Saga Frontier 2

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: SquareSoft
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: A beautifully illustrated fantasy role-playing game, SaGa Frontier 2 features lush, hand-painted watercolor backgrounds that give this animated title a rich, storybook look. Two-dimensional graphics have rarely looked this good in an adventure game./ Pretty pictures aside, the battle system in SaGa Frontier 2 is outstanding, allowing for combat to be as micromanaged or as mindless as players see fit. In addition to assigning in-battle character roles (such as support, intimidation, and so on), players can choose between multiple battle modes and execute elaborate attack combos (similar to that of fighting games)./ Like its predecessor, SaGa Frontier 2 puts a spin on the genre by featuring multiple storylines that converge at various points in the game. Events in the game are encapsulated into (mostly) playable scenarios, with new playable scenarios opening up as the existing ones are completed. While this feature enables gamers to experience nonlinear gameplay from different perspectives, it ultimately muddles rather than enhances the game's overall narrative. --Joe Hon/ Pros:/ • Beautiful storybook look/ • Outstanding battle system/ • Multi-scenario feature allows for nonlinear gameplay/ Cons:/ • Repetitive random battles/ • Limited appeal outside of fans of the genre/

Saiyuki: Journey West

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: KOEI
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Saiyuki was what I'd expected it to be: it was good, but not great. Saiyuki is a tactical turn-based RPG, basically a dumbed down version of Final Fantasy Tactics. I bought it based on that, as well as some decent reviews.
The combat is fun, which is good, because tactical RPG's are all about the combat. It is also a little innovative, mainly in the fact that members of your party can transform into Weres, giant monsters with more hit points and a variety of special attacks. They turned out to be less useful and important than I'd imagined, because only one person at a time can be one, and you have a very restrictive number of Were points to work with, especially early on.
The battles are also smaller than is most preferable. The maps aren't very big, first of all, and you can only control 6 people at a time (most things don't match Shining Force's 12 people). One annoying combat point is that Saiyuki is king of palette swapping; in general, rather than introducing new monsters, it just changes the color and level of the old ones, which isn't very cool. Also, the attack animations for spells are repetitive, and way too long, and are poor quality anyway, but they can be turned off. The entire game, actually, is graphically plain, though that isn't too important in any sort of RPG, and there are some nice touches, like the character portraits.
The plot is actually very good, especially for a tactical RPG. It is linear, but very interesting. It is based on a Chinese myth, the same one which spawned Dragon Ball Z (although it is similar in Goku's name only). It is cool, without having a fancy presentation. Saiyuki also has a very good cast of characters, including the main enemies.
Saiyuki took about 30 hours to finish, but it is easy to play in small amounts, like one or two battles, so length shouldn't be a deterrent. I recommend Saiyuki, but not particularly highly. You should play it if you like tactical RPG's, but there are some better ones to play, like the Shining Force series, Front Mission, or Final Fantasy Tactics, especially as an introduction to the genre. Still, it is fun.

Samba de Amigo

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Music
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Even those of us who have tin ears can make music with Latin America's musical rattle, the "maraca". The idea in "Samba de Amigo" is to use visual cues to shake your "maracas" in time with the music's rhythm. Although that might sound easy, it's not. The visual cues prompt you more than just to shake them, but "where" to shake them, and in three levels between your head and your knees. In other words, think of "Samba de Amigo" as a cross between "Dance Dance Revolution" and semaphore. The game requires quick reflexes, great timing, and powerful concentration.

Samurai Champloo

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: Namco Bandai
Genre: Adventure
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Samurai Champloo: Sidetracked gives you the hip-hop feel and swordfighting action of the hit TV series. Breathe life into a "lost episode" of the show, as one of three playable characters: Mugen, a reckless samurai with break-dancing fighting style, calculated Jin who abides by the decorum of Bushido, and a mysterious new character exclusive to the video game. Travel through the northern land of Ezo (current day Hokkaido) in search of "the samurai who smells of sunflowers" - as you play, face foreign mercenaries, master swordsmen, diabolical assassins, mythical beasts, and gangster monkeys.
The core of the game's unique combat system lies in the innovative integration of music and linked attacks. The players can choose an array of combos based on the different hip hop grooves that they can swap at will. Music tracks become collectible, opening an extensive assortment of linked attacks that can be implemented tactically during combat.

Samurai Shodown

Platform: Sega Game Gear
Publisher: Takara
Genre: Fighting
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: Before there was Soul Calibur there was Samurai Showdown. OK, so it's sort of a lame comparison, but Samurai Shodown does make me think of Soul Calibur, because the similarities are there. It's a fighting game where, instead of relying upon mere punches and karate kicks, you're wielding broadswords and cleavers (though sometimes your weapon does get knocked out of your hands and you have to restort to fists and feet, which is a pretty cool touch of realism). The characters are colorful and varied: from big bruisers to samurais to slim, unassuming swordsmen. Also present is a ninja and a chick in plate mail armor and a cute little kung fu Asian girl with a bird. The fighters are big and well-detailed; the graphics are pretty faithful to the arcade version. The backgrounds are nice to look at too. In terms of actual play, there are a lot of combos and special attacks that you can execute, and Samurai Shodown seems to rely more upon strategy and critical hits then the typical 2D fighter, which is a good thing. You will definitely want a 6-button controller for this one. Are there any faults? The only flaw I can think of is that the game could have been a little faster. Sometimes the Genesis' CPU seems to get a bit bogged down. However, I am uncertain as to whether this is really a hardware limitation or simply game design, because I've seen Samurai Shodown in the arcades before (uh, quite a few years ago) but I don't remember how fast it played. Regardless of the speed issue, Samurai Shodown is one of the best 16-bit fighters available (the Sega CD version is the best 16-bit fighter, period). I like it a lot better than Street Fighter II. The fighting, characters, and the inclusion of ancient weapons make it a lot more interesting to play.

Scooby-Doo Mystery

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: Acclaim
Genre: Kids & Family
My Rating:   Rated: Kids to Adults
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: Featuring brilliant animation and cool puzzle-solving, Scooby-Doo Mystery plays like one of the old-fashioned text adventure games only loads more fun and with a 'point and click' style gameplay.

The game has 2 separate cases. The first is Blake Hotel in which Daphne's uncle has been kidnapped and it's up to Shaggy and Scooby to find him. The backgrounds and environment of the snowbound hotel are very atmospheric and it's loads of fun exploring everywhere looking for clues. Of the 2 cases I prefer this one.

The second case is the Ha Ha Carnival where an evil clown is running loose creating havoc. Shaggy and Scooby must explore the whole amusement park and figure out a way to catch him. It's not as atmospheric as the first but still has great animation. Some of the best seen on the Sega Genesis.

As expected, Shaggy and Scooby are the only gang members who do anything as Fred, Daphne and Velma wander off in one of their usual 'splitting up' manoeuvres. This doesn't bother me as Shaggy and Scooby are what the show is really about anyway.

Scooby-Doo mystery is so vivid and detailed that it's almost like an episode that you control. The only complaint that I can think of would be the rather repetitive music that only gets on your nerves in the second case.

If you can find this game anywhere it is well worth your time and money. Maybe a bit too hard for kids though.

Scooby-Doo! Unmasked

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: THQ
Genre: Platformer
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition:
Edition: Summary: Scooby-Doo fans will be pleased to hear, the Scooby gang is back in another horror-filled adventure in Scooby-Doo: Unmasked. This time the slobbering wonder dog with an eating disorder has some nifty power-ups to help him as well as access to three ultra power-up costumes: a Robin Hood-like archer costume that allows Scooby to shoot toilet plungers at enemies, a bat suit which gives Scooby flying and gliding abilities, and a kung fu outfit which instantly turns Scooby into an ultra sleek kung fu master. You'll need the help of all three costumes too, as the enemies are harder than in previous Scooby-Doo games. The story begins when Fred takes his girl Daphne and friends Velma, Shaggy and Scooby to an up-and-coming special effects house to his cousin Jed. The proprietor of Monstrous Fright & Magic: Monsters While You Wait claims Jed is a thief who trashed the place trying to steal Mubber, a super material that can be formed into anything. Scooby, controlled in conventional 3rd person action platforming, transitions between forward moving and sidescrolling platforming segements, spins around furiously to attack and break crates, slides, and belly-flop to crush stronger object with absolute Scoo-Doobly-Doo damage. Each environment offers a set of fairly large sub-sections, within each a variety of challenges. Expect conveyor belts, flame spouts, steam vents, green crap, electrified water, big balloons and other such dangers. Scooby-Doo! Unmasked consists of three sprawling worlds and eleven levels that include Chinatown, a rollercoaster world, and a museum. Each level is packed with an incredible amount of action and things to do and discover, including lots of mini games. The camera has seen a large improvement over past Scooby installments, where it was difficult to even see where you were supposed to land. The art style takes a distinctive turn for the best with soft, warm colors and a very cartoonish look that's ea

Scooby-Doo!: Classic Creep Capers

Platform: Nintendo 64
Publisher: THQ
Genre: Adventure
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: Scooby Doo! Classic Creep Capers is a single-player game in which the goal is to solve three mysteries (two of them based on classic episodes; the other is all new). You play the game as Shaggy while Scooby-Doo tags along, nipping at your heels as you move around the game's various levels. The graphics are completely cartoon-style, and the game is played from a third-person perspective./ Nobody actually dies in this game, which is good. So, instead of the life meter common to most adventure games, Classic Creep Capers has a courage meter, which lets you know how much more fright Shag and Scoob can stand without bolting out of the level and having to start anew. Each time something scares them--which happens pretty frequently--they lose some of their courage, and the game pauses to feature a shake animation./ The gameplay is very straightforward--sometimes inanely so. What you're asked to do is move Shaggy through each level, picking up clues and various other items that can be used to trap the villainous level bosses. You can't proceed from one level to the next until you've picked up everything./ While unraveling these mysteries, players use the A button for practically everything. The player presses it to search for things, pick up items, and to talk to people. The only other button used is the R button, which opens up the game's menu screen. It's just a matter of tapping the A button to activate a particular item and use it or give it to the gang to help solve the mystery. It's all very simple, which turns out to be one of the game's strengths./ Although the idea of unmasking fake ghosts will no doubt appeal to the Saturday-morning nostalgia of older gamers, this game is aimed squarely at the younger set in both its content and gameplay. --Todd Mowatt/ Pros:/ • Graphic style is true to the source material/ • Simple, straightforward controls/ Cons:/ • Voice-overs are lacking, with too much emphasis placed on Scooby's own skeletal sound bytes/ • Experienced gamers will find this game unchallenging/

Seaman

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Simulation
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: "Seaman" is quite possibly the weirdest video game to ever be released. It's also one of the most incredibly original titles in a very long time. And if you don't believe me, just ask the frisky Seaman, a fish/reptile with a human face--it isn't shy.
According to legend, this strange creature is the discovery of scientist Jean Paul Gasse. The weird-looking beast was documented to have an almost grotesque look about it, as it had the body of a reptile and the face of a man. Yet it was able to talk and reason with the doctor as well as your average human. And while the good doctor was laughed into obscurity after trying to explain his discovery, you have the opportunity to raise a Seaman from egg to its fishlike state and beyond.
Not only must you keep Seaman well fed and warm, you'll find that conversation (via the included microphone) with Seaman is a must. The scaly inquisitor will probe into your personal life by asking about your age, marital status, and favorite music, among other things. Also, if treated well this creature will spew its (usually sarcastic) rantings on pop culture, the Internet, and even reality itself. There's even a touch of sexual innuendo that may raise a few eyebrows. I doubt your goldfish ever did that.
The speech recognition is far from perfect, but there's no doubt that the gimmick almost always causes a smile when you realize how long you've been conversing with a fish and just how many words it does respond to. The simplistic graphics often make Seaman look like he's swimming in space rather than in a huge tank, but this game makes no claim to break new ground in graphics--it's the speech recognition that is most noteworthy. "Star Trek" veteran Leonard Nimoy acts as narrator, bringing all of the emotion of Spock (read: none) to his performance--yet somehow it works.
Since the Seaman can starve or freeze if not tended to regularly (raising this thing will take weeks), it might be a good idea to invest in another Visual Memory Unit to store the status of Seaman's habitat and your performance.
It's hard to say just how much "game" is actually in this title. Rather, "Seaman" offers an interesting life journey through birth, growth, death, rebirth, and change. "Seaman" offers a unique Dreamcast experience that is both disturbing and fascinating. "--Mark Brooks"
Pros: A very ugly fish that talks--how cool is that? Seaman can recognize quite a surprising number of words with the included microphone, and he talks back Easy to play Sarcastic wit (read: very American) and humor can be good for a few laughs Cons: Speech recognition is inconsistent (often words are completely misunderstood) Graphics are suitably simplistic but never really deliver the feeling that Seaman is swimming in water Probably doesn't taste good with chips

Second Sight

Platform: Xbox

As Vattic struggles to piece together the past and present, players will uncover a strange chain of events leading to a fatal conspiracy.

Secret of Mana

Platform: Super Nintendo
Publisher: SquareSoft
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: First things first, this game is one of my all-time favorites.

I've played and replayed this game so many times that I know every dungeon by heart, and the best part is that it never feels old.

Secret of Mana was able to wrap so many great aspects of gameplay around a charming story. Unlike the Final Fantasy games, which are all the same story just recycled and given a fresh coat of paint, Secret of Mana employs some subtle plot twists and suspense. Leaving the hero shrouded in mystery until close to the end of the story.

Secret of Mana also doesn't bother with the monotony of randomized battles. Like Zelda, it employs a visually aware combat system; you can see what's coming at you before you reach it. This helps you skip unnecessary battles without the tedium of having to select the 'run away' feature.

There are so many quirks about this game that make it special, from cannon travel to being able to play with up to 2 other people at the same time. No matter how many times I finish it I'll always want to go back and experience it again.

Secret of Mana is a unique RPG, which in and of itself is enough to make it a gem.

Sega Bass Fishing

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Sega
Genre: Sports
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: For those willing to take the bait, "Sega Bass Fishing" has an addictive gameplay hook that will reel in sporting enthusiasts and even a few hardcore gamers. This realistic 3-D bass fishing simulation shines with three distinct gaming modes, eight fishing environments, and 13 different lures.
Let's be honest here. Fishing simulation games aren't for everyone. Many hardcore gamers will likely bypass this title because they believe the genre lacks the instant gratification of fast-moving shooters. That's a shame. Though it might not be everyone's can of worms, "Sega Bass Fishing" does offer a subtle, highly addictive gaming experience that will challenge even the most seasoned of game veterans.
This isn't "Quake", to be sure. But you'll need similar gaming smarts and strategies to succeed in this water-based sporting environment. It takes a skilled aim and a steady hand to hook and reel in the largest fish, which are surrounded by smaller, less desirable catches. There's nothing worse than casting your lure directly at a monster-sized bass only to have it intercepted by a meddlesome minnow. We encountered more than our share of near misses, which gives us virtual bragging rights to "the one that got away."
While some gamers will prefer the subtlety of free-form fishing sans time constraints, this game also features a fast-action arcade mode that requires the player to meet a minimum quota of catches before advancing to a new fishing environment. An optional Dreamcast fishing controller (sold separately) makes the task of catching these underwater critters all the easier. The controller, which also adds a realistic rumble when you catch a fish, is a highly recommended accessory for the ultimate home fishing experience. "--Brett Atwood"
Pros: Near-perfect translation from the hit arcade game Eight realistic 3-D fishing environments Three different game modes to choose from Great control with optional fishing controller (sold separately)
Cons: Game genre will not appeal to everyone

Sega Bass Fishing 2

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Sports
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Based on "Sega Bass Fishing", this sequel delivers the same arcade-style gameplay but adds a number of new features, including a robust selection of 100 lures, the ability to cast anywhere, enhanced real-time monitors, and more. What's striking about "Sega Bass Fishing 2" is the leap it makes in terms of realism. The fish move with an elegant fluidity, while the water appears amazingly real. That's because this game's lakes are modeled after real-life ecology. You'll also notice that "SBF2" is stocked with markedly smarter fish. To prepare you, Sega adds the AI Angler, a computerized master angler who dispenses bonus lures and fishing tips.

Sega Rally 2

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Racing
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: "Sega Rally 2" is the sequel to an arcade game that made its home debut on the ill-fated Sega Saturn video game console. Despite the Saturn's demise, the original "Sega Rally" still holds a warm place in the heart of video game fanatics as one of the best arcade-style racing games ever created. Now the series follow-up hits the console system after a successful run in arcades. And with cars and tracks not found in the standup version, "Sega Rally 2" fans should be very pleased with Sega's efforts to enhance the gameplay fun for the Dreamcast version. On the flip side, casual racing fans may find the difficulty level a bit too advanced for their tastes.
"Sega Rally 2" favors more of an arcade-style fantasy physics model than its predecessor, but don't expect this game to be a Sunday drive. Those looking for an exciting romp behind the wheel will likely be disappointed after numerous sideline crashes and races end prematurely due to expired time. Purists and road jockeys weaned on the likes of "Gran Turismo" may be able to handle the challenge factor here, but casual arcade-style racing fans may find the race too hot to handle for long-term, frustration-free fun. "--Jeff Young"
Pros:
More replay value than the coin-op version of the game Beautiful graphics
Cons:
Too hard to be fun for many arcade-style racing fans Backgrounds tend to pop up dramatically when the horizon is not obscured by curvy road

Sega Rally Championship

Platform: Sega Saturn
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Racing
My Rating:   Rated: Kids to Adults
Condition: Missing manual
Edition: Summary: A killer app has been defined as the software that makes it worth buying the system. In the saturn's case, there's more than one killer app. For the Sonic Team fans, there was Nights Into Dreams. For the 3D shooter fanatics, there was Panzer Dragoon Zwei. And for those who just can't get enough of a good racing game... there is Sega Rally.
I have played a LOT of racing games in my time. I've played futuristic racers, arcade racers, motorcycle racers, water racers, you name it. But pound for pound, I have never seen a more addictive racing game with better track design.
Upon first examining this golden example of awesome programming, you might think you were ripped off. Three tracks (and one hidden one)? Two cars (and one hidden one)? Ahhh, but these are no ordinary tracks. These tracks are arcade perfect, featuring some of the sweetest, most stylish graphics to be seen on the Saturn. And the way the controls and track design mesh can only be described as MAGIC. You find yourself playing the same tracks over and over and over, trying to beat your best time. Trying to improve, trying to take those turns perfectly (and of course, trying to look cool watching the excellent replays).
Granted, Sega Rally 2 for Dreamcast is a great game, featuring awesome lighting, fun gameplay, and beautifully well designed tracks with loads of variations. But in my mind this game is superior. For pure, arcade style rally racing, this game simply cannot be beat.

Serious Sam

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: Gotham Games
Genre: First-Person Shooter
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition:
Edition: Summary: We could talk about the Serious Sam backstory, but that would be missing the point, namely to commit carnage on a galactic scale. The smooth engine, multiplayer options, and fast pace make this game a solid choice for fans of first-person shooters./ The interface uses the tried-and-true Xbox formula for shooters: the left thumbstick controls movement and the right thumbstick controls the angle of view. The extensive arsenal is something special though, with each weapon possessing a different efficiency so you have to find the perfect weapon quickly for each situation. For instance, the shotgun is a great weapon for up-close fighting among a crowd of enemies, but it's horrible at a distance or when you're stuck in the middle of a melee. The enemy list is also quite extensive. You will be fired upon, stepped on, stabbed, slashed, and electrocuted. Enemies will appear by land, air, and water./ What makes this game stand out and keep you interested, though, is its irreverent, offbeat sense of humor. Serious Sam makes outlandish comments throughout the game, rides cosmic surfboards between scenes, saves progress at Dr. Who-like telephone booths, and pays homage to the Indiana Jones theme song. And you can change the blood splatters between red, green, and hippy (flowers and fruit). Our only major complaint is level design. Even when you believe you've cleared a room, enemies can pop out of midair and injure you. By not allowing you to seal yourself off from the onrushing masses in appropriate spaces, a major strategic element has been missed. --Eric Franklin/

Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Fantasy
My Rating:   Rated: Rating Pending
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: Shadow Dancer is the story of Joe Mushashi and his faithful dog Yamoto. Together they go out and beat up the ruthless thugs of the Neo Zeed Corporation and it's boss the Union Lizard. It's a load of confusing nonsense and in the journey from Arcade to Genesis the plot seems to have been erased and events taking place in the game just seem like gobbledegook. All you really do in this game is jump around taking strange-looking villains out with Surikens.

To be honest, the arcade version of Shadow Dancer was much better. The graphics were far superior, the levels were cooler (levels such as the airport and junkyard are missing in this version) and the bad guys less weird.

Plus it's very, very short with only 5 levels all over in a few minutes. As it was such a cool arcade game it's shocking that a game so easy and tepid could end up on the Genesis. It was capable of much more than this and Shadow Dancer is really only a game for Shinobi completists.

Shining in the Darkness

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: This is the first game in the epic Shining Series by Sega. Before the Shining Force games, before Shining Soul, Shining the Holy Ark and Shining Wisdom was Shining in the Darkness. Yes, it is pretty primitive by today's standards, but not only was it cutting edge when it was first released, but the quality of the gameplay is what makes it fun to play even today. Moreover, the reason for the Shining Series longtime success was carrying this level of fun gameplay from title to title. Unlike all of the game other than Shining the Holy Ark, Shining in the Darkness was first person, leading a small group of adventurers through a deadly labyrinth, filled with monsters and treasures (Most of the Shining Series played as a small army of fighters campaigning across battlefields). Few games on the Genesis had the staying power of this game (Shining Force and Shining Force II were two other successes). What is also greatly overlooked about this game is the sheer variety of plot twists, monsters, magic, and items that became part of what made the series in general so special. Sadly, Sega failed to market this game as well as, say Final Fantasy, and most people never even realized what they missed. While most people will be hesitant to go out and get a copy of such an old game, try out some of the later games in the series. if you liked them, you should go back and see where it all began in Shining in the Darkness. This will work great for anyone who is more interested in a quality game with good gameplay and control and are not too concerned with great visual effects.

Silent Hill

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: Konami

My Rating:   Rated: Mature

Edition: Summary: A downright creepy "survival horror" title, Silent Hill succeeds where most Resident Evil-inspired titles suck: keeping you hooked and instilling you with fear throughout the game. Players are cast as Harry Mason in his desperate search for his daughter, who mysteriously disappeared after their car crashed into a gully outside of a desolate resort town./ The 3-D environments in Silent Hill are bathed in fog or darkness, making its dismal setting all the more eerie; this also allows for some spectacular lighting effects when using a flashlight in the dark. Granted, there are some pretty coarse graphics being obscured here, but it's a fair trade-off, considering the game's short load times./ Silent Hill is played from a third-person perspective, viewed from both fixed and moving camera angles. As with similar games, the viewpoint can be awkward at times, especially during combat, which here is so clunky that you should try to avoid it whenever possible--something you should do anyway, as this isn't Tomb Raider./ Rather than resort to cheap scare tactics, Silent Hill features a gameplay twist that works very well with its limited visibility environments. Harry carries a radio with him that crackles with static whenever the game's nasties are near, and continues until they're no longer in the vicinity or have been killed off. (Enemies may require further whacking when they're down, as they like to play dead.) Additionally, the supported Dual-Shock controller pulsates in a heartbeatlike fashion whenever you're moderately or seriously injured. --Joe Hon/ Pros:/ • Suspenseful story with bone-chilling gameplay/ • Short load times/ • Excellent lighting and fog effects/ • Five possible endings add replay value/ Cons:/ • Coarse graphics/ • Clunky combat/

Silpheed: The Lost Planet

My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition:
Edition: Summary: If you think you have heard the name Silpheed before, you are not hallucinating. A version of the game was released on the now-defunct Sega CD back in 1994. Silpheed was a shooter done in psuedo 3-D where, rather than moving your ship up and down à la Galaga, you moved your ship in and out./ Silpheed: The Lost Planet offers the same method of play. You still can't move up and down, though some enemies may shoot at you from above or below. Like most shooters, the game isn't about exploration and navigation, but rather it's all about dexterity and shooting as rapidly as your fingers will allow./ In this game you pilot a SA-77 craft that has gun slots on its left and right. You can put a different weapon on each side of the ship, and you can even fire them both simultaneously. You start off with two versions of the Vulcan cannon. As you make your way through the game, you will earn more weapons./ The storyline involves an alien race appearing just outside a planet colonized by humans. The aliens have taken over, and the retreating humans are followed back to our solar system by the pesky creatures. The entire story is told through wonderful full-motion video sequences, which, for some reason, were not done in the higher-resolution DVD format./ The sound effects are your standard shooter fare, so they're good. The music is a letdown, though. Nostalgic Sega fans will recognize the previous game's theme in one of the FMV sequences, but other than that, the music is completely forgettable./ The main problem with Silpheed is that it looks great, but it only plays and feels like an average shooter from an older game system. Nothing about the gameplay will get your adrenaline pumping--and that's exactly what a good shooter is supposed to do. --Todd Mowatt/ Pros:/ • Great graphics/ Cons:/ • Unimaginative weapons/ • Graphics slowdown often hinders the gameplay/

Silver Surfer

Platform: Nintendo NES
Publisher: Virgin Interactive
Genre: Action
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: This video game is pretty cool, but I find it a bit difficult. In the comic book, the Silver Surfer is nearly invincible. In this game, you get hit once, you're off your board and you die. What happened to the power cosmic? Go figure.

Basically, this game is a shooter like those flying around games where you just try to shoot everything without getting hit. Half the time its a side scroller, the other half it's a top view. That's clever.
The power cosmic comes in a small white ball that blows stuff up. Usually you have to hit things more than once. You pick up what look like F boxes or cards. The more F you have the more powerful you become. You can pick up orbs and now you shoot in more than one direction. You can controll the orbs so you can shoot to the side and back while you just shoot forward. The villians in the game are pretty strange. Firelord is actually a good guy in the comics and has basically the same powers as the Surfer. The Captain Reptile in the game doesn't really look like a pirate. All of his stages make him look like the lizard king of Hawaii. Then there is the Possesor. His level is kind of cool. Lots of classical sculptures. It looks like some corney Stephen Hawking music video. I know he doesn't have a music video, but if he did, this is what it would look like. Watch out for the flying vacuum cleaners in stage two! The rest of the game is too damn hard. You're supposed to beat all the bad guys, collect parts to some machine Galactus has so he can send you to some other dimension to fight who knows what. That sounds a lot like the comic book actually. However, it's really freakin' hard. Because this game is for the NES, I don't think it could be any better. Oh, I think I should add that the music to this game rocks!

My Rating:   Rated:

Edition: Summary: I purchased this game through the Playstation Network and I'm glad to see they are now releasing this game onto Blu-ray disc as it truly deserves it. I'm going to be buying this game for the second time because I like it that much and as a download it also eats up quite a large amount of space on your HD.

Siren: Blood Curse takes you on a terrifying adventure set in Japan. An American TV crew find themselves deserted on an island where they have come to investigate and document the legend of Hanuda, a "vanished village" where human sacrifices are said to have taken place thirty years prior. Each are eventually split up and have to face the dangers of the island alone. Another character, a teenager named Howard is also on the island and you will get to play each and every character in the game throughout your journey.

Sam and Melissa are a seperated couple who have come to the island and their daughter Bella has been brought along by Sam which Melissa isn't happy about. You get to play as Sam and Melissa and even play as Bella in a terrifying hospital level which involves creeping around in stealth.

The occupents of the island appear to be Japanese zombie-like creatures which vary in strength and difficulty as you progress. There are also some larger and very obscure and frightening enemies later on in the game. Each of the enemies and the characters show off some amazing graphical details and the game looks absolutely stunning. A fantastic part of the game with a huge enemy shaking a bus as you try to make your way through stood out as a really memorable part of this game for me which is one of many great atmospheric and frightening moments within the entire 20+ hour adventure.

Some of the gameplay includes fighting off enemies with various weapons, solving puzzles, shooting, combat, using memory and most noticebly sightjacking. Sightjacking gives you the ability to see through the eyes of nearby enemies and other characters whilst you still view the character you are playingin a split-screen mode. This works really well once you get the hang of it and comes in useful for when you are required to creep around or attack enemies from behind.

Siren: BC gives you the true feeling of horror and suspense that alot of survival horrors find hard to pull off. I was genuinely scared at moments and the game can make you jump quite a bit. The graphics are excellent, they're dark but you constantly have light sources and it can feel very eerie exploring the village. Some of the people who have turned into zombies are some off the collest looking zombies I have seen in a game yet.

If you love a decent story, great graphics, a scary/creepy experience and a decent length game with great characters and dicversity then you will love Siren BC. The game is seperated into episodes within chapters giving you a re-cap of what happened in the last episode, these are really cool and effective and if you want to just continue playing it doesn't interupt the game or make it less fluid in any way.

An amazing game that surprised me and became one of my best PS3 titles of 2008. 10/10

Overall though, I really like this game, especially for it's cultural value.

Edition: Summary: In "Slave Zero", players control a gigantic mechanized man who trounces through hyperurban landscapes, destroying everything in sight. Notches on Mr. Zero's belt include motorists, helicopters, tanks, pedestrians, and an assortment of robots his own size.
"Slave Zero" does a great job of communicating the difference in scale between the main character and the comparatively tiny people, vehicles, and buildings that populate the city. However, the controls are very complicated, utilizing every button on the Dreamcast controller (including the stick and D-pad separately), as well as combinations of buttons for additional control, such as picking up and hurling cars. Screams and exclamations from innocent bystanders seem unusually loud, and the complete absence of in-game music exacerbates the already slow pace of the game. Still, some scenes are stellar, and worth wading through the mediocre spots in between. "--Jeff Young"
Pros: Sci-fi "noir"-style graphics Highly interactive environments Exciting main character Cons: Slow pace Choppy animation Difficult control scheme

Edition: Summary: As soon as you start the game, you know that Snake's Revenge is a very different Metal Gear game. For one, you start off the game with a Beretta and a knife as opposed to your bare fists. For the first few minutes of the game, you'll be walking around the forest, dodging spot lights and strange flying craft. The storyline in this game is not as strong as in the first one. Also, the atmosphere in Metal Gear was so much more drab and menacing, wheras Snake's Revenge is full of bright corridors and sunny outdoor environments. This time around, it seems that the developers were more concerned about variety than game-quality. There's a train, a desert fortress, a bridge, a jungle, and many other locales. The newest addition to this game, though, is the use of a side view. The side view can be interesting at times, but I overall wish they had left it out. But to me, the most frustrating part is the end. After defeating the ending boss, you go out a door and arrive at door number 1, door number 2, and door number 3. I've played this game for hours and hours on end and I could NEVER figure out how to open them. Weapons didn't work, or even security cards. But in addition to that, you can backtrack through most of the game. Overall, Snake's Revenge is a good game for the NES, but it just didn't capture me the way Metal Gear did.

Sonic & Knuckles

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: 2D Platformer
My Rating:   Rated: General Audience
Condition: Missing manual
Edition: Summary: Sonic & Knuckles(1994). The fourth Sonic game on the Genesis (or 2nd half of the third, if you prefer to call it that).

Once upon a time, Sega became a worthy 16-bit contender in the early 90s thanks to the release of a fast-paced adventure starring everyone's favorite blue hedgehog, Sonic. Then the series really took off in 1992 with the release and success of its sequel. The Sega CD harbored Sonic CD, a worthy cult classic, though for some reason it became forgotten over time. This brings us to "Hedgehog Day" of 1994, when Sonic 3 was unleashed on the public. Originally, the game was slated to be one massive adventure, but in order to meet deadlines, Sega decided to cut it in half, give the fans the first part of the game early on, and save the rest of it for a later date in the year. In the meantime, Sega also thought about incorporating a special "lock-on" feature to this second half of the 3rd Sonic game which allowed one to stick Sonic 2 and 3 on top of it, and it would change the game to a certain degree. Of course, lock on technology was nothing new (*cough* Game Genie *cough*), but this was the first time that it was incorporated for a specific purpose, more of which I'll get into soon.

So this time, Sonic must traverse the rest of Angel Island after bringing down the Death Egg (again) onto a volcano and stop Dr. Robotnik once and for all. However, Tails is gone for this round in place of being able to play as Knuckles the Echidna for the first time. He taunted and tricked you all throughout Sonic 3, but now you can rip through the stages as him, or get your revenge on him at last with Sonic. Either way, S&K holds up as its own giant adventure, with the same size of levels, graphics engine, powerups, and other features as the previous game. I've covered the basics of the game in my Sonic 3 review, so I'll just go into the new stuff here:

PROS
-LOCKING ONTO THE OLDER GAMES GIVES THEM A NEW FRESH REPLAYABILITY. Stick it onto Sonic 2, and now you're traversing the Casino Nights, Hill Tops, and Wing Fortresses of old as Knuckles given the advantage of his new abilities. However, stick it onto Sonic 3 and you'll get the massive adventure that Sega wanted to release all along - in other words THE BIGGEST AND BEST SONIC GAME EVER CONCEIVED. Play as all three of the furballs going through both games and collecting 14(!) chaos emeralds to become... HYPER SONIC! On top of that, stick it onto Sonic 1 or any other Genesis game and you'll now have access to unlimited random Special Stages styled from Sonic 3.
-KNUCKLES IS A NICE ALTERNATIVE TO PLAY AS FROM THE OTHERS. He doesn't fly like Tails or jump as high as Sonic, but his glide, climbing, and smashy fists enable him to reach places that the others can't get to. Plus, a lot of the areas of certain zones that you traverse are completely different from Sonic's.
-COOL NEW BONUS STAGES. There are two of them now, and are far easier to access as well. One is an energy sphere magnetic place where you have to reach the top, and the other is a combination of Casino Night Zone from Sonic 2 and the Special Stages of Sonic 1.
-EXCELLENT MUSIC HERE! I'd forgotten how awesome S&K's music actually is, and is overall a step up from Sonic 3's. None are bad here and they seem closer to Sonic 2's soundtrack, especially the Flying Battery, Sky Sanctuary, and Death Egg themes.
-THE ZONES ARE VARIED FROM PREVIOUS GAMES. Yes, there is another volcano zone, but now you can explore new areas like the massive tombs of Sandopolis, the flying ruins of Sky Sanctuary, and the inner sanctums of the giant Death Egg ship. Plus now you get to take out the giant Flying Battery ship which attacked you near the beginning of Sonic 3. Strangely, this seems to be the only Sonic game without a water zone, which renders the Bubble shield useless, but oh well. In contrast, you will find more use out of the fire shield though.
-PERHAPS THE BEST FINAL BOSSES OF ANY SONIC GAME. There are a bunch of them to take out near the end, and when you collect all the chaos emeralds, you can go through a special Doomsday Zone as Super Sonic. Plus, Knuckles has more difficult versions and some original bosses of his own to fight, so it never gets boring.

CONS
-Since this is technically the other half of Sonic 3, THERE ISN'T A WHOLE LOT OF NEW STUFF FOR SONIC'S ADVENTURE. Pretty much Sonic has all the same attacks, animations, and powerups as in Sonic 3, and now with Tails gone, his reaching abilities are hindered. His absence is fixed, however, by locking it onto Sonic 3.
-THE SAVE FEATURE FROM SONIC 3 IS SORELY MISSED. With as massive as the levels are, being able to save after Sandopolis Zone Act 2 would be nice, but again, this problem is remedied after locking it onto Sonic 3.
-NO CHANGE OF SPECIAL STAGES HERE. Basically, these new ones are simply styled after the Sonic 3 SS's.

Don't let the 4 stars deter you at all. S&K is certainly one of the most memorable Sonic games of all, and if you liked Sonic 3, then I see no reason for you NOT to like this one. As a whole, Sonic 3 & Knuckles deserves its full 5 stars, so whether you want to find their original carts, or just play them on PC or the new Sonic Mega Collection, find them any way you can because these are some of the best 2D games that defined an age of gaming. GOTTA JUICE!

Sonic Adventure

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Sega
Genre: 3D Platformer
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: After several years in video game retirement, Sonic the Hedgehog returns as the star of a graphically stunning 3-D adventure game that blows away every other game in the genre. Sonic is joined by five of his friends in a massive quest that spans over 50 game levels filled with remarkable visuals and a pulsating soundtrack. Taking full advantage of the unprecedented processing power of the Dreamcast, Sega's development crew, Sonic Team, has designed several gravity-defying game levels that will keep gamers hooked.
Our favorite level is Windy Valley, which requires you to survive the stormy perils of a tremendous tornado. This tyrant of nature chases you relentlessly before ultimately sucking you into the air and up through its eye. During the chase, the tornado manages to tear up just about everything on the screen. This dizzying visual spectacle moves so fast that you will literally hold on to the game controller for dear life.
Assuming you survive the tornado, there are several more challenging areas to conquer, including a level that requires you to snowboard directly in the path of a fast-approaching avalanche. During the Emerald Coast level, you will race across a precarious dock as a killer whale attacks from below, destroying the wood planks underneath your feet while you attempt to outrun the crazed creature.
We also liked the numerous mini-games scattered throughout this title. When you least expect it, "Sonic Adventure" tosses in some old-fashioned arcade action, such as pinball or bumper car racing. In between, you can raise virtual pets, known in the game as "Chao." These characters, which are saved using the optional Visual Memory Unit (VMU), can be combined with other Chao characters exchanged between friends or downloaded via the Internet.
Gamers looking to show off the strong processing power of the 128-bit Dreamcast will definitely want to pick up this title. Simply put, "Sonic Adventure"'s graphics surpass those of any other game currently available on any home video game system. Let the Sonic assault begin. "--Brett Atwood"
Pros: Strong replay value Stunning graphics Bonus virtual pet game Six different game characters
Cons: May be too fast-moving for some players Awkward camera angles can inhibit gameplay in some areas

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Platform: Sega Game Gear
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Platformer
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: What I said above pretty much sums up my feelings about this game. I have played practicaly EVERY sonic game in excistance, with only but a very few exceptions, and am a HUGE Sonic fan. of all the games, I have had the least amount of fun with this one, why? Mainly because the difficulty curve went beserk and would make you think such a thing as a "difficulty curve" was just a figment of your imagination and never existed in the first place. I was un-able to even get passed the first zone because of the "dodgeball" boss, dodging has never been my strong suit in gaming. This boss however has gone done in history as what many people would call the hardest boss in Sonic history. And guess what? I used a level select code (which I would put here if I still remembered it) to get myself to the last level, the one you could only get to if you had all the Chaos Emeralds. And I beat the final boss, hands down, with little to no difficulty once so ever!! Losing too many times to count on the very FIRST boss, and not even losing one life to LAST boss? That's like, mayjorly messed up! Also Tails (my fav character) wasn't playable, instead you had to rescue him from Robotnik, (that's pretty much the whole plot, though with the way the Chaos Emeralds are hidden, I dought that hardly any one who plays this will be able to acomplish this, even if they beat Metal Sonic). I'd don't get it, the Genisis version is like SOOOOO much better! But if you have a Game Gear it might be worth a buy, it's dirt cheap (I've seen it for sale for 1 penny before!), and is better than most other Game Gear titles, though not as good as all the other Sonic titles on the system (such as Tails Adventures and Sonic Triple Trouble). Bottom line: It's not really that bad and is still fun, if you're a hardcore Sonic fan you probably should get it, and if you're looking for more Game Gear games you probably should get it, every one else get the Genisis version instead!

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: 2D Platformer
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Missing manual
Edition: Bundle Edition Summary: Though the first Sonic game for the Genesis will always be my favorite, this is a very close second. This time around, you have the spin-dash attack, making it easier to attack tougher enemies and you have a friend to help you; Miles "Tails" Prower. This game has more levels and better detailed graphics than the first and the best part of all; Super Sonic!! If you collect all of the chaos emeralds and get 50 rings and jump, you turn yellow, fast, and pretty much invincible!! The levels in this game are way trickier than in the first and Dr. Robotnik has meaner toys to fight you with. May the Force be with you (just some off-beat Star Wars stuff). Oh yeah, the levels and soundtrack are also better than that of the first game.

This also has a two player game where you compete as Sonic or Tails with someone else in racing through zones. This is good, but not as good as the single-player game.

This blows Final Fantasy out of the water!!

A comet's close call with earth has unleashed a bizarre assortment of mutant turkeys and aliens on the mountain town, and naturally it's up to the kids to save the day. While you switch between the show's four main characters with the tap of a button, the kids battle the baddies on the outskirts of town using an arsenal of weapons ranging from snowballs (including the yellow variety) and sponge dart guns to toilet plungers and cow-firing bazookas./ Though South Park fans will love the 3-D translation of the show's signature flat animation style and original voices, hardcore gamers may tire of the single player mode's somewhat repetitive levels and overall lack of intensity. But for those seeking a playfully entertaining romp through South Park's ever-wintry world, this game delivers the fun. We spent the majority of our testing time playing in the multiplayer mode, a fast-paced free-for-all that kept us laughing into the wee hours of night. --Eric Twelker/ Pros:/ • All of the TV show's twisted humor without commercial breaks/ • Fast-paced multiplayer gameplay/ • Inventive weapons/ Cons:/ • Repetitive speech/ • Less intense first-person gameplay may disappoint hardcore shoot-em-up fans/

Space Channel 5

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Music
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Space Channel 5 is well...Grooooooooovy. Hahah.
The game is pretty much well..Dancing. But the game is solid. You play the game as Ulala, A space reporter, but a very groovy space reporteri a galaxy. Shes got some pretty cool dances and has a grooooovy attitude. You must use your groovy dances and moves to save the planet from an invasion from some sort of aliens called the Morolians. The game is fun. As the other reviewer mention the game does get pretty hard even near the beginning of the game. The game has some really good graphics and some cool colorful retro type enviroment.

Lets get to it...

The graphics in the game are up to par with other hot Dreamcast titles. The graphics were pretty stunning at one point but are still good and not Outdated. But not AMAZING graphics, duhh. I would Have to give the graphics a star for that..

The sound is great. It has a pretty cool soundtrack with cool funky, groovy(yeah thats getting annoying) dance songs and really awesome beats to get to you in the game.

Gameplay is really fun with nothing but DANCE DANCE DANCE. But cool dancing of course..Like I said before this game is funky. And.....groovy.eheh. The gameplay shows off some really cool realistic dance moves that will have you dancing on your mind. HELL MAYBE ON YOUR FEET! Theres alot of cool levels to dance too and some cool hidden levels when you replay the whole game again.

The creators did a great job with this DC title. From great graphics to groovy dance beats to funky levels....and lots of hard repetitive gameplay I give Space Channel five for Dreamcast..

4.0 out 5 stars..

Use Spider-Man's superhuman strength to fight such notorious foes as Scorpion, Venom, and Rhino, and his spider abilities allow you to spin webs (of any size) to disable and detain bosses, swing around buildings, and creep along walls and ceilings. Spider-Man

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Fantasy
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: And not much in the way of playability. I liked the feature of taking pictures and selling them the Daily Bugle but there's not much else going on. There are only 6 levels and some of them, like the power station, are REALLY short. I liked this game when I was younger but I was used to more simpler games then. But it doesn't really even push the limited (then wonderful) capabilities of the Genesis. The graphics are very basic and Spiderman doesn't get much of a workout other than some unspectacular swinging around. There's also a very pointless 'go home for a while' feature that has no use whatsoever.
Don't get me wrong, it's miles better than that awful Spiderman/X-Men game but still not too Amazing. Pick it up cheap, finish it then trade it.
Hint: You MUST play the game on Nightmare mode to finish it otherwise you'll only get a couple of levels.

Spider-Man

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: Activision
Genre: Third-Person Action
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition:
Edition: Summary: Spider-Man: The Movie brings your friendly neighborhood web slinger to life with engrossing realism, proving that a superhero game of such complex nature can be achieved with nearly flawless and nonintrusive gameplay. Be it wandering the city's environs in search of villains, or just checking out your surroundings by web-swinging high above them, you truly can do whatever Spider-Man can. It's all here: high-flying aerial battles, the ability to web up and yank your enemies close for pummeling, and the capacity for crawling or web-zipping up, down, and over any surface--and that's just for starters. All in all, this is one involved game that does not fail to live up to the hype./ The game parallels the motion picture's story line, steering you through a progression of challenges that begins with the hunt for Uncle Ben's murderer and ends with a final showdown with the Green Goblin. You begin as Peter Parker dressed in his wrestling costume and must defeat a variety of thugs throughout each level before advancing to the next set of challenges. The game gets progressively tougher as you encounter, in turn, Shocker, the Vulture, Scorpion, and, of course, the Green Goblin./ Visually, Spider-Man is a treat: cityscapes unfold in realistic detail and are enhanced by sunlight shining between buildings; cutscenes offer seamless animation; interiors are painstakingly re-created; and Spider-Man and his enemies are well rendered, moving about the screen in clean fashion. As an added bonus, most characters are voiced by their movie counterparts, and the training mode features the sarcastic wit of Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell. --Larry White/ Pros:/ • Detailed controls bring Spider-Man to life/ • Challenging gameplay enhanced by numerous fight styles/ • Stunning visuals at every level/ Cons:/ • Camera angles slow to respond at times/ • Some interiors too dark/ • Repetitive one-liners/ Note: This review refers to the PlayStation2 version of this game./

Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: Activision
Genre: Third-Person Action
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition:
Edition: Summary: Spider-Man was a huge PlayStation hit (it subsequently appeared on both the Dreamcast and PC) because it finally allowed superhero action games to get out of their 2-D beat-'em-up ruts and into the 3-D world. And now the original game's sequel is more than good enough to catch PlayStation gamers in the web once more./ Enter Electro's story follows the plans of that nefarious, electricity-spewing bad guy Electro, who's trying to tap an energy source that'll make him much more powerful and dangerous. After a training level that familiarizes you with the game's controls (and new abilities such as the web-grab, where Spider-Man can send out a web and pull an object back toward him), you must web-swing around New York City and stop Electro, his goons, and various other villains from Spidey's infamous rogue's gallery. The cast of heavies include the Shocker, Hammerhead, the Sandman, the Lizard, and a few others from the first game./ The plot this time out is a little tighter than the last game's mix of stories, and the game draws on the villains' well-known personas to make each encounter interesting. Again, Spider-Man creator Stan Lee narrates the story in his inimitable style, and the voice acting is strong throughout. You can also seek out a few classic Spider-Man covers hidden throughout the game./ Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro is a great sequel; it adds quite a few new tricks and villains, and succeeds in terms of story and plot. It does carry over some of the camera problems from the first game, it depends a bit too much on puzzlelike gameplay, and the save system is still stingy enough to be annoying (you can only save between levels), but webheads out there aren't going to care, and it's nice to see such strong properties are still being released for the good old PlayStation One. --Bob Andrews/ Pros:/ • New boss villains/ • New powers, tricks, and goodies/ • Same true-to-the-comic gameplay/ Cons:/ • The camera is still erratic/ • The save system can be annoying/

At several points the road splits and you can enter a boathouse which transforms your car into a boat temporarily. If you drive far enough the seasons change as well (watch out for icy conditions during winter!) Edition: Summary: Fox McCloud is back, but he's left the on-the-rails, shoot-'em-up larks of his previous two games behind--this all-new Star Fox adventure sees the super furry animal in a very Zeldaesque bid to save Dinosaur Planet./ Although the control system is very similar to The Legend of Zelda's, Star Fox Adventures is no simple clone. It's your job as the mercenary mammal to find all the spellstones that will rejoin the splintered planet and defeat the evil General Scales. This entails much exploring of ancient temples and completing of subquests to help everything from Yorkshire-accented woolly mammoths to pterodactyls who've lost their babies./ The game may lack the epic scale and endless invention of Zelda but it has plenty of new ideas of its own, including a fully interactive dinosaur sidekick, some cool shoot-'em-up sections in Fox's spaceship, and lots of ways to upgrade a magical staff--your weapon of choice when out of your ship. To add some icing to the cake, the graphics are absolutely amazing, particularly the superrealistic fur effects. --David Jenkins, Amazon.co.uk/

Star Ocean: The Second Story

Platform: PlayStation

Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Ever see this equation? Two disks + two characters + over eighty endings = one great game. Yesiree, besides the impressive numbers, Star Ocean has another charm, addictive as it is, awesome as it may be. There aren't many games out nowadays about storyline and character development, yet this one seems to be less and less like a videogame and more and more like an epic novel. Every choice you make, every turn you take, every character you invite into your party, you shape your own destiny and blaze your own trail. These characters, in terms of emotion, are no doubt about it-- Real. You develop meaningful relationships and for a moment, call me crazy, but you are that character. The game isn't without its quirks: Meaningless battles make it hard to find what you're really looking for, and even more are those annoying thought balloons that pop over character's head when they're angry, sad, surprised, or just really deep in thought. But those little flaws don't detract much from otherwise great game.

Star Wars Episode I: Battle for Naboo

Platform: Nintendo 64
Publisher: Lucas Arts
Genre: Flight Combat
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Missing manual
Edition: Summary: Running on an enhanced Star Wars: Rogue Squadron engine, the nice game developers at Factor 5 have taken one last stab at the aging Nintendo 64 system with yet another entry into the wide world of Lucas. At times fun, but at more times frustrating, Star Wars: Episode I, Battle for Naboo has plenty going for it. Unfortunately, these good deeds are deeply overshadowed by a darker side./ Were you one of the millions who enjoyed the very popular Rogue Squadron? If you were, then get ready for more of the same, only this time wrapped around a lucrative Episode I license. This should appeal to newly christened fans and hardball line campers alike, as there's more of a concrete story line to follow than in the sidelined plot of RS./ Just as in the aforementioned classic, Battle for Naboo revolves around the collection of gold medals. New vehicles abound, and there's more than enough variety in the game's locales. The ability to switch craft at any time during the missions doesn't hurt the replay factor, either. If you discover the flash speeder doesn't have enough firepower to finish off that AT-AT tank, you can simply enter a different hanger and take control of a police cruiser./ The graphics are astounding, even better than what RS showcased. The game displays fantastic details everywhere--even the explosions are incredible. The sound, though, is very disappointing, especially when you consider that Factor 5 is behind the scenes. To the curious, Factor 5 has been one of the pioneers of gaming audio for a while now; the company was even chosen to helm the sound capabilities of Nintendo's next-generation GameCube console. With all of Factor 5's credentials, one might expect stellar sound. In many instances, the sound comes out muffled and the voice-overs are distorted./ The control and maneuvering should have been given more fine-tuning as well. This type of game relies on precise controls, but Battle for Naboo suffers from some sloppy movements and inaccurate targeting problems. This, combined with simplistic backgrounds and missions that are too straightforward, helps deflate what could have been a great game into a mere OK title. There's plenty of replay value here, but this game's certainly not for everyone. --Todd Mowatt/ Pros:/ • High replayability/ • Large variety of ships and locales/ • Impressive graphics/ Cons:/ • The sound is muffled and the voice-overs are distorted/ • Imprecise controls/

Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Lucas Arts
Genre: Beat Em Up
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: The battle that pits the noble Jedi Knights against the nasty Trade Federation continues in "Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles" in its triumphant form on the Dreamcast. For fans of very basic arcade beat-'em-ups, this is quite possibly the most improved translation of a bad PlayStation game ever made for the Dreamcast. Saber-swinging action on a console never has looked better.
Yes, the game has bright and shiny graphics that take advantage of the Dreamcast's extra processing muscle. The music and sound effects also are excellent, and probably are the elements that capture the atmosphere of the films most effectively. But the game relies heavily on the basic walk-from-left-to-right-and-chop-up-the-baddies formula. "Jedi Power Battles" really hasn't moved this style of gameplay forward from the now-ancient "Double Dragon" and "Final Fight" games of yore.
Fortunately, LucasArts made quite a few wise tweaks for this new version. In addition to the original playable characters (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Mace Windu), the Dreamcast version adds the speedy Ki-Adi-Mundi. In addition to distinctive speed, strength, and personal style of saber attack, each character has special Force powers that get stronger as the game progresses. Of course, using your lightsaber like a Louisville Slugger to hit laser blasts into line drives is the coolest Jedi trick in the game.
The Dreamcast version runs very quickly and smoothly (supposedly at 60 frames per second), no matter how much action is taking place on the screen. New to this version are training levels for up-and-coming Jedis and a cool "mano a mano" fighting mode (think "Street Fighter" with lightsabers) that's good for a few laughs.
Without the "Star Wars" name, this game could've been considered rather ordinary. But "Jedi Power Battles" delivers the fun for all who ever wanted a chance to go toe-to-toe with Darth Maul and all of his friends from the Dark Side. Neither original nor deep in gameplay, "Jedi Power Battles" does show that the Force is still strong in the Dreamcast. "--Mark Brooks"
Pros: Very good graphics, music, and sound Nice extras like hidden characters, training mode, and one-on-one fight mode add to its value Cons: It's basically yet another mindless beat-'em-up with lots of jumping Could've been a bit longer

Star Wars Episode I: Racer

Platform: Nintendo 64
Publisher: Lucas Arts
Genre: Racing
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Missing manual
Edition: Summary: Get behind the controls of a Podracer as Anakin Skywalker or any one of over 20 Podracers, as you feel the power of racing a twin-engine craft at 600 miles per hour. Visit eight distinctly detailed worlds as you make your way through Tusken Raider attacks, methane lakes, anti-gravity tunnels, and more. Each intense competition pits you against more than 20 opponents, as you do what you must to be the first to the finish line. With settings and sound effects taken directly from the Phantom Menace world, this ones sure to thrill even the pickiest STAR WARS enthusiasts, while the voice of Jake Lloyd makes the whole event that much closer to being in a movie theater. Each pulse-pounding race has do-or-die stakes, and if you fail to finish in the top spot, it might just mean your peril. As with most STAR WARS games for the Nintendo 64, the details elevate it above ones of similar styles its not just a great STAR WARS game, its a great racing game.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: Lucas Arts
Genre: Third-Person Action
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition:
Edition: Summary: As the room fills with poison gas, you and Qui-Gon race down the hall and stop in front of five Trade Federation droids. Your lightsaber hums to life as you and your master block and reflect the hail of blaster bolts, leaving the offending droids in pieces. As your enemies grow to seemingly hopeless numbers, you extend your hand in a Jedi force push. Again all that is left are fried circuits. Leaping over chasms, destroying droid armies, saving entire planets is all in a day's work when you are a Jedi. And we all want to be Jedi... right?/ In Star Wars: Episode I, The Phantom Menace, you assume the roles of Obi Wan, Qui-Gon, Queen Amidala, and Captain Panaka as they struggle to save Naboo and defeat the Trade Federation's sinister agents. Exciting battles, terrific sound effects, and a true-to-the-movie story line make this game a treat for any Star Wars fan. The graphics could be sharper, but the overall Star Wars experience is not diminished by this fact. Instead, the gameplay itself takes you away from an immersive Star Wars feel: it's just strange to see a Jedi use a rocket launcher. I was also hoping that lightsabers would cut through just about anything, but sadly this is not the case--some robots even need to be hit multiple times before they go down. And it's just sad to see a Jedi's progress in an outdoor level blocked by simple shrubbery. Still, like the movie itself, Star Wars: Episode One, The Phantom Menace overcomes its minor flaws to deliver a thrilling experience. --Allen Stewart/ Pros:/ • You get to use a lightsaber/ • Dual shock controllers vibrate with the saber's movement/ • Great music video of "Duel of the Fates" included/ Cons:/ • Graphics could be better/ • Voice-overs are rather weak/

Star Wars Jedi Starfighter

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: Lucas Arts Entertainment
Genre: Flight Combat
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition:
Edition: Summary: The force is truly with Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter. This first-person space shooter will appeal to fans of the genre, and will especially excite any Star Wars buffs: there's a lot of material in this game that covers the period between Episode I and Episode II./ The time prior to the events of Star Wars: Episode II is a chaotic one. Pressure between the Republic and Count Dooku is building, and the Count has a plan that will give him the upper hand. He's made a deal with Captain Toth of the Trade Federation, who intends to take over the resource-abundant Karthakk system. He has met almost no resistance, except for the alien smuggler Nym./ Aware that the Karthakk system must not fall into Dooku's hands, Mace Windu dispatches his former student Adi Gallia (now a Jedi Master) to the system in an experimental force-powered starfighter. She joins forces with Nym, and together they just might have a chance at stopping Captain Toth./ Jedi Starfighter has 15 story-driven levels and an in-depth tutorial. In all, the game provides over 20 missions, mostly protecting or escorting targets and blowing up droids and other minions of the future Empire. The action takes place in space, as well as in the sky over various planets. You can play as either Adi or Nym, and you can also play the entire game in two-player split-screen cooperative mode. The Xbox version has an exclusive head-to-head scenario called Coruscant Territory Capture--think Star Wars meets Capture the Flag./ The two main ships you fly are Adi's Jedi starfighter (the same ship piloted by Obi Wan in Star Wars: Episode II, Attack of the Clones) and Nym's strike bomber. Adi's ship is fast and light with four force powers (force field, force lightening, force reflex, and force shock wave). Nym's ship has heavier armor in addition to energy bombs, cruise missiles, proximity mines, and cluster missiles. The cockpit is set up similarly in both ships, so it's easy to switch between them./ This game is good, but there are a few weak points. The voice dialogue, while well-scripted, never shuts up and may drive you batty. The AI is downright dumb early in the game: for example, you can blast away at an enemy troop carrier, and it keeps going on its merry way until it's destroyed (the drones are somewhat trickier, but soon become predictable). The AI does improve later on, but some may not feel challenged even then. Lastly, the button placement on the already cumbersome Xbox controller is difficult--the zoom button is right next to the shoot button, making it pretty much impossible to do both at the same time./ Bottom line: Star Wars Jedi Starfighter is a fun space shooter--especially for two-player gaming--that shows off your Xbox. --Bryan Karsh/ Pros:/ • Good training missions/ • Two-player cooperative and combative modes/ • Sharper, smoother graphics than PS2 version/ Cons:/ • Too much dialogue/ • Difficult button placement/ • Dumb AI/

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: Lucas Arts Entertainment
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition:
Edition: Summary: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic takes place just a few years after the Mandolorian Wars, thousands of years before the events in the Star Wars movies we know and love. Two Jedi, master Revan and his apprentice Malak, led the Republic's forces to victory and pursued the Mandalorians into deep space only to return as Dark Jedi at the head of a huge fleet of Sith warships. Only the Force powers of the Jedi Bastila prevented the Sith from overwhelming the Republic's weakened forces. At the start of the game Malak has usurped control of the Sith by betraying Revan and has attacked the ship carrying Bastila and yourself. In true Star Wars style, the game begins with a bang./ The storyline could have been a standard coming-of-age yarn but is instead a genuinely interesting adventure told with humor, compassion, and respect for the source material. Your character has a mystical bond with Bastila, and the two of you share some kind of connection to the Sith villains Darth Malak and Darth Revan. The game's planet-hopping adventures are driven by your exploration of these connections and how they relate to your larger goal of discovering the source of the Sith's sudden fleet. During your adventure you can explore side quests minor (such as racing swoops or gambling) and major (such as uncovering the fascinating back stories of your companions). Star Wars fans will get a kick out of the rich lore introduced in the game, particularly the Tatooine storyline that reveals the origin and history of the Sand People./ Gameplay is an abbreviated form of Wizards of the Coast's d20 Star Wars RPG game system--anyone who has played Dungeons & Dragons will be familiar with the abilities, stats, feats, and bonuses in this game. The player creates a character as a member of one of three starting classes (soldier, smuggler, scout) and then later chooses a Jedi class (guardian, consular, sentinel). Joining the player's character are other Jedi, warriors, thieves, droids, a wookiee, and even a Mandolorian. Unlike the faceless non-player characters of other games, each member of the supporting cast has an intriguing history and even agenda. Up to two of these other characters can join your character at any time. Depending on who you chose to take with you, new dialogue and even intra-party arguments come into the game (put the Mandalorian veteran with the Republic patriot and you'll see sparks fly). Combat is real-time turn-based, meaning the turns are seamless but the player has the option of pausing the action at any time to issue orders or direct any character to use a certain Force power, ability, feat, or item./ Graphics range from adequate to exceptional. Building and character models are not impressive--about what you get in GTA 3. Lightsaber graphics and environmental effects (like waving grass, clouds, and weather) bring the world to life. Battles are just brilliant, with characters pumping out blaster fire at Jedi who dash, dodge, and even deflect the bolts back toward their assailants. Complete with sounds straight out of the movies, the thrilling combat is pure Star Wars./ All in all, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a masterpiece of Star Wars gaming. The pacing, balance of action and dialogue, clever puzzles and quests, and loving attention to detail have set the bar very high for role-playing games in general and Star Wars games in particular. Consider this a must-have game.--Mike Fehlauer/ Pros:/ • Captivating storyline/ • Clever dialogue/ • Star Wars feel/ • True story and dialogue support for either Light Side or Dark Side play/ • Brilliant combat graphics/ • Fascinating characters (the loyal--and homicidal--droid HK-47 is truly unique)/ Cons:/ • Occasional bugs in dialogue, movie playback/ • Cannot transfer equipped gear between characters while on your ship/

Star Wars Racer Revenge

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: Lucas Arts
Genre: Racing
My Rating:   Rated: Rating Pending
Condition:
Edition: Summary: Originally released for the Sega Dreamcast and Nintendo 64, Star Wars: Episode I, Racer was a decent title with its share of flaws--most notably its control and graphics. The game's PlayStation2 sequel, Star Wars: Racer Revenge, addresses many of the original's shortcomings and is a vastly superior product. Rainbow Studios--known for its strong racers such as ATV Offroad Fury and Motocross Madness--developed this game, unlike the original. The developer's prowess at creating racing games is evident, as this title features much better controls and more compelling races. Furthermore, it receives a nice graphics upgrade that showcases the capabilities of the PS2. This game is superior in every respect to its predecessor./ Game modes include practice, single play, tournament, time trials, and versus. Tournament mode is the bulk of the game. Players can beat it in fewer than three hours and it isn't particularly difficult. Replay value is added by requiring you to beat the tournament mode several times so you can unlock all the game's secrets. Oddly enough, the game's sound--usually LucasArts's forte--is hampered by an unusual effect: at times you'll hear the full Star Wars treatment, as John Williams's score and cool sound effects totally capture the feel of the movies, but other times you'll hear only the sound of your engine. The environmental audio is an interesting choice that wasn't executed very well. Audio and brevity issues aside, this game is one of the strongest Star Wars titles released for a console. --Raymond M. Padilla/ Pros:/ • Much better gameplay than the original/ • Excellent graphics/ • Tight controls/ Cons:/ • Extremely short/ • Not very challenging/ • Music fade-ins and -outs are weird/

You, as Luke, must lead this rogue squadron in a series of galaxy-spanning raids and rescues. To complete all your missions, you'll need good flying skills, fast reflexes, a keen eye, and a quick trigger finger./ You get to fly all your favorite ships: The X-wing, Y-wing, snowspeeder--even the Millennium Falcon. There are also some "secret" ships, such as the sleek Naboo Starfighterfrom Star Wars: Episode I, The Phantom Menace, a TIE interceptor, and, um, a '78 Buick./ The flight simulation in this game is first-rate. You'll find yourself leaning to the side as you pull a high-G turn in pursuit of Imperial TIE fighters. And the outstanding graphics and sounds are realistic enough to transport you to the Star Wars universe. Every detail is in place, right down to the individual Stormtroopers you can see running around (and trying to shoot you). One of the more impressive sequences lets you bring down Imperial Walkers by using the tow cables on your snowspeeder. Nice touch./ This is a single-player game, but you start each mission with a few wingmen from your squadron, and the well-done spoken dialogue between pilots and commanders really makes you feel like part of a team. The only significant shortcoming is the lack of a cooperative multiplayer option. With its excellent gameplay, varied environments, and interesting missions, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is sure to become a long-time favorite. --Eric Fredrickson/ Pros:/ • Faithful to lots of Star Wars details/ • Satisfying flight action, explosions, sound effects/ • Interesting missions and plot/ • See--and fight over--the Spice mines of Kessel and other famous Star Wars planets/ Cons:/ • For some reason, you can only fly clockwise when bringing down a Walker/ • No "easy" setting for those without The Force/ • Voices of Luke, Wedge, and Han don't sound like the real thing/

Seriously, some hard-core Star Wars fans might disapprove of this whimsical kart-racing game based on their beloved franchise, but the less uptight will appreciate seeing Darth Maul, Yoda, Boss Nass, and others scaled down to Tiny Tunes dimensions. The object of the game is to race around movie-inspired tracks, picking up dozens of power-ups (including speed and shield boosts and some vehicle-specific tuners), and, of course, being the first to cross the finish line. And rather than having the technical sophistication of a game like Star Wars Starfighter, the controls here are easy enough for the youngest Jedis to master.

Streets of Rage 2

Platform: Sega Game Gear
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Beat Em Up
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Missing manual
Edition: Summary: This 2 player side scrolling beat 'em' up is a pure classic. You can choose up to 3 characters to play from knee flying Axel, fast kicking Adam and athletic Blaze. The story of the game is you play as 3 rogue cops who fight through the rough streets of New York to fight the criminal underworld.
The fighting in this game is very basic but perfect for the Sega Genesis controll pads. It was one of the first games on the Genesis where you can actually pick up weapons off the ground, and hit your enemies with them. Weapons included a baseball bat, a metal pipe, a knife (that you can also throw) and a beer bottle that can be used to smash over the enemies head and then stab them with it. The game also has a trancy 80's soundtrack and very humorous sound effects. Such as, enemies screaming, Axel shouting loudly when performing his famous flying knee kick, women screeching and glass bottles being smashed over goons heads. This is a very fun game to play, even better with a friend. This was one of my favourite games when I was young (and still is today), which I have cleared about 30 times. For me it brings back a lot of childhood memories.

Strider 2

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: Capcom
Genre: 2D Action
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Strider first slashed his way into American homes in the '80s, with his self-titled release for the classic NES. After a subsequent appearance on the Genesis, Strider Hiryu disappeared from game consoles--until now. Strider is back in a truly old-school action game that will please fans of 2-D classics./ Upon first play, Strider 2 may seem like a mindless slashorama, with enemies coming at players from all sides. But there's more to Strider than brainless brutality. Hiryu can also jump, double jump, kick off of walls, slide, and cling to almost everything, which makes it possible to avoid most foes, with practice./ For better or worse, Capcom makes it easy for players to blow through this game by way of unlimited continues that let Strider start from the very point where he died. Luckily, players are graded at the end of each level, giving at least some incentive to perform well. --Robb Guido/ Pros:/ • Vivid graphics and huge bosses/ • Old-school action that requires players to learn the movements of enemies/ Cons:/ • Players can essentially cheat their way through the game because of unlimited continues/

The game, based on the NES classic, takes place in the not-so-distant future when the sport of preteens has become the sport of kings and national pride hangs on the home team's ability to triumph in the number-one worldwide sport. Gamers choose a national team and compete against eight other countries in tournament-style bouts. You can knock the competition woozy with all sorts of different moves (that slam-a-jam jump-throw is our favorite), customize your team by defining the attributes of your players, and play head-to-head against a friend's Game Boy Advance with the separately sold communication cable.
