Thankfully, Midway went the extra step and crafted levels that literally go beyond the familiar landscape, and genuinely qualify as exotic. Planet Mars, anyone?/ Gamers have 30 different vehicles from which to choose (12 default, 18 to unlock by winning races), and include a police car, a 4 x 4, and a hippie van, to name but a few. There's also a selection of drivers from which to choose (a baby, clown, alien, etc.)./ With substandard graphics that seem to ignore the achievements that developers have squeezed out of the Nintendo 64 hardware over the past few years, this game delivers only mediocre gameplay and uninspired play mechanics. The N64 is no stranger to great racing games--the amazing Ridge Racer 64 and Beetle Adventure Racing! have shown that the console is quite capable of delivering a good time behind the wheel. While it's not a terrible game, by any means, Cruis'n Exotica simply is superfluous. --Todd Mowatt/ Pros:/ • Plenty of new courses/ Cons:/ • Mediocre gameplay and control/ • Very little that's new, to distinguish it from other Cruis'n titles/
