Actraiser

Platform: Super Nintendo
Publisher: Enix America Corp.
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: I love this game so much, and have for years. It has two modes which are just so awesome. First, you have the side-scroller/action stages. These are awesome and a good deal of them require a decent amount of skills. Then there is the city-building/sim mode. It's so fun to play, but I've been told the sim part is boring to watch.
However, you're out on a mission to save the people and your world from demons and evil Gods. You encounter all kinds of neat scenarios in the world you preside over. People turn their backs because the other gods promise happiness, favored citizens are up for sacrifice, plauges, and family feuds.
This is one of the best and most original games I've ever played.

Advent Rising

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: Majesco Sales, Inc.
Genre:
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Advent Rising is the first in an epic trilogy of action//adventure games, offering precise, refined play-dynamics with action-packed adventure and style, wrapped in a visually imaginative universe. A common legend pervades the galaxy -- that of a powerful, highly intelligent ancient race that will one day deliver the universe. They are known as "Humans"; Many religious and philosophical views have developed around these legends, but a group called the Seekers knows that Humans are real. They consider Humans an enemy, and under the guise of peaceful exploration they've travelled the cosmos destroying human colonies. Until now.

Adventure Island

Platform: Nintendo NES
Publisher: Hudson Soft
Genre: Action
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: Hudson did a great job with this game. For anyone who has ever played it, this is an original classic. You are this pudgy looking guy who runs around on this island (kind of like a Super Mario format) killing things and at the end of each level, you have to beat a boss (who is the same type of enemy each time, but has a different head). All in all, this an excellent game, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it before!

Adventures in the Magic Kingdom

Platform: Nintendo NES
Publisher: Capcom
Genre: Action
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart Only
Edition: Summary: Capcom was definitely one of the leading creators of quality video games for the NES. And Disney's Adventures In The Magic Kingdom is one of those great Capcom games.

STORY: Goofy has lost the six keys that will open the gate to the Castle in Disneyland, and so Mickey enlists you to help find the missing keys, which are lost within Disneyland.

GAMEPLAY: The game opens out with your character walking about the Disneyland map in a Legends of Zelda format. You can choose between five different attractions to ride and find a key. The levels include: The Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder Mountain, Autotopia, Spcae Mountain, and Pirates of the Caribbean.

The Pirates & the Haunted Mansion rides are played in the traditional Mario style. Autotopia is a car racing level reminiscent of Mario Kart or Cobra Triangle. Big Thunder Mountain runs along the same driving idea, but you have no control over stopping the train. The most interesting level is Space Mountain, where Mickey gives you a button to press on the top of the screen, and you have a second to press it or damage your spaceship. By pressing the correct button, you press on in space.

GRAPHICS: As with the other Capcom games, the graphics here are superb for an NES title. The Disney characters actually look like their animated counterparts, and the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean levels are done beautifully. Some spots on the map look a little simplistic, but overall good.

OVERALL: A pretty good game overall, but some levels can get a little tedious after a few deaths (such as Big Thunder), but others, such as the excellent Haunted Mansion level, deserve play again and again. Some good replay value here, but not entirely thrilling each time around.

The way they constructed the action aspect to fit together perfectly with the puzzle/strategy aspect was seemless and flawless. Like the game or not, you have to respect the genius who came up with this idea.

Simultaneous two-player action with horizontal and vertical scrolling means you need cunning, instinct and flight skills to destroy the enemy... and survive!

Air Force Delta

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Flight Combat
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Disc only
Edition: Summary: Select from more than 30 different fighters as you take to the skies to defend a newly independent republic from its many enemies--for fame, for glory, and most of all: for a price.
Konami's "Air Force Delta" features simplistic controls with an emphasis on supersonic fighter plane action rather than the mechanics of flight. Those who worry about flap positions and realistic spin modeling won't find either here, but armchair top guns will enjoy the game's shoot-'em-up feel and ultrarealistic graphics.
You assume the role of a mercenary pilot flying missions with very specific goals, such as destroying a convoy of ships or knocking reconnaissance planes out of the sky. Taken one by one, these missions are enjoyable and engaging, but they are all pretty similar and quickly become bland. Succeeding in a mission earns credits to buy new planes--more than 30 beautifully modeled real-world aircraft are available. Unfortunately, the differences between the fighters are mostly cosmetic. While you may find a plane that performs better in a certain mission than others, they all pretty much fly the same way.
The graphics are impressive--but things tend to move too fast to afford much sightseeing. In particular, the fighters are extremely detailed and authentic. The first time you see vapor trails form on your wingtips as you pull a high-g maneuver, your jaw will drop and you'll begin to insist that your friends call you "Maverick."
"Air Force Delta" is a good "show-off-your-Dreamcast" game that could probably have benefited from a little more time in development. However, it's the perfect game for a quick flying fix. "--Aaron Karp"
Pros: Lots of fighter aircraft Impressive graphics at close range Very cool, cinematic "mission reply" option Cons: Bland campaign Not enough variety among planes

Aladdin

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Platformer
My Rating:   Rated: General Audience
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: While it may not be the most classic game ever to come out on the Sega Genisis, Aladdin is definitly a good game
The game has you taking the role of Aladdin (Duh) As he races through Agrabah, seeking to save the Princess Jasmine. Throughout his at times frustrating quest, he must jump through the cave of wonders, run through the streets of Agrabah, outrun lava boulders in a frustratingly difficult and exciting level, and take on Jaffar in a epic confrentation at the end of the game.
The graphics are bright and lively, with lots of colors.
The sound is quite good, with lively and catchy music, fairly good voice acting, and lots of boops, bumps and squeaks
The level design is at times enlighitining and maddining. Some levels, like Genies lamp, Jafars palace and escape from the cave of wonders are just maddingly frustrating to get through
Overall, Aladdin is a good game, but its frustration level takes it down a bit.
The good:
Bright graphics
interesting levels
catchy music
The bad:
nothing
And the Ugly:
really frustrating at times
summary:
If you can stand the frustration, this is a good game to buy if you find it at a low price.

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Infogrames
Genre: Horror
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: The fourth installment in the series that created the survival-horror genre, "Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare" doesn't quite live up to its legacy, as it more often than not resembles a shoddy knockoff of the franchise that has since defined the genre, "Resident Evil".
You can play "The New Nightmare" as either Edward Carnby, a paranormal private investigator and poster boy for the series, or Aline Cedrac, a college professor and requisite video game babe. As in "Resident Evil 2", the protagonists cross paths but have separate adventures within the main story, which, in this case, involves evil supernatural forces at work on the appropriately (but unimaginatively) named Shadow Island.
Although "The New Nightmare" uses the genre-standard, third-person, fixed-camera viewpoint, it adds a twist by bathing most of its detailed, predrawn 3-D backgrounds in darkness, and then equipping the player with a controllable flashlight. Not only does this create some rather impressive lighting effects, but it also heightens the sense of fear that is further fueled by the game's ominous music and sounds.
Unfortunately, the rest of "The New Nightmare" isn't very inspired. Its underdeveloped controls are on par with the first "Resident Evil", which might not be so bad if not for that fact that this combat-light game has you tediously running around looking for keys to match its many nondescript locked doors, as well as trying to find solutions to vague puzzles that all too often leave you in the dark. "--Joe Hon" "--The text of this review refers to the PlayStation version of the game."
Pros: Play as either of two protagonists, each in a separate adventure Impressive lighting effects Effectively ominous music and sounds Cons: Awkward viewpoints Clumsy, underdeveloped controls Gameplay is more often tedious than challenging

Edition: Summary: Ape Escape 2 is a game where you run around and catch monkeys...that's right son catch monkeys. As weird as that sounds, the game is pretty fun to play and has a unique control scheme.

The controls have changed slightly and the camera has gotten worse. This is still a very enjoyable game and is at least worth a rental. Azurik: Rise Of Perathia

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: Microsoft
Genre: Action
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition:
Edition: Summary: The design document for Azurik, the first role-playing game released on the Xbox game system, must have read like a recipe: take all the ingredients of a good console RPG (third-person view, tons of combat, a freaky little world to adventure in, and a world-threatening evil to defeat), mix in the role-playing stock of Zelda with the spicy action of Soul Reaver 2, and you get Azurik. But, while this game has all the elements to satisfy the hunger of Xbox role players, it comes off as somewhat half-baked./ The denizens of the planet Perathia are blue-skinned and wear what looks like Aztec warrior garb. To be sure, this is a strange game with an offbeat story line that pits the young warrior Azurik against an enemy who, through a massive battle, has shattered the elements that power the world into tiny gems. Azurik must quest for these gems, fighting evil creatures with his massive two-bladed axe-staff and solving puzzles to achieve his objective and restore the world. The gems represent earth, air, fire, and water; the game's massive and generally well-designed levels follow that theme as well./ The graphics are up to the task and often impress. Specifically the monsters and the game's sense of scale: rooms and some of the boss monsters are enormous. The special effects are good, particularly the weapon effects, but this is also the first Xbox game to feature some minor graphics glitches that indicate the game wasn't as polished as you'd expect from the company that also brought you the console./ The real problems with Azurik involve the unresponsive controls, which suffer from a tiny but noticeable amount of lag. Azurik looks cool while swinging his weapon, but you'll never feel in complete control. Since combat is 90 percent of this game, poor combat control is a serious flaw. Also the controls aren't customizable at all. You'd think with the hard drive space they could easily offer this option, but instead you're stuck with the default controls: A for jab, B for a sweep attack, and Y for jump. The trigger is used for special magical attacks involving the gems you'll pick up./ Azurik isn't a bad game, but it's a shame that its main flaws (control and options) are due to problems that could have been corrected with a little more development time. --Bob Andrews/ Pros:/ • A unique, blue hero/ • Quirky story/ • Great level design/ Cons:/ • Poor controls/ • Some graphics glitches/
