Oddworld Adventures 2

Platform: Game Boy Color
Publisher: Goodtimes Interactive
Genre: Adventure/ Sci-Fi
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Oddworld Adventures 2 offers technical and gameplay enhancements over its predecessor with Game Boy Color support, slightly enhanced graphics, and an increase in challenges found within the game--but those don't necessarily make this a great title. Anyone who has guided Abe through the Oddworld series on the PlayStation or PC will be disappointed with this lackluster translation./ Oddworld Adventures 2's graphics are an enormous letdown--this looks bad even by Game Boy Color standards. The Abe series on the PlayStation is famous for its incredible visuals, and this game may achieve an equal level of infamy for its blurry backgrounds, pixelated characters, and overall lack of charm./ The Abe series is also known for the devious action-based side-scrolling puzzles that make up the bulk of its gameplay, and the same style of play is carried over into this game. You can possess enemies and control their bodies to solve puzzles, leap from platform to precarious platform, and manipulate levers, just like in the PlayStation games. Unfortunately, many of the puzzles in Oddworld Adventures 2 require precise control, which this title sadly lacks./ If you were a huge fan of Abe's antics on the PlayStation or PC, you might be able to forgive this game's bad graphics enough to enjoy the mildly challenging puzzles in this handheld version. If you have never heard of this series, Oddworld Adventures 2 isn't the best introduction. --T. Byrl Baker/ Pros:/ • Same basic gameplay as the grown-up Abe games/ • Many tricky puzzles to solve/ Cons:/ • Disappointing graphics and iffy control/

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: Gt Interactive
Genre: 2D Platformer
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: You want weird? Look no further than Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. Mild-mannered factory worker Abe has discovered that his employers at Rupture Farms are planning to use his fellow Mudokons as the main ingredient in their latest product, Mudokon Pops. Like any decent Mudokon, Abe aims to rescue his peers. He also is determined to seek justice in his battle to bring down the corrupt Rupture Farms. You help Abe carry out his heroic duties by possessing enemies, participating in action sequences worthy of an Indiana Jones flick, and talking to fellow Mudokons using the game's impressive "gamespeak" feature, which allows multiple characters to communicate with each other using your control pad./ The graphics in Abe's Oddyssee convey a unique personality, which is often lacking in platform action games. Still, a few pretty game environments will not distract you from the devious puzzles scattered throughout the game. Fortunately, you never run out of lives in Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. Instead, Abe rematerializes immediately after you "die" and the game continues from the last checkpoint you reached. This approach encourages exploration, which you'll want to do anyway since this is one of the most beautiful 2-D games we've seen. --T. Byrl Baker/ Pros:/ • Gorgeous graphics and cut-scenes/ • Challenging puzzles/ • Entertaining story/ Cons:/ • Many puzzles require perfect timing, which can be difficult to master/

Condition: Complete

As war broke out, the once-great nation became a wasteland. As a demon lord named Odin schemes to conquer it, a far-off sorceror plans to use ancient magic that will bring an apocalypse. Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber

Platform: Nintendo 64
Publisher:
Genre: Role-Playing/ Strategy
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Missing manual
Edition: Summary: Nintendo 64 gamers have been waiting a long time for a true role-playing game to come along for their system. Now that wait is over. Like a good book, Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber will hold your attention until you either fall asleep on the couch or finish that last chapter./ Prior adventures in the Ogre series have left gamers wanting more--much more. Very few role-playing games (both then and now) have had such expansive depth. The series has allowed players to tweak every character, create specialized forces, and command them in battles through three different story lines./ Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber carries forth this formula in both creating and commanding your forces, not to mention choosing from multiple endings. The object is to face ogres, defeat them, and bring peace to the Netherworld. Each mission has a winning condition, which entails capturing an enemy position. A briefing before each mission supplies you with objectives and a map./ Unfortunately, not everything is happy in Ogre land. The music and sound effects have a lot in common with older SNES titles, which is to say they're not quite up to snuff. Graphically, some of the character animations are stiff, and the tiny icons are difficult to see./ Apart from those small gripes, patience is your biggest hurdle in this game. Like most RPGs, Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber is at times tedious. With more than four endings as well as three main paths to make your way through, any attempt to complete this game will greatly test your stamina. Ultimately, this is a masterpiece of sorts that only true RPG fans will be able to enjoy. --Todd Mowatt/ Pros:/ • Customizable characters/ • Multiple endings/ Cons:/ • Poor music and sound effects/ • Tiny icons are hard to read/

Okami

Platform: Playstation 2

Condition: Complete

Omega Boost

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Genre: On Rails Shooter
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: From the creators of the popular racing series Gran Turismo comes the space-action sci-fi shooter Omega Boost. This futuristic game pits you against a sinister computer virus named Alphacore. To conquer Alphacore, you must pilot an armed free-floating robot named Omega Boost through 19 diverse zones and, ultimately, travel back in time to stop Alphacore from changing history. Basically, the gameplay of Omega Boost is incredibly straightforward. Simply blow up each enemy that stands in your way. Enemies come in all shapes, sizes, and strengths. We were impressed with the amount of detail put into each enemy--in fact, we often paused the game so that we could better examine each enemy being blown to smithereens. Each zone has a collection of small enemies, a sub- boss, and a boss to conquer./ As you progress in the game, you can customize and upgrade your equipment. In champion mode, you will have to finish a level with a good enough destroy rate before you will be allowed to advance. This game also includes a replay mode, which will allow you to leisurely view highlights of your most intense battles./ While this game may be pretty to look at, the controls can be difficult to master. You'll definitely need to check out the training zones in order to properly learn how to navigate your hunk of junk metal. We became dizzy from the rotating 3-D and 360-degree environments, which can make your control seem more complicated during a busy barrage of enemy fire from all directions. --Carrie Bell/ Pros:/ • Interesting plot/ • Detailed spaceships and explosions/ • Full 3-D, 360-degree rotating action/ Cons:/ • Shooting action can get repetitious/ • May cause dizziness/

Outtrigger

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Third-Person Shooter
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Developed by Sega's renowned AM2 team, "Outtrigger" is an action game that can be played in either the first or third person; however, it clearly plays like a first-person shooter. The sparse story has you serving as a member of an antiterrorist group. The game's high-quality graphics run at a peppy 60 frames per second. Owners of numerous Dreamcast peripherals will be pleased to learn that this game supports almost all of them. This is one of the few titles to utilize Sega's broadband adapter. It looks fantastic through the VGA box, and controls best using the keyboard and mouse peripherals. Up to four players can compete offline and up to six online.
Single-player mode is another story--it gets dull quickly, especially compared to more established titles like "Unreal Tournament" and "Quake 3: Arena" (both available for Dreamcast), which have more variety. Controlling the action using a gamepad is very difficult--the keyboard and mouse setup is highly recommended. Users with small televisions may find four-player mode difficult to follow. Although the game's single-player mode is subpar, "Outtrigger" is a good choice for Dreamcast owners (especially those with broadband adapters) looking for multiplayer excitement. "--Raymond M. Padilla"
Pros: Excellent peripheral support Strong multiplayer mode Quality graphics
Cons: Single-player mode is lacking Tough to play on a control pad Weak story

As you emerge near-death, you decide to rise as the new Overlord -- and you'll have to decide how evil you're willing to get.
