NBA 2K

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Sega
Genre: Sports
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: When it comes to digital hoop action, there's no doubt that "NBA 2K" sports the most luscious visuals ever seen in a basketball game. It's not the best-playing basketball game out there, as it does commit some serious fouls with its questionable artificial intelligence. But like "NFL 2K" before it, this is yet another sports game that Dreamcast owners will want to show off to friends.
The clean graphics show some extremely well-detailed players, stadiums, fans, and even coaches. While the player animations aren't quite smooth as glass (there are quite a few speed-ups and slowdowns), the players do move in a fairly realistic manner. When you see the instant replay of your favorite power forward delivering a massive dunk, you'll cheer. To complement the visuals, Sega has added play-by-play and color commentary to document the on-screen action. While this does get a little repetitive, this feature ultimately adds to the atmosphere of realism.
"NBA 2K" shows some trouble with controls. This is most apparent in handling loose balls. You'll cringe as you occasionally watch long passes sail out of the court, resulting in mindless turnovers. This is especially painful to watch when the Dreamcast can't complete passes to computer-controlled players. These stupid turnovers can, will, and do affect a game's final score--and have even caused a few games to be restarted in disgust. On the positive side, "NBA 2K" contains a new finesse-based method of hitting foul shots that requires that you squeeze the control triggers in near perfect synch.
The create-a-player and coaching options make it relatively easy to lead your team from postseason TV watchers to championship ring owners.
While the 2000 season's prettiest basketball game offers more than just the most delicious eye candy, there is still a lingering feeling that "NBA 2K" could've been much better with a little more fine-tuning. At the very least, while "NBA 2K" is recommended, it is anticipated that the successor "NBA 2K1" will offer even more backboard-breaking fun. "--Mark Brooks"
Pros:
Spectacular graphics that show plenty of detail Play-by-play and color commentary add to the fun Easy to play, but different from most console roundball games Foul shots are a highlight Cons:
Graphics suffer from occasional slowdown for no apparent reason Controls could be stronger

NBA 2K1

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Sports
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Players who thought that "NBA 2K" was good are in for an even better game of hoops this time around with "NBA 2K1". Almost every area of the franchise has improved, and now players can hop online and challenge someone in Sioux City, Iowa--or anywhere else--if they please.
Player faces are much more recognizable, and the resolution and detail of the court is higher than it was before. The coaches, too, are more animated--raising their hands in the air as a three-pointer goes up and in--and the crowd is more three-dimensional and lively.
During the game, players will encounter better defense against lay-ups; also, they'll have to break down defenses with quick passing, and post up and back their way to the basket. On defense, the computer always looks for easy buckets, which forces players to double-team opponents and keep scorers to the outside.
Franchise mode is the icing on the cake, as players can draft a team, and sign their own players and free agents by making offers and orchestrating trades. A few more special offensive moves would have been nice; but, as is, this is a must-have title for fanatic and casual b-ball fans alike. "--Robb Guido"
Pros: Excellent graphics and improved artificial intelligence Players can go online and play opponents across the country Cons: Could have used more offensive special moves

NBA Live 95

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: EA Sports
Genre: Sports
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: It was a cold day in early March 1995 as I walked into a local video game software store. I really wanted a good basketball video game to accompany the current NBA season. I had just enough money to afford one game. As I peered at the wall pregnant with Sega Genesis games, I narrowed my search down to two--"NBA Showdown" and "NBA Live 95". I made the right choice.
Seven years later, even with the advent of infinitely more sophisticated and technologicaly advanced gaming systems, I derive the same ammount of enjoyment--probably more--from this revolutionary b-ball sim! It had everything you could possibly want in a NBA game: NBA license, all 27 teams, over 300 players, set plays, excellent graphics, superb play control and, best of all, tracking of player stats--I love stats!
"NBA Live" 95 initiated a successful series (by far the best) of basketball sims that continue to this day--the latest incarnation being "NBA Live 2002"--and continually improve! However, I feel a special fondness for that original 16 bit gem that has given me countless hours of unparaleled fun thoughout the years. Even if you have the latest in video game systems--Playstation 2, Xbox, Nintendo Game Cube--I highly recommend buying "NBA Live 95" if you are a basketball enthusiast. As a matter of fact, I am going to play a season game with the Bulls on "NBA Live 95" as soon as I finish writing this review!
Note: While both the SNES and Sega Genesis versions are good, the Sega Genesis version is the best.

Nightcaster

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: Microsoft
Genre: Action RPG
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition:
Edition: Summary: NightCaster is a third-person role-playing game with a heavy emphasis on action. With amazing magical battles and endless monster generators, NightCaster plays like the love child of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Gauntlet./ The malevolent NightCaster has cloaked the world in never-ending night, and monsters stalk the land in increasing numbers. You play as the young boy Arran, who has been chosen by a mysterious orb to stop the encroaching evil. Arran spends the next several years learning magic, and when he returns to his home as a young man, he sees that evil has almost overtaken everything. Now he must use his hard-earned powers to fight back the evil, and put an end to the NightCaster!/ In NightCaster, monsters are the name of the game--you fight hordes of them to gain new magical spells. There are four schools of magic: water, fire, light, and darkness. You can choose to specialize in one school, which will give you increased attack power in that school. Magic affects the various creatures differently, however, and you learn by trial and error which attacks are the most effective. Throughout the game, you unlock more powerful magic as you complete quests, and your character actually ages as the game progresses! By the end of the game, you are an old--and very powerful--wizard./ The coolest thing in NightCaster by far is Arran's magical staff. On its tip sits an orb that's the focus of your magical power. Those familiar with Navi and the Z-Targeting system from Zelda 64 will love this--with your right thumb pad, you can have the orb fly off the staff to scout (and illuminate) areas around you. Unlike with the Z-Targeting system, you can control where the sphere goes at all times. Indispensable in battle, the orb can be used as a target for your magical attacks./ This game's good, but it has some flaws. NightCaster gives you the ability to switch between first- and third-person views, but you automatically switch back to third-person when you enter a fight, rendering a first-player perspective useless. Also, while the game's talking tutorial is helpful, the voice sounds like TV psychic Miss Cleo. Initially I found it funny, but over time it had me banging my head against the wall. Lastly, the monster design is lacking--the monsters look like cute little potato bugs, or those snap-together plastic toys toddlers love. The truly scary thing about them is how cuddly evil can appear to be./ Bottom line: NightCaster is a fun third-person action-RPG romp, the perfect quick fix for hack 'n' slash cravings. --Bryan Karsh/ Pros:/ • One kickin' magical staff/ • Character ages throughout game/ Cons:/ • Tutorial voice from hell/

Nightmare Creatures II

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Horror
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition: Missing manual
Edition: Summary: Nightmare Creatures 2 didn't really have a lot of potential. The first installment for the Playstation was entirely forgettable and the sequel's premise appeared to be frightfully thin. Nonetheless, I was looking forward to a solid horror spin the oleý 'Tomb Raider' formula that would pass time. Yes, the game did effectively kill the clock but I was bored stupid, I may as well have cleaned my bathroom. Calling Nightmare Creatures 2 a 'Tomb Raider' clone is leaps and bounds too flattering. Everything about Nightmare Creatures 2 is dull; the battle system, the graphics, the story, the enemies... the list is long.

The Playstation version of Nightmare Creatures 2 looks very nice. It beats the life out of the limited 32-bit processors. On the Dreamcast, Nightmare Creatures 2 looks slightly crisper than the Playstation version. Yeah, you read that correctly, I said 'Slightly.' In fact, the smoothed over textures make the game appear sadly low-tech. The only thing the Dreamcast version's graphics beat the life out of is you for buying it. It seems this is a straight port of the Playstation version; the character models polygon counts are unmistakably low and the animation is shoddy.
The levels look fantastic occasionally but the draw-in is horrendous. The fog/darkness is literally so close in large detailed spaces (outside) the lead character can almost reach out and 'axe' it. For such painfully basic game in regards to visual presentation itýs just not admissible. If this was done for atmospheric purposes, which I doubt, the developer failed miserably. On top of that, background textures are a tad on the repetitive side, but not overtly.

The gameplay can be summarized in two words, 'ultra tedious.' You will either be fighting through totally spastic enemy encounters or searching for keys. Of course, moving around environments is a total chore. You character turns like a car set in neutral going uphill and walks like he injected Novocain into his legs.
The control is barely sufficient during fights. I can't even verbalize how poor the mechanics are when it comes to merely axing a zombie. The battle animation is so jerky that it is hard to tell what exactly the character is doing and the camera refuses to cooperate. Enemies often squeeze in cheap nonsensical hits into every fight resulting in a potent desire to activate a cheat code. Also, seeing the same fatalities continuously add to the agonizing monotony.

The story is cliché and forgettable. So forgettable, that I can't remember the just of it and played through the game a day or so ago.

This is definitely a weekend rental for the absolutely desperate. If you have nothing better to do, try it. Donýt say I didnýt warn you.

Ninja Five-O

Platform: Game Boy Advance
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Fantasy
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: Though it's an original game for the Game Boy Advance that's being released for the first time in 2003, there's a lot about Ninja Five-0 that feels rather familiar. The game has the look and feel of a Sega Genesis game released circa 1991, from the funky synthesized soundtrack to the level design. The gameplay is reminiscent of countless 16-bit action games, and the game is difficult in a way that most games haven't been for years. Ninja Five-0 is classic gaming in the purest sense, creating an experience that will truly challenge your skills while delivering some of the most satisfying straightforward ninja action seen on any platform in a while. The game gets straight to the action with the minimal amount of necessary exposition. According to the manual for Ninja Five-0, you play as Joe Osugi, a ninja that has decided to supplement his ninjitsu skills by becoming a detective. This makes sense, since again, according to the manual, it's the ninja's duty to protect the innocent from within the shadows. The manual is rich with absurd and amusing tidbits like this, which arguably add to the overall charm of the game. The story is as much of a story as a game like this needs; you're a good ninja, they're bad ninjas, and it's your job to stop them. The game gets straight to the action with the minimal amount of necessary exposition, such as letting you know at the beginning of a level that "hijackers have taken over the airport!" before cutting you loose. The gameplay is pretty simple and straightforward, but it's by no means easy. The action remains largely the same from level to level and has you collecting color-coded door keys, rescuing hostages, and, of course, wasting lots and lots of bad guys. Joe's a pretty adept ninja and can do just about all the stuff a ninja should do. He's got a standard shuriken that can be upgraded to a fiery spread shuriken and then a laser shuriken. He also has a sword for when you want to get up-close and personal with your enemies, as well as a screen-clearing ninja magic super attack. The most unique ability you'll have in Ninja Five-0 is a Bionic Commando-style grappling hook, which you'll use to grapple your way up walls and swing your way to otherwise out-of-reach platforms. The level design stays pretty fresh from beginning to end and pulls out all the 16-bit action-game stops. It starts off with some simple left-to-right walking and fighting and gets progressively more wild with moving platforms, timed jumps, and punishing environmental hazards like laser beams, spiked pits, and gigantic jets of fire, with each level punctuated with a challenging boss fight. The whole game leaves very little room for mistakes--accidentally killing hostages will take off a quarter of your life bar, many enemy attacks will knock down your life bar by half, and you're given only one life to complete a stage, though you are given an infinite number of continues. Indeed, the unforgiving nature of Ninja Five-0 may prove to be off-putting for those who haven't maintained their twitch gameplay chops, but the action remains so satisfying that you'll keep coming back regardless. At only five levels long, Ninja Five-0 probably won't take more than a week or two of casual play to beat, though an even harder mode is unlocked upon completion, and you can go back and replay any level you've already beaten in the game's time challenge mode. It's short, but it's a good deal of fun while it lasts. Joe's a pretty adept ninja and can do just about all the stuff a ninja should do. Ninja Five-0 isn't an incredible-looking game, but the graphics are serviceable, and, to its credit, each level has a unique look, with a minimal amount of reused level elements, and you'll fight a decent variety of enemies. Both of these factors help keep things fresh all the way through. One of the most unique levels, and coincidentally one of the most fun levels, takes place on a 747 filled with passengers and has you fighting swarms of ninjas and thugs that pop into the aisle and grab the closest hostage. The game has some nice little visual flairs, like the screen-clearing ninja magic super attack, which slaps a big kanji character on the screen while your ninja races around the screen taking care of business, and the boss fights have some nice touches too. The character models look a little chunky, but their animation is pretty smooth. The music in Ninja Five-0 is reminiscent of a second-rate 16-bit platformer, though in a good way, as it does a solid job of conveying a sense of urgency. Unfortunately, you'll hear the exact same tune through most of the game, save for the boss fights and the last few stages. The rest of the game's sound design is pretty standard fare, and it gets the job done. The saying "They don't make 'em like they used to" is totally applicable to video games, and Ninja Five-0 is a great throwback to how they used to make 'em. The game isn't terribly long, and the brutally difficult gameplay will keep it from appealing to players who didn't grow up with the three-life limit and no continues. But if you're up for some faux-nostalgic fun and some good, challenging ninja action, Ninja Five-0 is well worth your time.

Ninja Gaiden

Platform: Nintendo NES
Publisher: Tecmo
Genre: 2D Action
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: Ninja Gaiden (1989.) The first game in the classic NES Ninja Gaiden series.

Although the Ninja Gaiden series had existed in different incarnations prior to 1989 (including a Final Fight-esque arcade game), it would be in 1989 that the series' classic incarnation would be born. To create this new face for the series, Tecmo borrowed some elements from Konami's Castlevania series, and a ton of uniqueness not seen anywhere previously in gaming. The first of three NES Ninja Gaiden games arrived in 1989. Read on for my review.

THE PROS:
The basic concept of this game is nothing short of excellent. It's like Konami took the basic Castlevania formula and worked out most of the kinks that plagued that series. Much like Castlevania, you get secondary weapons (this is one of the coolest parts of the game, in my opinion.) You play as Ryu Hayabusa, a ninja out for revenge for the death of his father. The storyline is one of the most complex of its day, and is told in cinema scenes - a rarity in games in 1989. The sounds and music are also great. The storyline has plenty of twists and turns. The game is highly addicting, and it definitely ranks among my top ten NES games. Not many games have stood the test of time the way this one has.

THE CONS:
There is one huge problem with this game - THE PROGRAMMERS. These guys must have been experimenting with drugs when they programmed this game. For one thing, it is WAY TOO EASY to scroll enemies back on the screen (some even regenerate right when they die!) Continue point placement is another very bad issue. In the levels, if you die, you start at the beginning of the screen you die on - quite convenient. But if you die while fighting a boss, YOU HAVE TO START THE ENTIRE PREVIOUS SUB-ACT ALL OVER AGAIN! This makes absolutely no sense and will really get on your nerves in later levels. The game's hard enough as it is, and these production flaws make things even worse! Production flaws aside, the only real problem is the lack of a password/battery save feature. If the game hadn't had such poor programming in areas, along with a save feature, it would have been perfect.

OVERALL:
Overall, Ninja Gaiden is an excellent game. If you've got an NES, it's really worth picking up. Or if you've got a Super Nintendo, consider picking up the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, which has all three of the NES Ninja Gaiden games along with passwords. This was one of the NES's finest games despite production flaws, and you really should buy it if you've got the classic eight-bit system.

No One Lives Forever

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: Vivendi Universal
Genre: First-Person Shooter
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Cate Archer, the mod secret agent with the groovy clothes, deadly aim, and mysterious past, debuts on the PlayStation2 in No One Lives Forever, a port of the popular PC game. With a nod to Austin Powers camp, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'s mock earnestness, and the 007 movies' sophisticated flair, No One Lives Forever is a clever spy spoof with a sly sense of humor and compelling action-adventure gameplay. And despite its often sloppy camera and frustrating save system, it's an enjoyable first-person shooter./ Ms. Archer--"exceedingly competent, fiercely intelligent, and stunningly attractive"--is an operative for UNITY, a counterterrorist organization made up of stuffy British guys who wittily mock your qualifications during briefings. Given that the game takes place in the late '60s, you, as Agent Archer, have to endure your share of snarky, sexist putdowns from your UNITY colleagues, particularly in the early going, as you're an untested operative working difficult missions usually reserved for veteran professionals./ The levels are much slower-paced than in usual first-person shooters (though equally enjoyable), as you depend on your silencer and soft-treading (but stylish) shoes in outwitting your foes. The stealthier you are, the more likely you'll progress to the next level (although nothing beats a good bull rush on occasion). Fortunately, all this creeping past security cameras gives you ample time to eavesdrop on the entertaining conversations of guards and bystanders--one of the highlights of the game. The cutscenes aren't quite as good--some are extremely dry and long, and the graphics are somewhat uninspired--but the music is ideal, striking the perfect balance between spy-movie intense and airily clichéd. And like all good spies, Archer has plenty of gadgetry at her disposal, such as a lock-pick barrette, lipstick explosives, and, later, a robotic poodle./ The game's biggest shortfalls are its poorly designed save system, average graphic detail (this is a next-gen console, after all), and jumpy camera. Players can only save the game between levels, meaning you'll likely have to replay certain levels several times to reach the next save point. If the levels were more dynamic (i.e., the dialogue was different each time through), this wouldn't be a big deal, but the game's script and voice acting are only fun the first couple of times. By the 10th run-through, they're beyond stale. The graphics are solid, but compared to some of the other games currently on the market for PS2, they're nothing special. In addition, the camera suffers from some instability--if you back into a wall while avoiding gunfire, the camera often spins you around to face the wall, making you an easy target for sharpshooting guards./ However, it's still a clever title with a great plot. If compelling gameplay is your thing, No One Lives Forever is a solid addition to the first-person-shooter library, especially for fans looking for an alternative to intense action games. If you'd rather have a game that takes advantage of the processing power of PS2, however, keep looking. --Rivers Janssen/ Pros:/ • Never takes itself too seriously/ • Stealthy gameplay puts the "secret" in secret agent/ • Music fits the atmosphere perfectly/ • Clever level design/ Cons:/ • Graphics are only average/ • Frustrating save system/ • Jumpy camera isn't always reliable/

Norse By Norsewest: The Return of the Lost Vikings

Platform: PlayStation
Publisher: Interplay
Genre: Puzzle
My Rating:   Rated: Kids to Adults
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Way back in the Super Nintendo years, the Lost Vikings were big. The ending of the original Lost Vikings was rather cruel when it said that our heroes would return in Lost Vikings 2. Interplay announced about five months after the first game was out that it had started production on the sequel. After the project was lost in time (pun intended), we finally see the hilarious brutes return in their second adventure. Though, avaliable for both Super Nintendo and Playstation, the Playstation game is the clear choice. Players get voices and cut scenes for a little more cash. Though both games are not graphical wonders, the game's puzzles will have gamers, well, puzzled. It is truly a very challenging and addicting game that remembers its roots and honors them beautifully.
