Last Blade 2: Heart Of The Samurai

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Agetec
Genre: 2D Fighting
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: ...how Street Fighter II Championship Edition was too fast.
What can you say? This is an older classic transported over to the Dreamcast. If you've only been playing games like Capcom Vs. SNK series or any of the more recent fighting games, you will be disappointed with Last Blade 2; it's practically expected.
If you're an old school gamer that still remembers when the Neo Geo game system cost well over $700 and its games were selling for $200 a pop, well, you're going to be pleasantly surprised as the nostalgia overtakes you.
It's a fun game, if you take into consideration that it is an older title. I kind of like not having projectiles getting tossed like tomatoes every two seconds. It's a rather refreshing change of pace; god knows Capcom Vs. Marvel 2 is a little on the jading side with thirty different power blasts coming from every which way all at once.
In essence, Last Blade 2 isn't exactly for the young, because the graphics and gameplay are dated, given. However, it shouldn't be dismissed out of hand. It's like a litle piece of history revived. Older fans will be thrilled to play this again. Younger fans may be, too, if they can get past the glam and bam of today's games.
By the way: Hibiki does shows up in Capcom vs. SNK 2, and she can certainly dish out a ton of punishment for a little sprite. ^_^

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: Eidos Interactive
Genre: Third-Person Action
My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Soul Reaver 2, despite its name, is actually the third game in the Legacy of Kain series that debuted with Blood Omen on the PlayStation. It concerns a vampire named Raziel and his quest through time to destroy the evil blood-sucking vampire Kain. It's a complicated and confusing plot involving a mysterious being known as the Elder God, lots of dimensional and time travel, nods and references to the previous games in the series, and plenty of combat, puzzle solving, and adventure. You needn't have played the previous games to make sense of this title's plot (although it certainly helps), so newbies and series vets alike will find this a solid and well-built adventure./ The game is played in third-person perspective, and, like most games of that type, it features a lot of climbing, jumping, and puzzle solving through the fine art of pushing things, climbing on them, and exploring for powerful items. Raziel has access to all kinds of power-ups for his mighty weapon, the Soul Reaver sword that lets him suck the spirit energy from fallen foes (à la Elric of fantasy fiction fame). He can glide using his spirit wings and enter a shadowy spectral dimension at will that allows him to pass through certain barriers like a ghost./ The sword plays a much more central role to the gameplay than in previous installments. For one thing, you can now summon it at will, regardless of your health status. But there are also limits in place that keep you from overusing it. If you suck too many souls, it begins to draw power from you. This makes it important to balance the benefits of using it over other weapons, or even making Raziel use his claws. Raziel can no longer sneak up and kill foes without a fair fight, but combat in this game is more fun than in previous games, so consider that a push. Each enemy combatant fights well, making each fight something to enjoy rather than avoid./ The camera system, often the bane of games like this, is well done. It always keeps important things in front of you yet still delivers the goods, letting you see the artwork and animation in the game in all its glory. The graphics are quite a step up on the PlayStation2 and use most of its advanced features well, especially showcasing the detailed Gothic architecture and some of the advanced lighting effects. The sound, always a strong point in the Legacy of Kain games, is equally strong here, with good music and above-average voice acting./ Legacy of Kain fans are a passionate lot, caught up in the soap opera tale the series tells. Many unanswered questions are answered here, but new ones crop up, and some will be pleased to hear this third game also ends with a cliffhanger, meaning a fourth game is on its way. As a bonus, you'll find a short "making of" feature and some voice acting outtakes on the disc. --Bob Andrews/ Pros:/ • Excellent controls/ • Stunning graphics/ Cons:/ • It's the shortest in the series/ • The story may be too complicated for newbies/

Tactical Arts attacks will be accompanied by dynamic camera angles to further enhance the effects. Players can use these to battle enemies, heal injured party members, and destroy barriers.

The Legend of Dragoon

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Talk about going out with a bang! Sony Computer Entertainment released its four-disc The Legend of Dragoon for the PlayStation only months before the release of that console's successor, the PlayStation2. This very absorbing role-playing game, with hours upon hours of story and inventive gameplay, might just be the last great title for the glorious PSX./ The copious story begins with Dart, a vengeful young man with spiky hair and red armor who embarks on a desperate rescue mission to break his childhood sweetheart out of a castle prison. The two join forces with a knight who is trying to end a war that's destroying the region. Dart soon learns that he is a Dragoon--a human who's privy to the spiritual power of dragons. Like all RPG heroes, Dart is up against impossible odds, but his newfound Dragoon magic and battle skills go a long way toward making the bet even money./ And that's just the beginning. Grab a spare memory card and a comfy chair and be prepared to spend at least 20 hours getting through the first disk (there are three others just like it in the double-wide case). It's hard to sustain a player through this kind of time span, but The Legend of Dragoon takes chances and wins. For example, its battle system is turn based, so you can actually use some strategy, but it also features special "additions," or fighting combos that unfold if you match the X button to that addition's timing. When handling three players' additions, each with unique sequences, it can be quite challenging. You can increase the potency of the elemental magic up to 160 percent by quickly tapping X during your cast. Also, the perspectives often change between battles--players will direct the action from behind the heroes, behind the villains, looking down from above, and off to the side./ There are a couple downsides to the game. First, the stylized transitions into and out of battle mode, while initially cool, quickly become exhausting--especially when running the gauntlet through lesser foes in the wilderness or lower ramparts of a castle. The game's story is built such that you're watching the sometimes goofy dialog as a spectator rather than participating in it. There are a few occasions when the game will prompt you to choose from two different responses, but often either response will bring about the same conclusion. That tightly controlled narrative, however, often works in the player's favor by keeping the game flowing instead of the wandering common in other RPGs, where players waste time looking to each townsperson for direction./ Overall, the game's wonderfully illustrated sets, light exploration and problem solving, and a handful of jaw-dropping full-motion video scenes make The Legend of Dragoon fun to play and hard to put down. --Porter Hall/ Pros:/ • Hours upon hours of story and gameplay/ • Turn-based battle made more exciting by combo-attack-style "additions"/ • Many different monsters, spells, weapons, and items/ Cons:/ • Very linear gameplay offers no chance to affect outcome/ • Stylish pre- and postbattle sequences quickly grow tiresome/

Legend of Kage

Platform: Nintendo NES
Publisher: TAITO
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: This is my favorite Nintendo game (for the 8 bit system). Way before crouching tiger, this games hero was jumping 40 feet through the trees. The music is simple and looped (given the times), but I love it. What a great song!

In some ways it's a game of chance. You never know when you will get a throwing star to the head. However, I have beaten the game many times.

This is also a strange and creative game. There is one special pill that makes Kage pray and all the ninjas die like bugs on an electric zapper.

get some Chicken fingers and fried rice and play this game!

Legend of Mana

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: SquareSoft
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Missing Manual
Edition: Summary: Though it lacks the dramatic intensity of the Final Fantasy series--the crown prince of console role-playing games--SquareSoft's Legend of Mana still satisfies with its beautiful hand-drawn sets and its innovative nonlinear gameplay./ Billed as the sequel to the Super Nintendo's Secrets of Mana, Legend of Mana's story contains more than 60 self-contained miniquests, but generally the goal is to restore the world's Mana, or life energy. Gamers won't need to be obsessive about winning all the quests, but there are some challenges that must be completed if you wish to reach the final showdown. The game begins as players choose either a male or female lead character while a map displays the new lands within the world of Fa'Diel. In each of these lands, players will find items and clues they can use in other lands. The fragmented nature of the game can be disorienting for gamers looking for quick gratification. A diary can be used to keep track of current miniquests, while an encyclopedia neatly organizes the vast amount of story players uncover. Due to the vast nature of this game's plot, you'll likely need these features to stay focused on your quests./ Anime fans will be wowed by the character design and beautifully illustrated storybook backgrounds. The game includes a Pokémon-style monster-raising element, which is surprising for a teen-rated RPG, but it works well. --Porter Hall/ Pros:/ • Pokémon-style monster raising adds nice nurturing element to RPG tasks/ • Nonlinear quest system makes story engrossing/ • Stunning hand-drawn backgrounds/ Cons:/ • Music is at times absurdly overdramatic/ • Second player controls character only during battle/

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages

Platform: Game Boy Color
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Role-Playing/ Adventure
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: One of two new Zelda games for the Game Boy Color, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages is geared towards the cerebral gamer, with its heavy focus on puzzle solving. The Triforce has alerted Link to trouble in the land of Labrynna, where the evil sorceress Veran has possessed Nayru, the Oracle of Ages. Veran travels back in time, setting up events that lead to a world where evil dominates. It's up to you to help Link stop Veran and set things straight./ Game mechanics and menus are similar to those found in Link's Awakening, also for the Game Boy. As in almost every Zelda game, you have to traverse eight dungeons and find eight key items. The harp of time is vital to your quest--it's required to manipulate events and stop Veran's rewriting of history./ Although this game is extremely enjoyable on its own, you'll want to use it in conjunction with its sister title: Oracle of Seasons. After you complete one game, you'll be given a password that lets you begin with all your items, statistics, and progress intact in the other. Certain characters will appear only by playing both games. By using a link cable, players can trade items. Game Boy Advance users will find a store that's exclusive to them./ While this is an excellent game, it might be too complicated for younger gamers or those looking for mindless fun. --Raymond M. Padilla/ Pros:/ • Dozens of crafty puzzles/ • Great as a standalone; outstanding in conjunction with its sister game/ • Nice bonuses for Game Boy Advance owners/ Cons:/ • Lots of reused sound effects from previous Zelda games/ • Longtime gamers might find the story and level design contrived/ • Be prepared for many puzzle-induced headaches/

Edition: Summary: One of two new Zelda games for the Game Boy Color, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons is the more action-focused title of the duo. The Triforce has alerted Link to trouble in the land of Holodrum, where the General of Darkness has kidnapped Din, the Oracle of Seasons. The villain hopes to transform Holodrum into a wasteland by changing the order of seasons. It's up to you to help Link save Holodrum by rescuing Din./ The game features more combat and fewer puzzles than its sister, making it better suited for younger gamers. Its mechanics and menus are similar to those found in Link's Awakening, also for the Game Boy. This is classic overhead role-playing at its best. The key item in this game is the rod of seasons, which allows Link to change seasons at will. For example, an impassable lake becomes a quick stroll by using the rod to change seasons from summer to winter./ Although this game is extremely enjoyable on its own, you'll want to use it in conjunction with its sister title: Oracle of Ages. After you complete one game you'll be given a password that lets you begin with all your items, statistics, and progress intact in the other. Certain characters will appear only by playing both games. By using a link cable, players can trade items. Game Boy Advance users will find a store that's exclusive to them./ While this is one of the best Game Boy titles ever, a truly sublime experience can be had playing it with its companion title. --Raymond M. Padilla/ Pros:/ • Hours of outstanding gameplay/ • Great as a standalone; outstanding in conjunction with its sister game/ • Nice bonuses for Game Boy Advance owners/ Cons:/ • Lots of reused sound effects from previous Zelda games/ • Longtime gamers might find the story and level design contrived/ • Your thumbs will get sore from all the battles/

Light Crusader

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher:
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: Light Crusader was one of the last good RPG's to be released for the Sega Genesis before the system's demise, and while it is by no means perfect, it's still worth playing. The game is presented in a 3/4 isometric psuedo 3-D view in which you venture through underground dungeons rescuing townsfolk. Along the way you hack away at enemies, cast spells, talk to numerous people, and pretty much everything else you can think of in a role playing game. As you can read, Light Crusader isn't original in the least, but it does have it's moments, and it offers a challenge to old school RPG gamers. The game's biggest flaws however are that the hit detection is way off and every time you think your hitting an enemy with your sword you really aren't. Not to mention when you are required to jump from platform to platform you will have a very hard time judging your distance thanks to the game's view. All that aside however, Light Crusader isn't a bad game, and if you own a Genesis and like older RPG's like the original Phantasy Star series, Shining Force, Rings of Power, or Landstalker, than you should give this a look.

The ability to fight stealthily on-foot or from within heavily armored Vital Suits offers two unique modes of gameplay. While on foot, use the zip line to get up to strategic enemy-annihilating vantage point and discover unexplored areas and weapons. Or, jump into your own Vital Suit or hijack an enemy Snow Pirate's Vital Suit to go head to head with enormous and more powerful Akrid foes.
Lost Planet's highly anticipated multiplayer mode lets gamers participate in heated online matches in stages such as "Pirate Fortress" with support for up to 16 players via the Xbox Live¨ online game service. Players are able to select from multiple weapons, unique robotic assault vehicles and play modes including Elimination, Team Elimination, Post Grab and Fugitive.
A Suit of Destruction
Vital Suits (or VS) are machinery specially developed to suit the extreme conditions on E.D.N. III and replace heavy working equipment brought over from Earth at the beginning of colonization. VS are equipped with a power output device that allows them to utilize Thermal Energy collected from the Akrid without any processing. They are equipped with a variety of weaponry and high mobility in order to battle the Akrid, but they can be especially deadly to humans as well.
Different VS allow the player to perform different maneuvers. The basic GT-01 was originally created to assist with aid efforts at the start of colonization. As a result, it is limited in its expandability and armor. Conversely, the GTF-11 was the first VS to be equipped with an advanced posture control system originally designed for space fighters. This allows the GTF-11 to be outfitted with flight propulsion, and as a result it has been heavily used in the current colonization effort.
An Alien Horde
Indigenous creatures to the planet, Akrid have adapted to the extremely low temperatures. All Akrid possess the ability to extract a rare mineral from the frozen ground and chemically convert it inside themselves into "Thermal Energy" and use it as their energy source. Humans discovered the Thermal Energy inside the Akrid and fight them over the valuable resource in order to survive the deadly cold.
A number of different Akrid ply the vast snow fields of E.D.N. Chryatis, for example, is extremely aggressive and has heightened senses. Upon sensing thermal energy that it traces from any living being other than another Akrid, it immediately attacks the source as a threat that must be eradicated. Once in attack mode, the Chryatis won't stop until all traces of thermal energy are gone. While Chryatis is busy eliminating prey on the ground, the smaller Trilid Akrid take to the skies. Weak on their on but strong in swarms, Trilid attack in groups to overcome and confuse their opponents.
However, not all Akrid are what they appear to be. Dongo, a crawling Akrid, has an extremely hard outer shell that forms a nearly indestructible armor. It attacks by curling into a ball and rolling into or over foes at high speed, or by using its large pincers for stomping and crushing. The Undeep Akrid uses tenticles that act as a sort of radar. This allows it to pick up on the movement of Vital Suits from miles away. The most mysterious of all the Akrid, not much is known about these giant creatures.
A Worthy Arsenal
There are many types of weapons available and while some weapons are meant for use while operating on foot, others are meant for being loaded onto Vital Suits for more aggressive pushes forward. The Vital Suit weapons can also be used separately from the Vital Suit and do pack a more powerful punch, but are much heavier, bulkier, and more difficult to carry in combat.
Your standard issue rifle is a machine gun, firing 5.56mm low-caliber high-velocity rounds and allowing you to lay down fire while moving, perfect for taking down multiple Akrid in a hurry! The semi-automatic rifle, on the other hand, comes complete with a high powered scope to allow you to zoom in on your target. Shots from this weapon can even pierce thin layers of Vital Suit armor, should such a confrontation become necessary.
Hand grenades round out your basic arsenal and can be used as both a strategic and "twitch" weapon. They have a standard range and damage and are very easy to use. Due to their round shape, they bounce and ricochet easily, while shooting these hand grenades produces a larger, more powerful explosion- a key strategy in battle!

Lufia and the Fortress of Doom

Platform: Super Nintendo
Publisher: TAITO
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: Well I first bought this game at a pawn shop and never heard about this game let alone series before. Well at first the fighting system was alright since if you kill a monster with a character and you have another character already set to attack that monster it just misses and not attack the other monster. Kinda more of strategic attack system. After dealing with that, just an amazing game. The songs are great especially the last song of the game. I still play the game just to hear it. The story line is great as well and will definitely give you plenty of hours of entertainment. I think I had around thirty to fourty hours and the just doing the basic. Just a great game for the snes.

Lufia: The Legend Returns

Platform: Game Boy Color
Publisher: Natsume
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: Lufia : The Legend Returns was one of the final games to hit the GBC, and the game is simply awesome! The new twisting storyline takes place 300 years after the 1st doom island war.
Once again, Natsume impresses the world with its unique battle system. The system looks complicating, but within the first 2 hours of gameplay you'll adapt to it. 9, yes up to 9 people can fight along your side, and the IP (Item Points) and a new LP (Learning Point) system is introduced. IP are built as you take damage, and when used against monsters it is impressive! LP is used for learning Magic, as well as increasing your stamina.
The game's uniqueness is brought out again in the dungeons. Nope, there isn't a map. Each floor level changes as you pass them, and the trasures of each room are rehidden. While to some this can be annoying, it really isn't; it can be very helpful at times when you are in need of restocking your inventory.
Simply put, Lufia III outstands the world again, and beginners as well as experts are put to the ultimate test. My only advice is that you keep and refer to the instrucion manual; it'll be confusing at first ;)
--A little intro to the game--
The story begins when a cerulean haired fortune teller named Seena enters the small village of Patos. Seena meets Wain, a simply unintelligent yet strong teenager whom lives in the village. They become friends, and set off for the adventure of their lives!

Lunar 2: Eternal Blue

Platform: Playstation

Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Discs Only
Edition: Summary: Lunar 2: Eternal Blue is old-school role-playing goodness at its very best. From the story to the simple battle system, it doesn't bore players with the details that can make newer role-playing games unbearable. No, Lunar 2 won't impress anyone with its likewise old-school graphics, but that's not the point. This game is fun./ The story in Lunar 2 doesn't take itself as seriously as other role-playing games, which contributes to the fun. The game's hero, Hiro, and his sidekick Ruby must help a young girl locate the goddess Althena. The quest turns out to be long, spanning three disks, most of which hold full-motion video cutscenes./ The video sequences in Lunar 2 are probably the best part. They mix Japanese anime with computer graphics and are completely stunning. The in-game graphics, on the other hand, are ported straight from the 16-bit Sega CD, with a few enhancements, so those who like eye candy should consider themselves warned. --Robb Guido/ Pros:/ • Light and fun/ • Super movie sequences that mix anime and computer graphics/ Cons:/ • Outdated graphics/

Lunar Legend

Platform: Game Boy Advance
Publisher: UBI Soft
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Continuing the time-honored tradition of repackaging old console games, the Lunar RPG series has come to the GBA with Lunar Legend./ You play Alex, a young boy who hopes to one day be a Dragonmaster like his dearly departed hero Dyne. One day, a wizard named Nash comes into town, and needs an escort to a nearby shrine in the woods. You, your childhood friend Luna, and your flying cat-like pet Nall accompany Nash to the shrine, and your adventure begins./ Lunar Legend is an indirect port of a 10-year-old Sega CD game. The locations and characters are the same, but the dialog has been significantly shrunk to fit on the cartridge. This is a minus for true Lunar fans, since much of the story is lost. However, even with "Lunar Lite," you get a very satisfying game./ The game play is standard RPG fare: You walk around, randomly attack monsters, explore dungeons, and talk to villagers in various towns for quests and clues. The battle system, like most RPGs, is turn-based, and has some nice additions like the "Arts Gage" system, which allows special attacks after your character makes enough attacks during a battle. Lastly, you can collect cards throughout the game, and trade them with friends via link cable or sell them in various shops. Strangely, that's all you can do with them. It would have been nice if there was a mini card game of some kind./ The graphics in Lunar Legendare spectacular--on par with Golden Sun. The sound is top notch too, though the Luna's singing can get a little tiresome./ If you're looking for an easy RPG experience, or would like to relive part of the classic Lunar Series, give Lunar Legend a shot. You won't be disappointed. --Bryan Karsh/ Pros:/ • Amazing graphics/ • Funny cat-like sidekick/ • Trade game cards via link cable/ • Great story/ • Simple, yet fun battle system/ Cons:/ • A shadow of the original CD version of the game--may upset true fans of the series/ • What use are collecting cards, if there is no mini card game?/
