The X-Files

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: Fox Interactive
Genre: Adventure
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: The truth is out there. And this game, based on one of the best sci-fi TV series in history, is way, way "out there." Despite performances by original cast members David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Mitch Pileggi, and a few other favorites, The X-Files puts the "normal" back into paranormal./ Collaboration with the TV show's creator, Chris Carter, ensures that the game attains the eerie visual quality of the show, but the lack of any tension or pacing makes one wonder why the game is spread across an unusually voluminous four PlayStation discs./ Mulder and Scully have gone missing, and as the poorly acted Craig Willmore, a local FBI agent, you must find the clues that lead to their whereabouts. Most of the game is spent aimlessly wandering from location to location, hoping to find screen hotspots that may possibly give players a clue as to what they are supposed to do next./ Conversations with others seem strangely stilted, and often the script offers up red herrings that will frustrate players who try to play the game as if it were logically designed. In a number of instances, even though you know what course of action you should take, you're forced to wait for the game to catch up with you before taking it. Unless you are a die-hard X-Files collector, there is little reason to own this game. --Jeff Young/ Pros:/ • Lots of well-produced video/ Cons:/ • No sense of pacing/ • Limited interaction/ • Poor documentation/ • Illogical design/ • Scully and Mulder's appearances no more than cameos/

X-Men

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Fantasy
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: I got X-Men eleven or twelve years ago when my parents got me a Sega Genesis. It was my first video game and to this day it is still one of my favorite games. And even now in the days of the PS2 and Xbox, I'll still frequently pop this game into my Genesis and play. It's simple, fun and familiar.

The game lets you play as four X-Men (Gambit, Nightcrawler, Wolverine and Cyclops) and has five backup characters (Archangel, Storm, Rouge, Iceman and Jean Grey) that you can't play as, but you can call upon if you need help. The game brilliantly features the X-Men's different powers.

Each of the six levels are recognizable to people who are into X-Men...the Savage Land, the Shi'ar Empire, Excalibur's Lighthouse and Asteroid M to name most of them. The levels are interesting and well-detailed for a 16-bit game. They're also relatively big.

The boss fights are really great, too. Characters like Juggernaut, Sabertooth, Apocalypse, Mojo and obvously Magneto show up. Unfourtunately, a lot of them are really difficult to beat (not impossible) without backup characters, which is the only real problem with this game.

If you still own a working Genesis and don't have this game or haven't played this game before, I recommend looking for it.

X-Men 2 Clone Wars

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher:
Genre: Action
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: When one looks through the history of 16-bit video games, they will notice the unbelieveable number of comic-licensed side scrolling beat 'em ups (Spider-Man, Batman, Spawn, and the X-Men among others; funny because most of them were from Acclaim), most of which all played the same and really didn't offer much in the terms of fun and replayability. Sega's original X-Men game was an exception that captured some of the intensity of the comic and Fox cartoon, and its' sequel X-Men 2: The Clone Wars also excells above most of the other comic licensed games. You can choose to play as Beast, Cyclops, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Psylocke, and Wolverine, and after defeating Magneto on Asteroid M you get to play as him as well (and he is the best character in the game). The levels are huge and expansive and include Siberia, Asteroid M, the Amazon jungle, and the Phalanx clone laboritories. The bosses are tough and range from Apocalypse, Brainchild, Tusk, a Sentinel brain, clones of the X-Men, and the huge rampaging Brood beast that chases after you in the final level. The characters are nicely animated and are large, pixelated, and colorful and resemble they're comic counterparts. The control scheme is simple, and the background music is actually great (and that is saying something considering the Genesis didn't have the best sound chip in the world) and the difficulty will make you come back and play it again and again. All in all, if you still have your Genesis and are an X-Men fan then find this game quick, or if you still have this hold on to it.

Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: Namco
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: The ambitiously named Xenosaga: Episode 1--Der Wille zer Macht is an epic-sized space opera that opens in the outer reaches of the galaxy. The story follows several space-dwelling citizens as they aim to unlock the secrets of the universe. The specifics of those secrets presumably will be revealed over subsequent editions of the Xenosaga series (after all, this is only Episode 1)--but a vital clue is held in the elusive Zohar, a mysterious artifact that is aggressively sought by evil aliens. Without spoiling the plot's surprising twists, let's just say the game's German subtitle "Der Wille zur Macht" (translated as "The Will to Power") is a less-than-subtle ode to German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who is considered as one of the precursors of existentialism./ Like many conventional RPG titles, Xenosaga's gameplay balances between exploration and battle modes. The game designers have thankfully spared players from any ill-conceived random battle sequences. Instead, you can concentrate directly on your quest without the repetitious enemy battles./ The designers also did a good job balancing a traditional RPG structure with complex themes. However, the game seems to go out of its way to casually integrate controversial (and frankly creepy) religious imagery into the context of the game. Some may find the game offensive and disturbing; others will likely find it intellectually stimulating./ Namco promises about 80 hours of gaming--but a good portion of that is non-interactive full-motion video. While the stretched-out cutscenes do add considerable depth to the characters, they're often poorly paced and too long--one takes an alarming 30 minutes to unfold! The addition of more background music might have helped to pick up the pacing, since the obligatory soundtrack is strangely absent at some critical plot points./ With impressive animation and unexpected plot points, Xenosaga: Episode 1--Der Wille zer Macht is easily one of the more enjoyable RPG titles to hit the PS2. While this isn't for the happy-go-lucky gaming crowd (see Kingdom Hearts), adult-minded gamers will likely be consumed by the darkness and devious delights offered within this twisted title. --Brett Atwood/ Pros:/ • Complex characters and story themes/ • No random battle sequences/ • Impressive 3-D animation/ Cons:/ • Long, long, looooooooong cut scenes/
