Magic Pengel: The Quest For Color

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: Agetec
Genre:
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: I bought this as a Christmas present for my five year old daughter. She usually has to watch her older brothers play video games and is left out. She is artistic but obviously likes games as much as any kid. So Magic Pengel looked promising.

She loves it and the older boys like it as well (9 y.o.). It is quite something to draw something and see it come to life, walking around, throwing things, jumping, dancing etc. It doesn't really matter how well you draw - although nicer drawings usually make cooler (not necessarily better) doodles.

And I'll admit it - I've drawn a fair number of doodles myself - including a crab with spinning eyes and a trident, a mean robot named Bud and a yellow belt karate dude. Your imagination is the limit.

The combat system is simple definitely requires a little thinking - another plus - not just jamming the x button over and over.

Could it be better - of course! Load times are a bit of a drag - you eventually top out and can't go much farther - and the doodles don't do anything outside of the arena. So what? There is nothing else like it that I've seen where you can put a little bit of yourself into it and onto the screen. I hope there is an improved sequel. Till then, try it out and use your IMAGINATION.

Maken X

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: First-Person Action
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: First-person shooters--the kind of game where you run around shooting everything in sight from a first-person perspective--are commonplace on most gaming consoles, except (for some odd reason) on the Dreamcast. "Maken X" is one of the few first-person shooters for the system, but it is so unconventional that it ultimately deserves a category all its own.
In this game you play Maken, which is best described as a futuristic sword that has the power to possess people. The characters you control run around the graphics-rich levels, slashing their way through countless bizarre enemies as the plot unfolds. As the game progresses, Maken can "brainjack" some of the other game characters, and that ability to possess others and play the game from their viewpoint is "Maken X"'s real draw. Another strong point is the game's capacity for multiple endings. The conclusion is determined by the character that you choose to follow, which allows you to play through the game several times without the gameplay feeling stale.
Characters are very easy to control, which is a big plus given that most combat takes place within sword range of an enemy. At times, it feels like the game would play better from a third-person perspective, but the first-person gameplay is easy to get used to. "--T. Byrl Baker"
Pros:
Beautiful graphics that are free from slowdown Multiple endings Unique gameplay Cons:
Horrendous voice acting

Mario Golf

Platform: Nintendo 64
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Sports
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: Mario's illustrious career has earned the fella the right to relax, so it's no surprise that virtual golfers can now join him on the links... Mario style, of course. In Mario Golf, players join the star and his usual posse--Luigi, Pyoshi, Wario, Princess Peach, and Baby Mario, among others--on six themed courses, each with unique obstacles and landmarks recognizable from Mario's previous ventures. Despite one's expectations of a cartoonish "golf light" experience, the gameplay is actually on par with many serious golf simulations and is undeniably the best golf game for the Nintendo 64./ The game is equally balanced for pros and amateurs alike. Seasoned virtual golfers and perfectionists can choose a club, adjust the golfer's stance, gauge the wind direction, and apply a variety of spins to the ball. Casual golfers can let the computer caddy pick the best club and line up the golfer, and then simply swing away./ A variety of 10 classic and cleverly original game modes are available. Among the more interesting challenges are ring shot, requiring players to land shots through floating rings, and mini golf, complete with banked walls and ramps. In addition to the traditional tournament, skins, and match modes, golfers can play speed golf, requiring players to finish a round of golf as quickly as possible. --Eric Twelker/ Pros:/ • Great variety of game modes/ • High replay value/ • Strong multiplayer mode for up to 4 players/ Cons:/ • No hidden Mario Golf Kart mode (that we know of, at least)/

Mario is Missing!

Platform: Nintendo NES
Publisher: Mindscape Software
Genre: Action
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Many people have thought that educational video games would be good, beneficial, and most of all, fun for the younger generation. However, Mario is Missing, a "game" produced for the NES and Super NES, could not have made things any more different. It is one of the three teaching Mario "games" that seemed like what the Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man and E.T. were to the gaming industry when they were released: simply boring and unenjoyable.

The conflict of Mario is Missing, as the name suggests, is that Mario is missing. Now, it is up to his brother Luigi to help rescue him. This dull geography lesson of a game has Luigi going around the world, collecting famous artifacts and returning them to a Lost & Found in towns such as Venice, Italy. Three artifacts are required for each town, and then Yoshi can be found. Luigi is then able to move onto the next town, and closer to finding Mario.

Side-scrolling and some original Mario graphics are present, but the visuals seem to add absolutely nothing at all to Mario is Missing. The various towns and locations seem to be endless, and you will most likely go traveling around in circles before you'll have fun with this.

Parents might think that this is a way to get their kids to learn while having fun at the same time. Unfortunately, there is much more learning, whether it be useless geography facts or trying to navigate this city. I am personally surprised that this met Nintendo's standards, because it is, by far, the most lifeless and boring "game" that I have played for any Nintendo system. Education and Mario just don't mix, and Mario is Missing is no exception. I know that many people do not listen to reviews that rate a product low, but believe me, this does not deserve the Nintendo Seal of Quality.

Mario Kart 64

Platform: Nintendo 64
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Racing
My Rating:   Rated: Kids to Adults
Condition: Missing manual
Edition: Summary: Mario Kart 64, one of the first games released for the Nintendo 64 platform, is an updated translation of the very popular Super Mario Kart for the Super NES (SNES). And while the game clearly takes full advantage of the graphics power and speed of the N64, a few components that made the original so compelling have been left out of this release./ Still, Nintendo's expertise at sucking players into the game world is strongly evident, and Mario Kart 64 offers enough challenges to keep players (especially casual gamers) entertained. Placing a familiar Nintendo personality behind the wheel of a sputtering kart powered by a 50, 100, or 150-cc engine, the game lets players race computerized opponents or up to four other players on a variety of well-designed tracks. Because karts lack the power and speed of race cars, drivers must focus on collecting power-ups and nonlethal weapons rather than negotiating hairpin turns on two wheels. Grabbing and using on-track items is the heart of the game's fun: a strategically-placed banana peel sends the unlucky victim into a spin, nailing an opponent with a turtle shell launches their vehicle skyward, and a rocket provides a quick boost to near-breakneck speeds, if only for a moment./ The multiplayer mode provides enormously chaotic fun for up to four players--flip it on at a party and watch the guests congregate around the screen. --Eric Twelker/ Pros:/ • Well-designed tracks/ • Simple controls/ • Strong multiplayer appeal/ Cons:/ • Computerized opponents sometimes pull off questionable feats/

Mario Party 2

Platform: Nintendo 64
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Classic Games/ Board Games/ Puzzle Games
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Missing manual
Edition: Summary: Every good game deserves a sequel, and the addictive, quirky Mario Party 2 certainly fills the bill. This multiplayer party title combines the gameplay of a traditional dice-based board game with several brief action-game segments, including updated versions of 20 of the best offerings from the original Mario Party. There are also 44 entirely new mini-game challenges that pit players against each other as they compete to collect the most stars./ Owners of the original Mario Party will be comfortable with this game from the get-go. Each player rolls a virtual die to advance through various board games, including pirate land, western land, space land, mystery land, and horror land. Several hidden adventure boards can be unlocked as players advance through the game. Each player aims to gain the most stars and become a superstar at the end of the game. Various mini-game challenges and booby traps await gamers as they land on some strategically placed spaces on the board./ While Mario Party 2 can be played as a single-player game (against three computer opponents), this title really shines in social situations. This is the perfect game to pull out at parties--assuming you have a few extra controllers in the house. --Brett Atwood/ Pros:/ • Perfect party game (up to 4 players can play simultaneously)/ • High replay value/ Cons:/ • Solo play suffers/ • Multiplayer games can take a long time to complete/

The Mark of Kri

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Genre: Third-Person Action
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Though by no means perfect, The Mark of Kri is an original and completely realized game experience. With an innovative fighting system, graphics that are better than you thought the PS2 could deliver, and lots of cool extra character abilities, the game offers a fresh take on the basic guy-with-a-sword scenario./ The Mark of Kri offers some kind of story about dark times coming and bad guys roaming the countryside, or some kind of yadda yadda like that, but the only important thing to know is that you must wander around collecting stuff and kill guys who attack you. There are several things that make this more interesting than it sounds, most prominently the amazing environments of moss-covered ruins. Reportedly former Disney animators were among the developers, and it shows, not only in the character designs and movements, but in the excellence of the sound and lighting effects that subtly deepen the game's lush, ominous atmosphere./ Then there's the fighting system, which lets you assign a button to each attacker, so you can attack enemies on all sides without worrying about which direction you're facing. This is a fairly simple matter at first, but requires more strategy and skill as the game progresses. The Mark of Kri includes a stealth mode, which allows you to sneak up and strike lethal blows before enemies can sound the alarm, and there's a bird you can send ahead to scout hostile territory before you enter it. These extra features keep the ol' killing-crowds-of-bad-guys routine from growing tedious./ We have only two serious complaints: one, the environments are not as seamless and interactive as they could be (if there's a cliff, shouldn't you be able to jump off it?), and two, there are too many things to keep straight, stuff like magic items and combo moves (but then again, the author is unusually lazy, and this probably won't bother most gamers). Overall, though, The Mark of Kri is rock solid, graphically beautiful, and thoroughly engaging. --David Stoesz/ Pros:/ • Beautiful graphics and art direction/ • Innovative and fun fighting system/ • Extra character abilities/ • Edgy, atmospheric sound effects and music/ Cons:/ • Convoluted system of items to collect/ • Environments are not interactive enough/ • Some cutscenes are lengthy and pointless/

Marvel vs. Capcom

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Capcom
Genre: 2D Fighting
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Who would win in a fight: the Incredible Hulk or Wolverine? What if "Street Fighter"'s Ryu teamed up with Hulk, and Chun Li had Wolverine's back? Speculate no more as Marvel pits its comic book heroes against Capcom's video game stars in "Marvel vs. Capcom".
All your favorite Marvel characters are available, each one a joy to play. The Hulk is huge, powerful, and slow, while Spider-Man leaps and web-slings around the arena, attacking with outrageous handsprings, flips, and lunging punches. Capcom's familiar "Street Fighter" heroes, as well as a few other heroes such as Mega Man, round out the character selection. Some of the lesser-known characters from both franchises make special appearances. It's pretty funny when Arthur from the old game "Ghosts N' Goblins" jumps onscreen to throw lances at Captain America. Each of the battles is a two-on-two tag-team match. Players can swap characters in the middle of a fight, and clever players quickly discover how to launch devastating double-team attacks on the opponent. Up to four people can play.
If "Marvel vs. Capcom" has a fault, it's super speed. The action is fast--really fast--and can quickly overwhelm a player who is used to the feint-and-strike gameplay of more sophisticated 3-D fighting games. In fact, gamer novices may be able to beat video game veterans by resorting to the old "randomly mash every button as fast as you can" trick. Aside from this, the game is a triumph in 2-D fighting. "--Mike Fehlauer"
Pros: Great cast of characters Tests superiority of superheroes Devastating tag-team moves Faithful hero animations Cons: Cramped fighting space Difficult, hyper-speed gameplay

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Capcom
Genre: 2D Fighting
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Just when it seems 3-D fighting games have permanently made 2-D fighting games obsolete, something like "Marvel vs. Capcom 2" comes along and proves just how deep and fun 2-D fighters can be. It's better than its predecessor in every way, and arguably the best 2-D fighting game to grace the Dreamcast.
The amount of playable characters is enough to put any fighting fan's salivary glands in overdrive. Beginning with favorites such as Spider Man, Wolverine, Ryu, and Chun Li, players can eventually unlock 56 characters. We had our hands full just mastering a few of these fighters, and getting familiar with all 56 would take months of intense practice. There are almost too many moves, all depicted with superb animation and augmented by several tag-team combos. When the match begins, you can pick three characters. Once things heat up, you can call in your pals to unleash a massive move on your opponent. This adds immensely to the game's depth, and button mashers will be in for a shock when they find that their mistimed tag-team moves backfire.
Visually, this game is intense. The large characters are slightly jagged around the edges, but that's more than compensated for by the massive amount of animation frames, colorful special effects, and stunning 3-D backgrounds that are loaded with detail. "Marvel vs. Capcom 2" also delivers a sonic performance that is nearly arcade-perfect. This is a must-buy for any fighting fan, especially those who have a couple of buddies to bash. Just be prepared to put in a lot of time in practice mode if you want to get good. "--T. Byrl Baker"
Pros: Brilliant 3-D backgrounds A massive number of characters to play as Tag-team element adds a fun strategic component to the gameplay Cons: Characters were drawn at low resolution

Max Payne

Edition: Summary: Max Payne's wife and baby daughter were slain by junkies hopped up on a dangerous new synthetic drug. For three years, Max has worked undercover to find the source of these drugs, and, just when he's almost got it figured out, somebody ices his superior and pins the murder on him. Now it's payback time as Max faces off against the Mob, the police, and much, much worse. Max Payne has jumped from the computer screen to the PlayStation2 and there's going to be hell to pay./ Max Payne uses extremely realistic graphics to showcase a gritty film-noir-inspired New York City. Payne stalks subways, tenements, nightclubs, and even government installations as he takes his vengeance out on a horde of gun-toting bad guys. Taking a page from the visual style of famed director John Woo, as well as The Matrix, Max Payne lets the player launch into a slow-motion mode generally known as "bullet time," which makes dodging enemy fire and dishing out your own return fire a breeze, all while leaping side to side. While this looks extremely cool to do, it also evens the odds and can only be used for limited amounts of time, making it a strategic as well as aesthetic option./ And speaking of aesthetics, the game is packed with exciting moments, weapons, and locations, even if the enemies get a little redundant after a while. The level design ranges from inspired (a multilevel parking garage) to humdrum (a warehouse) and several levels actually take place in the twisted wonderland of the hero's warped psyche. The introduction scenes consist of painted photos presented in graphic-novel style, which is a stylistic choice that pays dividends, even though the writing is hilariously bad and the voice acting is, if possible, even worse./ Needless to say, all this is violent, disturbing, and not at all for the kids. Pay attention to the Mature rating; it's not there for decoration. --Bob Andrews/ --This review refers to the PlayStation2 version of the game./ Pros:/ • Photorealistic graphics/ • Fantastic cinematic action/ Cons:/ • Terrible writing/ • Even worse voice acting/

Maximo: Ghosts to Glory

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: Capcom
Genre: Third-Person Action
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition:
Edition: Summary: A modern version of Capcom's Ghosts 'n' Goblins series, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory is one of those rare games that offers a solid update of a classic arcade title. This 3-D platform game delivers all the charm of its 2-D side-scrolling ancestor with current gameplay mechanics. In his latest adventure, Maximo returns to his kingdom to find it in disarray. His formerly trusted advisor, Achille, has banished the four sorceresses that govern the land and forced Maximo's true love to marry him. To save the day, Maximo must run, jump, and fight his way through five environments spanning more than 25 levels. Like his predecessors, Maximo must constantly worry about upgrading his armor and weapons. Play the game skillfully and you'll have a heavily armed fighting machine. Take too many hits and Maximo will be fighting villains in his heart-covered boxers./ Graphics-wise the game is very strong. The animations are smooth, the textures are rich, and the environments are detailed. The sound is an absolute joy, the effects are humorous, and the music is fantastic. Tommy Tallarico Studios has done an excellent job taking the melodies from the original game and creating updated variations that are equally memorable. Although some will find the gameplay repetitive and many will think the boss fights are too easy, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory offers an excellent 15 to 20 hours of platform goodness. --Raymond M. Padilla/ Pros:/ • Great 3-D update of a 2-D arcade classic/ • A nice variety of weapons and moves/ • Fantastic music/ Cons:/ • Boss fights are on the easy side/ • Gameplay can get repetitive/

MediEvil

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Genre: Third-Person Action
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition:
Edition: Summary: One hundred years ago, in the land of Gallowmere, an evil wizard was defeated by the honest citizens of the land. You are a knight that died in the first unsuccessful charge against the wizard's army, but the king, in need of a way to inspire his embattled people, gave you both a hero's burial and the credit for victory. Now the wizard has returned from the dead with a mind for vengeance, and you've been brought back from the dead to stop him. Perhaps the world's least worthy hero, you set out to save the land once again--for the first time./ The animation and humor are reminiscent of Tim Burton'sThe Nightmare Before Christmas. If this alone isn't enough to thrill you, the difficulty level will. This is one of the few games that seems to keep itself near the perfect level--difficult enough to keep you interested, easy enough to keep you from getting frustrated./ The perspective perfectly complements the gameplay and animation style: the 3-D follow-cam allows you, in most places, to look around with ease. And you'll want to take time to see the sights, since the game looks as good as it plays. This game isn't just for the hard-core gamer. It's for everyone. --John Cocking/ Pros:/ • Cartoon zombies/ • Gentle learning curve/ • Goofy good looks/ Cons:/ • Killing zombies can get monotonous/ • Addictive/

MediEvil II

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Genre: Third-Person Action
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Missing Manual
Edition: Summary: MediEvil took many players by surprise in 1998 with its zany British sense of humor and skeletal hero Sir Daniel Fortesque. Now, that bony knight returns in a sequel with a lot of fun gimmicks and the same solid play that made the first MediEvil such a hit./ This time around, Dan's been yanked from his eternal slumber once again, only to find himself inside a museum in Victorian England, where an occultist named Palethorn has wakened the dead. Dan must defeat these walking fossils, using his sword and other weapons, while also solving an array of puzzles. Dan's got some new moves to help him along the way, including the ability to stick his skull onto a walking hand so that he can search inside small cracks./ Compared to the series debut, MediEvil II offers better graphics, but isn't quite as funny. The original's 3-D camera problems haven't been fixed and in some cases are worse than before, but overall MediEvil II makes for a worthy follow-up. --Robb Guido/ Pros:/ • Clean, gothic graphics/ • New moves and more playable characters than the first/ Cons:/ • Hyper camera/ • Level design could have been better/

Mega Man 2

Platform: Nintendo NES
Publisher: Capcom
Genre: Platformer
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: It was in 1988 that Capcom released the second game in the classic Mega Man series, Mega Man II. The first game was an excellent, but as no one can deny, it was certainly rough around the edges in comparison to later entries. With the sequel Capcom set out to fix everything they did wrong in the first game. Did they succeed? Read on and find out.
PROS:
-THIS GAME INTRODUCED MANY OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURES IN THE SERIES. Among these are energy tanks, spike invulnerability when hit, and receiving helpful items when you defeat a Robot Leader. This was also the first game in the series to feature eight Robot Leaders - the number that was repeated in every "classic series" game afterwards. It's even the first game to have Dr. Wily's Skull Castle. Likewise, I was glad to see that starting with this game, Capcom did away with the "points" system of the first game.
-FOR THIS DAY AND AGE, THE GRAPHICS ARE EXCELLENT. Capcom's classic eight-bit Nintendo games were recognized for their high resolution and minimal glitching/slow-down problems, and it really shows here. Although the graphics are nothing too special by todays standards, if you compare these graphics to another company's game from the same year, you'll discover that, in fact, these were some of the best of their time.
-THIS GAME FEATURES SOME OF THE BEST STAGES/CHARACTERS IN THE SERIES. The game has Flash Man, my personal favorite Robot Leader, as well as Quick Man and Metal Man. Also, the weapons/items you get when you defeat the Robot Leaders are some of the best.
-UNLIKE THE FIRST GAME, THIS ONE HAS A STORYLINE WITHIN THE GAME. You had to read the instructions to get the story for the first game, but this game has an extended intro that basically tells you the whole plot of the game. It's no surprise that later games would copy this.
-THERE ARE TWO DIFFICULTY LEVELS. There is the original Japanese difficulty level, known as Difficult, and a new "easy" mode, which is called Normal.
-THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST "BEGINNER-FRIENDLY" ENTRIES IN THE SERIES, AND ONE OF THE ALL-AROUND BEST. If you're new to the series, bypass the first game and just start with this one.
CONS:
-THE PLOT IS ONE OF THE WEAKEST IN THE SERIES. It's your typical revenge plot. At least it's not as bad as the frequently-repeated "fake new bad guy" plot that later games in the series would use.
-YOU CAN ONLY CARRY FOUR ENERGY TANKS, NOT NINE. Fortunately, this is one of the easier games in the series, so this probably won't make much of a difference on your gaming experience. However, passwords DON'T save energy tanks. Keep that in mind.
-IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A CHALLENGE, LOOK ELSEWHERE. This is an extremely fun game, no questions asked, but if you're looking for a challenge, you've come to the wrong place.
OVERALL:
Overall this is an excellent game that stands the test of time as one of the finest entries in the series. If you're new to the series, this is an excellent place to start.

Edition: Summary:

This is a review of the MUSIC on this game! How many people would consider music on an old 8 bit video game as "art"? Yet listen to the opening titles and tell me if that isn;t the perfect example of working within limitations to produce excellent music!

The 8 bit NES was capable of producing only very limited sounds. Yet consider the beauty of the Proto Man theme, especially in the end sequence, with its reference to Mingus' "Goodbye Porkpie Hat"; or the thrilling sound of "Magnet Man" or "Spark Man", the latter of which ought to become a standard for musicians everywhere!

Play this game for the music! The MUSIC!!!

Edition: Summary: Mega Man's exploits have been taking place on a variety of different platforms for more than a decade, but recent attempts to bring old Mega Man into 3-D have largely been missteps. That's why we were chomping at the bit to play Mega Man X5, because it marks a long-overdue return to MM's 2-D roots./ Unfortunately, the game plays more like a rushed overcorrection than a nostalgic, side-scrolling romp. For example, you can now choose between three playable characters: Zero, X, and Fourth. It's a good idea, but the problem is that the characters are so different that this option actually destroys the fluidity of the gaming experience. In the original Mega Man X titles, you couldn't progress until you found a weapon that could be used to destroy a particular boss. In X5, bosses can be put out of their misery with the Z-Saber and the X-Buster./ But the game's biggest problem is its difficulty. The first law of game design is that a game should provide gradual, continual challenge. X5 just keeps getting easier and easier due to the endless number of checkpoints and unlimited continues. The result is Mega Man with training wheels./ By Mega Man standards, this game is truly a disappointment. On the bright side, if you are new to the gaming scene and are looking for a simple game that will help you improve your skills, this game might be your cup of tea. For most gamers, though, X5 is way too easy! --Todd Mowatt/ Pros:/ • Mega Man returns to his 2-D platform roots/ Cons:/ • This game is way too easy, with too many checkpoints and unlimited continues/ • Text-driven cut scenes and massive slowdown problems bog this game down/

Edition: Summary: You are Solid Snake, a superspy who's half James Bond, half Snake Plissken, and you are mean. Your mission isn't terribly new (infiltrate a terrorist base and blow everything up), but the gameplay is: your numerous enemies are watching for you, and you are encouraged to sneak rather than simply charge in. Every level brings new challenges. You fight snipers, invisible ninjas, psychic warriors, and even an M-1 tank! As the father of the modern spy game genre, this game is an instant classic.
Your allies and superiors speak to you via a cool, implanted radio, monitoring your progress, offering tips--but failing to give you the full story. The combination of a mysterious and engaging plot and high in-game tension makes this a thrilling ride. Campy humor also abounds as you rescue beautiful women, verbally spar with your allies, and blow up enemies in the bathroom. A user-friendly control interface allows for sniping, hiding, crawling, and running, and the graphics leave nothing to be desired. If you like espionage, spy movies, or just want to own and play a piece of gaming history, then this is a must have. "Metal Gear Solid" is one of the all-time greats. Game tip: Secretly attach plastic explosives behind an enemy, sneak out of the room, and see what happens. "--Allen Stewart"
Pros: Story well-integrated into gameplay Stealth favored over brute force Challenging puzzles Cons: Puzzles can be frustrating Torture scene too intense for younger gamers

More than 350 new and moderately interesting VR missions fill in some of the gaps in the original game's story. There are also five separate "Snake Stories" that act as new missions. These take place apart from the main story, making them feel less like an expansion to the sprawling events in Sons of Liberty and more like an unconnected romp designed to pad the original game. Unfortunately, the "Snake Stories" lack the thrill, tension, and exposition that made Sons of Liberty so special./ The "substance" is nothing more or less than a collection of disconnected additions to the core game Sons of Liberty, which remains unchanged from its original release: you play as Solid Snake in stealthy espionage//assault missions, infiltrating the lairs of bad guys to take down nuclear-powered bipedal creations called Metal Gears. Snake has all kinds of tricks up his sleeves: high tech weapons, the ability to sneak around undetected--he can even flip over the side of a railing to hide (a "Grip Meter" counts down, increasing the tension and making you pray the enemy walks away). Both a boon and a detriment to the game is its reliance on cinematic scenes to further the convoluted plot. They're well-rendered and professionally done, but you'll seemingly find yourself spending more time watching the game than playing it./ Substance is worthwhile for anyone who doesn't already own Sons of Liberty. That goes double for Xbox and GameCube fans, because the game looks much better on those consoles than it did on PS2. For those who've already played the original, this reissue just doesn't add enough, pardon me, substance, to merit purchasing it again. --Bob Andrews/ Pros:/ • New modes and missions/ • Graphics improvements on Xbox and GameCube/ • Skateboard mode on PS2/ Cons:/ • New content too sparse for players who already have the original game./

Edition: Summary: "Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots", is a next-gen experience complete with top-of-the-line graphics and surround sound designed for the Sony PlayStation 3. Featuring the most revealing display of Kojima Production's premier title, "MSG4" details the world where Snake must under go his final mission. In a world overrun by private military companies (PMCs), wars are no longer fought over nations or ideologies. Instead, the wars of the future are micro-managed by overarching PMCs, right down to the bullet. New gadgets and abilities fuel Snake's journey deep into the enemy domains of the Middle East, South America, and beyond. New gear includes "Metal Gear Mk. II," the ultimate reconnaissance tool, and "Solid Eye," which gives Snake real-time information on enemies and his surroundings.

"Old timer Snake returns for what is slated as the final installment in the "Metal Gear" series. View larger."

"New and old characters abound in "MGS4". View larger."

"PMCs have run amok and the world is at war. View larger."

"Octacamo will help Snake blend into surroundings. View larger." Joined by a familiar cast of characters, Snake must once again return to the battlefield to confront his lifelong rival, Liquid Ocelot, who is manipulating the world's wars from the one world where soldiers will always have a place. But Liquid Ocelot is not the only one who will be able to manipulate the world's wars--Snake can destabilize opposing forces by working behind the scenes, supporting the local militia as they fight PMCs, creating a smokescreen that allows Snake to move freely within the war-zone.
MGS4 is a next-generation adventure set in the aftermath of "MGS2: Sons of Liberty". The concept behind the latest "Metal Gear Solid" project is "no place to hide," and this edition in the series will force Snake into unexpected circumstances with an all-new storyline that breaks away in some ways from the previous "MGS" franchise entries. We don't want to spoil it for you, but, producer Hideo Kojima did reveal some very juicy tidbits about the game and the storyline when it was first announced at E3 of 2006. "Until now," said Kojima, "we've released two entries of the "MSX2 Metal Gear" series, and three entries in the "Metal Gear Solid" series. Add to this "Portable Ops", and you get a total of six titles. All mysteries will be cleared up in "Metal Gear Solid 4"."
Kojima was very clear about the finality of "MSG4", leaving gamers to wonder, "Will Snake die?!" When asked if the story will come to this sort of an end, Kojima responded without the slightest bit of vagueness, "It will come to an end." The "MGS4" E3 trailer showed a number of characters from the "Metal Gear" and "Metal Gear Solid" histories. This final installment is sure to deliver loads of cameos, in fact, it is rumored that nearly all the characters from the series will make an appearance.
In addition to a return of classic "Metal Gear Solid" characters, the gameplay systems from part three are also expected to make a comeback. The camouflage system from part three will make it into "MGS4", with the addition of "OctoCamo," Snake's most advanced stealth suit to date. The name appears to be formed from the words "Octopus" and "camoflauge," and players will be awestruck by the chameleon-like camo that changes with the surroundings. OctoCamo allows Snake to blend in with his environment as it digitally manifests nearby textures in real time. Think if it this way, if Snake is standing next to a wall worn out with holes, he too will appear to be riddled with holes. It has also been revealed that "MGS4" will have online play, but no specifics have been released. Although very little information is known about the game's visuals, rumor has it that "MGS4" is expected to be the finest representation of console graphics on the PS3, and it is expected that they will just get better and better as the game nears its release date.

Michael Jackson's Moonwalker

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Fantasy
My Rating:   Rated: Rating Pending
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: A 'fun' arcade game it may well have been in it's day, but one cannot play Moonwalker today without feeling dirty or somewhat guilty. Based on the 'movie' of the same name, Moonwalker is just as weird, bizarre and outrageously self-glorifying as Wacko Jacko himself.

You take on the role of a suspected pedo, dressed in a white gangster suit, who must rescue children (hidden in closets, drawers, garbage cans) from the evil Mr. Big. Upon being rescued these kids respond joyously with 'MICHAEL', knowing that they are now safe with the King of Pop. You need to rescue all the little sprogs in every level before you meet the end-level boss. But some children are too well hidden.

And who IS this Mr. Big exactly. The Jacko of 1989 fighting against a child-napper, who's motives for stealing kids is unknown in the game, seems prophetic in a split-personality kind of way. Just like in Thriller where he played a ghoulish, inhuman beast, eerily foreshadowing the future.

The gameplay itself is ludicrous. As you (moon)walk across the various levels (some generic, some inspired by his 'classic' music videos) you'll encounter baddies like gangsters and zombies and your amazing way of killing them is...dancing them do death. Seriously! It's not Jesus Juice, it's Jacko Jamming! You hit the special attack button and Jacko will suddenly yell 'OW!' before strutting his lethal stuff. After which, the baddies will be vanquished somehow. After playing this game you'll be exhilarated and mentally exhausted at Jacko's killer moves. You'll be reduced to a dribbling wreck. He's so good, that even passing-by animals will join in and shake their asses. If you ever wanted to play a game in which even an innocent dog is hypnotised by Jacko into dancing Thriller then this is for you. But I don't want to know you.

The music is no more than low-quality samples of Smooth Criminal and Thriller, as you should know this music follows Jacko everywhere he goes in real life and will change depending on where he is.

In the later levels, if you catch a falling star Jacko will turn into a huge robot. Of course. Like in the film, I just can't get over the feeling that Jacko only included this because he wants to see himself 100 feet high. It's ridiculous and has nothing to do with anything! But in a moronic, hopelessly out-dated video game I suppose it's okay. It was kind of easy to finish too and I never really played it again afterwards. But these days, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth and I can understand why no one would want to play it again.

Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse

Platform: Sega CD
Publisher: Sony Imagesoft
Genre: 2D Platformer
My Rating:   Rated: General Audience
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Fans of Mickey Mouse will rejoice over Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse (Mickey Mania for short). The game follows the famous mouse all the way through his glorious career, from start to around 1994.Gameplay wise, Mickey Mania is much like your typical 2D side scrolling action/adventure. You must guide Mickey Mouse through the several different levels and make it to the end of each one. In some of the levels, you just have to make it to the end. In others, there might be a famous Mickey Mouse character, such as the Moose Hunter or the Pauper, waiting for you. Finally, at the end of a few levels, Mickey will have to battle a boss such as a mad scientist, or Pete.In each level, Mickey must collect marbles, which he can throw at enemies. There are also other items that need to be collected, such as yellow stars for energy, and extra lives.Mickey Mania is great when it comes to graphics. Just about all the characters in the game are well drawn and look just like they do in the real cartoons. The levels themselves, and the backgrounds are also well-designed, and some of them are even 3D. For example, in one level, a moose chases Mickey Mouse. What's so great about this one is that Mickey doesn't run to the right or left, like the typical 2D side scroller. Mickey and the moose both run facing you, giving the level a 3D look and feel.If you're a fan of platformers or action/adventure games, Mickey Mania would be a great game to get. Even after years of playing it, it's still a lot of fun to put in and play from start to finish any day of the year. In other words, Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse really is a timeless adventure.

Developed by Rockstar Games, developers of the "Grand Theft Auto" series, it is packed with an incredible selection of muscle cars, tuners, exotics, motorcycles, luxury cars and an incredible selection of after-market performance parts and custom kits. Enter the ultimate world of Illegal street racing with no track, no load times, no rules: Welcome back to the Midnight Club. "Ready to roll at 245 mph?"

"Or dust them all aboard a rice rocket. View larger."
"Race past accurate LA landmarks. View larger."
"Reach out and touch startling detail. View larger."
"Check out multiple in-game angles. View larger."
"Remember to keep an eye open for cops. View larger." A Wide-open LA Like You've Never Imagined "Midnight Club Los Angeles" drops players into a painstakingly recreated version of world-famous Tinseltown. Broken down into five distinct open-world gameplay areas, linked on the game map, cumulatively these areas comprise a massive area, much larger than anything ever seen in previous "Midnight Club" releases and possibly larger than any existing racer to date. Within these areas, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Mulholland Drive and Downtown LA, players are free to engage in mission play driving them to attain and customize a wide range of authentic world-class street racing vehicles, or to simply explore the city, taking on all comers in a variety of race types as they wish. Regardless, along the way they will experience not only the visual realism of the iconic boulevards, freeways, and landmarks made famous in TV and movies, but also the realism of the living breathing LA urban experience. Here traffic backs up then clears as people go to and leave work for the day, weather systems come and go and day turns to night, then back again. All the while the race goes on. It's all part of the living, breathing LA. It's all part of the "Midnight Club". The Cars "Midnight Club: Los Angeles" will feature an astounding selection of vehicles in the Muscle Car, Exotics, Tuners, Motorcycle and Luxury car categories. At the time of publishing only a fraction of the total list has been announced, but a good sampling of what players can expect at launch can be seen below. Click the links in each category to see screen shots of the cars: Muscle Cars    Saleen S302 Extreme   Chevrolet Corvette Z06   Dodge Challenger Concept Car Bikes    Kawasaki Ninja ZX14 Exotics    Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster   Ford GT   Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder Tuners    Volkswagen R32   Pontiac Solstice   1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX Extreme Customization
"Midnight Club Los Angeles" continues the tradition of offering some of the deepest vehicle customization you will find in any video game. The hottest licensed cars and bikes in the world are at your disposal - kit them out, supe them up, and personalize them down to the last detail to make them all your own. Visit "the Club's" in-game garages located in Hollywood and Santa Monica and let your imagination run wild - tweaking and fine tuning through the following three different types of vehicle modifications: Performance & Handling - To become a street legend, you're going to have to tune your vehicle for maximum performance. The garage offers three levels of upgrades for virtually every component on your vehicle, but it's up to you to craft the winning combination that will give you the edge on the competition.Exterior - For the Midnight Club, stunting is a habit and its clandestine Los Angeles garages have all the toys needed to ensure heads turn in this jaded town. From making sure your car is dripping in candy paint, to adding unique body kits and jaw dropping extras, the garage offers practically limitless possibilities to personalize your vehicle with aftermarket accessories and customizable options. Interior - Don't embarrass yourself by pulling up with an outrageously kitted-up car that has a 'me-too' factory interior. Not a good look! You're going to be spending a lot of time behind the wheel, so renovate and make yourself feel comfortable. Beware or Befriend the Local Competition The street racing scene of "Midnight Club" is tough, but tight, meaning that everyone that you meet in expansive "Los Angeles" could just as easily be an ally as an enemy. One thing is for certain though, they are all willing to throw down at the drop of a hat. Just a few of the faces you'll encounter out on the streets are: Karol, Age 45 - A veteran of Moscow's underground street racing circuit, Karol moved to LA in the 1990's after the collapse of the Soviet Union. If you're looking for cars, he's your man. He owns two successful garages and claims to be able to get hold of any vehicle, no questions asked. He also sees himself as a philosopher and will bend your ear if you left him. He mostly races around Hollywood and the Beaches and his rides include a 1975 Datsun 280Z, 1969 Boss Mustang 302, 2006 Dodge Challenger and a 1971 Lamborghini Miura SV. Annie, Age 31 - Annie has a rep as one of the fiercest drivers in the city. She detests posers and wannabes, is intelligent and sharp-tongued and pulls no punches when it comes to cutting the competition down to size. She has been spotted in everything from a 1983 VW Golf GTI, 2006 Pontiac Solstice, 2008 Chrysler 300C SRT-8, 2008 Audi RS4 and a 2004 Ford Shelby Cobra Concept and can usually be found hanging out near Pink's Hotdog Stand in Hollywood along with her crew. Rockstar Games Social Club: Join the Community Being a Rockstar game "Midnight Club: Los Angeles" comes with a huge commitment to the gaming community. To take advantage of all the benefits that come with this players should ensure that they join the 'Rockstar Games Social Club' to extend their "Midnight Club" experience. Benefits will include, but are not limited to detailed player statistics, robust multiplayer leaderboards for all online games modes - plus a host of other special features, including in-game music download opportunities, to be announced at a later date. Simply create an account, link your PlayStation Network ID, set up your profile and you're in. Game Modes As of the time of publishing Rockstar Games has not confirmed the gameplay modes that will be available for "Midnight Club: Los Angeles", but multiple multiplayer gameplay modes, in addition to a deep singleplayer mode, are expected to be available with the game. The anime-style character is able to control a number of different robots, including a mech with treads and a digger. These friendly little robots, known as Servbots, can scout out new items that help in the game-but they must first be trained. Each little robot seems to have its own personality and is prone to laziness unless properly inspired./ Tron Bonne seems to have just the right mix of graphics and gameplay, as well as cute voice acting and a memorable cast of characters. It may not be Mega Man Legends 2, but The Misadventures of Tron Bonne should satisfy fans of the popular series. --Robb Guido/ Pros:/ • Adorable anime graphics/ • Lots of variety and minigames/ Cons:/ • Game is painfully easy near the beginning/

Mission: Impossible

Genre: Military & Espionage
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: For starters, this game is not for people who don't like a challenge. Second, this game is based on the 1980's revival of the show that lasted two years. Fans of this incarnation of the show will recognize the attention to detail put into this game. The game is played from a top down view with you, the player, controlling your agent on screen. I'm not going to reveal the names of the agents but your leader is of course Jim Phelps. The game itself is broken down into top down character levels and chase sequences which remind me of an episode of the show. The challenge factor for this game is really high. Each agent has their strengths and their weaknesses depending on your situation. Sometimes, though, it seems that the difficulty level was cranked up too high for some stages while others can be your typical beat'em up variety. Other than the high yet spotty challenge, this is a great game for one of the greatest game systems of all time. This review will self destruct in five seconds. Good luck, customer!

Mister Mosquito

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: Eidos Interactive
Genre: 3D Platformer
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: It's wrong to love Mister Mosquito. Wrong because of the repetitive gameplay, the lackluster graphics, and the awkwardness of the controls. I could also mention the repetitive dialogue, laughable AI, and interminable load times. And did I mention how short it is? But somehow none of this matters if, like I do, you fall for the charm and originality of this game./ You play as a nameless mosquito whose job it is to suck the blood of the Yamada family. There are only two modes, battle and suck. To suck blood you have to first hover and wait for a target area to flash red somewhere on your victim's body, then swoop in, pierce the skin, and extract blood by twirling the right analog stick. Suck too fast or too long and you're liable to get swatted, a fate you can avoid if you keep a close eye on your victim's "stress meter." If you're spotted, you must battle your victims by trying to bump their bodies'"relax spots," which makes them chill out and forget you're there (this part doesn't make a whole lot of sense)./ The voyeuristic aspects of Mister Mosquito have gotten a lot of attention, especially the infamous scene in which you suck the blood of the Yamadas' teenage daughter as she takes a bath, but the game stops well short of anything that would have earned it an M rating. --David Stoesz/ Pros:/ • Charm and originality/ • Household environments are fun to explore/ Cons:/ • Too short/ • Unbelievably long load times/ • Repetitive dialogue/ • It's difficult to maneuver/

Mortal Kombat 4

Platform: Nintendo 64
Publisher: Midway
Genre: Action
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition:
Edition: Summary: With fighters engaging in martial arts//supernatural combat to the death, the tournament known as Mortal Kombat rages on in this installment of the ultraviolent series. In addition to requisite sequel enhancements such as new moves with which to disembowel your opponent, the two-dimensional graphics of earlier games have been expanded into 3-D. Now rendered in polygons, the characters move as fluidly as when they were digitized footage of live actors, and the previously cramped arenas have been greatly opened up and are more eerie than ever./ An excellent conversion of the arcade game, the Nintendo 64 version is sure to delight Mortal Kombat 4 junkies. In addition to near-arcade quality graphics, unbelievably rich sound, and responsive controls, there are plenty of never-before-seen extras that rabid fans are sure to eat up./ However, those less enthusiastic should pass on Mortal Kombat 4. The gameplay is virtually identical to the 1992 original, and feels hopelessly dated when compared with other fighting games that have gone on to evolve, while Midway has remained content churning out the same old Mortal Kombat. --Joe Hon/ Pros:/ • Excellent conversion of the arcade game/ • Includes never-before-seen extras/ Cons:/ • Parents may object to the violent content/ • Limited appeal outside of Mortal Kombat fans/

Mortal Kombat II

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: Acclaim
Genre: Fighting
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: The original Mortal Kombat reinvented the tournament fighter. So it's really no surprise that the game's company of creation wanted to do a sequel. It wasn't long before Mortal Kombat II arrived in arcades, and before long, it reached home consoles. Read on for my review.
PROS:
-While the original Mortal Kombat only gave you seven characters to choose from, this one gives you TWELVE! The characters returning from the old game are Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Rayden/Raiden (spelling varies in different versions of the game), Liu Kang, and Johnny Cage. You can also now play as Shang Tsung, final boss of the first game (though he has a new body now.) Reptile from the first game is also now playable, although he now has his own set of moves. The new characters are as follows: Baraka, a nomadic warrior with two huge blades on his hands. Kung Lao, an ally of Liu Kang's. Kitana, the princess of the Outworld realm. And Mileena, an evil clone of Kitana.
-Each character has at least three special moves.
-In addition to special moves, each character has a number of fatalities - two regular fatalities, one babality (a move that turns the foe into a baby), and one friendship (which is basically comic relief.)
-The violence is intact in this game.
-In the Genesis only you get a special code that can be used to configure a number of things.
-Each character has his or her own unique ending.
CONS:
-Once again, the game maker goes wild with pallet-swapping to make some quick characters.
-You can't play as the secret characters or the bosses.
-More female characters would have been nice.
-The play control and graphics of the Super Nintendo version are superior to those of this game, but this version has the exclusive code, which will give gamers a tough choice of which version to buy.
OVERALL:
Overall this is an excellent game that more than stands the ten-year test of time. It's also quite possibly the finest game in the Mortal Kombat series. If you've got one of the consoles that hosted this game, then by all means buy it!

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: Midway
Genre: 3D Fighting
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition:
Edition: Summary: Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance brings the MK series a new 3-D fighting engine, adds tons of features and extras, and still offers classic gameplay./ This installment introduces a 3-D battle system that still manages to maintain a 2-D feel. For example, pushing up on your controller makes you sidestep your opponent's attacks, yet it also allows you to jump by tapping up plus a direction. A revamped fighting system offers up to three different fighting styles for each fighter (one includes a weapon technique). The multiple styles provide countless variations of attacks for any given fighter. Different combinations of punches and kicks allow for lengthy and powerful chain attacks similar to the Mortal Kombat of old. Fatalities are also back and are rich in graphic representation./ New fighters join the cast of old favorites such as Sonya, Kano, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Scorpion, Johnny Cage, Jax, Cyrax, Kung Lao, Kitana, Quan Chi, Reptile, and Shang Tsung. The lavish environments surround your fighters with animated backgrounds and rich skylines. On some levels there are even breakable objects and hazards that you can interact with, such as pools of acid--the perfect landing place for a thrown opponent./ In addition to regular modes of gameplay (arcade, versus, etc.) there is an option called Konquest mode. This mode allows you to learn more about fighting styles, read up on each character's personal history, and gain Koins which can then be spent in the Krypt to unlock a host of new characters, costumes, and early concept drawings. The additional content offered with this title is plentiful, including "The Making of Deadly Alliance" and "The History of Mortal Kombat" featurettes./ Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance successfully reinvents the series by dishing up a unique mix of improved graphics and stylized gameplay without compromising those features that made the MK series popular in the first place. --Carlos Rodela/ Pros:/ • Complex gameplay/ • Realistic 3-D graphics/ • Hundreds of unlockable features/ Cons:/ • Weak story line/ • Unbalanced combo system/

MTV's Beavis and Butt-Head

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: Viacom New Media
Genre: Fantasy
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: Beavis and Butthead was fair. Not even O.k. because the game itself was way too easy and I thought that it was going to be funny and it really wasn't. Sure I laughed a few times, but when it all came down to it, the 2 dumbest teens in the world were about as funny as a rock.
That and this game was way too easy. There was no true challenge (with the exception of the hospital board) but other than that, very simple game and for a lot of the more advanced gamers, this wasn't even a walk in the park. It was more like taking a nap on a Sunday afternoon.
The last thing that bothered me about this game is that the ending was better if you lost on the last board (the GWAR concert) because if you lost, it was more like the real Beavis and Butthead. You know, a couple of morons who lost their objective.
This is a renter first. It's entertaining while it lasts, but unfortunately, the feeling doesn't last very long.
