The King of Fighters Evolution

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: Agetec
Genre: 2D Fighting
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: King of Fighters: Evolution brings new life to an annual series that was getting more stale with each new edition. While it may look like any other King of Fighters game, Evolution adds some new gameplay elements to shake things up. Most notable is the switch from a 3-person team to a 4-person team (technically 3 plus a striker or helper character which can be changed). This gives your team more flexibility to match up better against other teams.
Evolution adds a few new characters and for the most part, they're not lame. The new characters are yet another welcome relief from the same old characters you're used to seeing year after year.
However, one of the most important things they seemed to have fixed is the controls. Evolution feels far more responsive than Dream Match '99 and moves are easier to pull off. While Evolution doesn't move like Street Fighter III: Third Strike, it's a vast improvement over the stiff as a board control of DM '99.
Overall, a good game that might mark the end of another SNK franchise.

The King of Fighters: Dream Match 1999

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: SNK
Genre: 2D Fighting
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: "King of Fighters Dream Match 1999" arrives on the Dreamcast packed with lots of cool features and is complemented by engaging play. Right from the start of the game you have access to 38 playable characters. This total goes up to a whopping 51 when you include all of the different costume variations. And since the "KOF DM99" roster consists of characters from all over the SNK universe, each combatant has a unique fighting style and appearance.
The fighting system is based around "special" and "super special" moves. In a nutshell, you execute a preset number of special moves in order to unleash the fierce power of super specials. This intelligible combination system adds a level of strategy; for a fighting game, "KOF DM99" has plenty of gameplay depth. Complementing the rich fighting system are several play modes including one-on-one fight, two-player versus mode, team battle, survival, and a standard practice mode. As 3-D fighters invade video gaming, 2-D brawlers are becoming passé, but most old-school fighting fans will want to give "King of Fighters Dream Match 1999" a close look. "--Sajed Ahmed"
Pros: Brilliantly designed fighters, with a realistic, yet unique, look Can connect with a NEOGEO Console also running "KOF DM99" Electrifying opening sequence Abundance of special moves and combinations gives the gameplay a high learning curve Cons: Soundtrack is mostly bland, with only a few memorable tunes Despite being polygonal, the game's backgrounds look dated

Kingdom Hearts

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: Square Enix
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Ever wondered what would happen if the worlds of Final Fantasy and Disney collided? It’s an odd concept to be sure, but from the most schizophrenic of acorns the mighty gaming oak of Kingdom Hearts has grown. Legendary role-playing game makers Square have been given unprecedented liberties with the entire Disney universe and have created a game featuring everything from The Nightmare Before Christmas to The Little Mermaid. This is odd enough in itself when you have characters as disparate as Tarzan and Donald Duck teaming up, but becomes majorly freaky when Square thrown in a variety of their own characters such as Cloud, Squall, and Aeris from the various Final Fantasy games. But this incongruity has one side benefit in that the storyline behind the game is by necessity rather vague, which seems to have stopped Square from filling three CDs full of their usual New Age whining about Mother Earth. Instead they’ve spent even more time on the graphics, and the end result is a quite stunning 3-D cartoon./ As for the gameplay, it may come as a surprise to learn that it doesn’t actually feature, as all the Final Fantasy games do, turn-based combat. Instead it's essentially a scrolling beat-'em-up-cum-platformer with exactly the kind of complicated Square-style knobs you’d expect. The game may be a little shallow, but it’s an impressive artistic achievement and to be quite frank any title that allows you to magically summon Bambi out of thin air to attack evil demons of the underworld has got to be worth some sort of recommendation. --David Jenkins/

Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders

Platform: Xbox

My Rating:   Rated: Mature
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: 50 years have passed since the Second Great War of Heroes. The Ancient Heart, the legendary artifact that caused the Great War, was long gone. Legends of the Ancient Heart circulated throughout the land after the Great War, but the slow passage of time caused many to forget the devastation once brought by the artifact. The memories of the dreadful powers hidden within the Ancient Heart, once responsible for deaths of thousands, were beginning to fade. The Papal Court of Ecclesia further discouraged the legends, determining the Ancient Heart to be the work of pure evil, and exiling all who would seek its knowledge. The land of Bersia stood in peace as the former combatants mended their wounds.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

Platform: Nintendo 64
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Classic Games/ Adventure
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: That cute little squishy guy is back in all his pastel glory to sweeten up 2-D life on the Nintendo 64. With 3-D games such as Perfect Dark and Donkey Kong 64 getting the bulk of attention among consumers, Kirby 64 provides a fun change of pace for both young and experienced gamers who don't necessarily need all three dimensions to have fun./ Young gamers will love the bright, colorful graphics in this game, which is 2-D with some 3-D foreground and background elements. Kirby is joined by plenty of friends who will aid in his quest to recover the pieces of an important shattered crystal./ While the levels are a bit too easy for older gamers, the gameplay in Kirby 64 is original enough to entertain all ages. Kirby still has an appetite for enemies, sucking them up and spitting them out, but he can also swallow them, inheriting abilities such as fire and cutter. Also, Kirby can now combine enemy powers, often with hilarious results. For instance, electricity plus stone turns Kirby into an electrifying little light bulb. Sure, you don't need to use all these powers, but they're still fun to play with. --Robb Guido/ Pros:/ • Whimsical 2-D graphics/ • Kirby 64's copy and combine abilities result in some unique and varied gameplay/ Cons:/ • May be too easy and too cute for older players/

Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil

Platform: Playstation 2
Publisher: Namco
Genre: 2D Platformer
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Missing Manual
Edition: Summary: The original Klonoa for the PlayStation was a critically acclaimed 2-D platform game, but it was mostly ignored by consumers. Gamers passed on it partially because of its unfamiliar and unusual lead character, Klonoa, a furry critter with a giant pair of ears tipped with extremities. Hopefully PlayStation2 owners will not suffer from a similar aural phobia because they'll be missing a fine game in the sequel. Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil takes the excellent gameplay of its predecessor and puts it in a 3-D world. The game offers a nice mix of graphics, gameplay, and sound--albeit for a relatively short time./ Fans of games such as Sonic Adventure and Crash Bandicoot will love this title. It plays similarly to those games, but with superior camera control. Although the graphics are technically impressive--excellent use of lighting effects, particle effects, and cel shading--it's the style that really stands out. The bright and playful graphics give off a feel-good vibe without being puerile. Unfortunately, all these lovely aspects are found in a game that most players will finish in fewer than 10 hours. Sure, there are some secrets and puzzles, but nothing that's truly challenging. It's a brief experience, but one of the best on the PlayStation2. --Raymond M. Padilla/ Pros:/ • Beautiful graphics/ • Classic platform gameplay/ • Lovely soundtrack/ Cons:/ • Very short/ • Very easy/ • Text boxes scroll slowly/

Klonoa: Empire of Dreams

Platform: Game Boy Advance
Publisher: Namco
Genre: 2D Platformer
My Rating:   Rated: Everyone
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: The weirdest ears in gaming come to the Game Boy Advance in Klonoa: Empire of Dreams. Klonoa, the supercute critter with limblike ears, must help Emperor Jillius, who has been struck with a strange illness that robs him of the ability to dream. It's up to Klonoa to defeat the monsters that are terrorizing the empire and solve the mystery behind the emperor's ailment./ Featuring 40 levels spanning five worlds, this title mixes up gameplay nicely. Action stages are traditional 2-D platform levels, similar to classic Mario and Sonic games. In these levels, Klonoa runs or rides a hover board through obstacle-filled lands. Boss stages pit Klonoa against a large creature with a hidden weak point. The most engaging levels are the puzzle stages, which require Klonoa to gather three keys to unlock the exit. These stages are very well designed, requiring thought and imagination on the player's part. In order to reach some keys, Klonoa will need to grab certain objects, monsters, or a combination thereof to reach his goal. Because each monster produces a different effect when thrown, and various surfaces react differently when hit, lots of trial and error is required./ Although the game's graphics are very bright, they aren't as detailed as in other GBA games. The sound is excellent, but the cute music and effects--particularly the gibberish language spoken by the characters--might be annoying to older gamers. Those with an aversion to cuteness should just hit the mute button, sit back, and enjoy one of the best platform games for the GBA. --Raymond M. Padilla/ Pros:/ • Excellent level design/ • Good use of the GBA's sound capabilities/ • Classic gameplay that's perfect for fans of 16-bit platform games/ Cons:/ • Sound might be too cute for mature gamers/ • Graphics lack detail/ • Can be finished in fewer than 10 hours/

Knight's Apprentice: Memorick's Adventures

You'll encounter a dynamic and incredible cast of characters and creatures, gaining shield, sword, armor and strength upgrades throughout play. Game features an easy pick-up-and-play style for gamers of all skill levels. Based on the famous Arthurian legends, it's placed in a superb fairy-tale setting with beautiful 3D interactive environments.

Knockout Kings 2000

Platform: Nintendo 64
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Genre: Sports
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Missing manual
Edition: Summary: While it never quite achieves Muhammad Ali-like greatness, Knockout Kings 2000 is nonetheless an excellent boxing game for both the enthusiast and the casual gamer. Fifty boxing legends from the past and present are featured in this EA Sports title, along with world-famous arenas and TV-style coverage. In addition to being able to set up your own fights in the standard exhibition mode, you can play out nine of the greatest boxing matches in history in the game's classic mode. And for those interested in less realism and more pugilism, slugfest mode offers over-the-top, arcade-style boxing./ The real crowd pleaser here is Knockout Kings 2000's career mode. Choosing from a wide variety of options, you get to create your own custom boxer, who can fight his way to the top in career mode or participate in exhibition and slugfest matches. Before career fights, customized boxers can be improved by training, or playing various mini-games. (A memory card is required to save custom boxer data.)/ What robs Knockout Kings 2000 of the championship belt is its unbalanced 3-D graphics. The boxers look great and move fluidly, but everything else appears flat and unfinished. Thankfully, fast game speed and responsive controls clamp down on the sightseeing, which is one sure-fire way to end up KO'd. --Joe Hon/ Pros:/ • Can create your own custom boxer/ • Features realistic and arcade-style boxing/ • Fast game speed and responsive controls/ • Optional 1-button mode for those who don't want to memorize controls/ Cons:/ • Except for the boxers, graphics aren't very pretty/

Kung Fu Chaos

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: Microsoft
Genre: Fighting
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Do you want to party like it's 1979? Well pull up a seat grasshopper, and get ready for Kung Fu Chaos, a silly but fun party game that's basically a kung fu movie simulator. You pick one of eight fighters to "act" in various fighting scenes interspersed with party games--think Powerstone meets Fusion Frenzy. After a scene is finished, you can replay the level as a 1970's kung fu movie, complete with commentary from fictional movie director Shao Ting./ Kung Fu Chaos has solid single and multiplayer play. In single player mode, you can play the Ninja challenge, which pits you against a clan of mysterious evil Ninjas. If you unlock enough areas in the Ninja Challenge, you can choose a character and jump into the single player Miniseries challenge, which has unique tasks for each character. If you opt for multiplayer, you've got the 12 level Championship game, where up to four human players can duke it out. There are also Battle Game, Freestyle, and Rehearsal modes, which can be played in either single or multiplayer./ The graphics and music are decent, not extraordinary. The game has a fun deformed-cartoon style, and the music includes both the theme from Enter the Dragon and Kung Fu Fighting. The voice acting is good too, especially during cut scenes and when characters taunt each other. The frame right stays smooth no matter how many characters are on the screen, which is good, but sometimes there is so much fast action on the screen (especially during multiplayer play), that you can easily lose track of your character./ Those who approach this game as a pure fighting game will be disappointed. The moves are fairly simple, and all of the players only have one special attack. It's meant to be played with pals: get a few friends together and it becomes a terrific kung-fu romp. Fight in Chinese restaurants, ancient temples, and spooky graveyards. Duke it out on a raft in the rapids while a T-Rex is chasing you. Save a princess, and just for laughs, hurl said princess at your enemies. Beat up ninjas in one scene, and throw life rafts to them in another. Power-up by successfully taunting your foes, and hear the baying donkey when you fail. This game is made for a party, and it's undeniably fun.--Bryan Karsh/ Pros:/ • Cheesy kung-fu movie style, complete with taunts/ • Strong multiplayer and single player games/ • Funny as a poorly written fortune cookie/ Cons:/ • Simple moves will disappoint fans of fighting games./
