Jade Cocoon

Platform: Playstation
Publisher: Crave Entertainment
Genre: Role-Playing
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: Let's face facts here. Pokémon games will never appear on the PlayStation since Nintendo has those rights locked up for the next millennium. Still, if you are looking for a game that lets you catch monsters, train them, and guide them through numerous battles, you can still find that challenge on the PlayStation in Jade Cocoon. That is, if you can live without those pesky Pokémon creatures./ Jade Cocoon allows you to seek and collect millions of different monster combinations. You catch the beasts in the course of your quest to save your hometown. Once caught, the monsters help you build strength and power through combat as you prepare for the final showdown./ Jade Cocoon is a graphical tour de force from beginning to end. The animation of the characters and monsters are smooth, and the special effects for spells and other attacks are stunning. The audio is equally impressive./ While the multimedia effects may have held our attention, it was the gameplay that kept us coming back for another round of play. Success in combat relies on the strategic development of monsters, coupled with immediate tactical decisions during each battle. We spent hours testing possible monster combinations, thanks to a well-implemented preview window that lets players preview a monster merger before committing to the change. There's little guidance in the manual on effective combinations, but with a little common sense and a lot of mad-scientist experimentation, you will ultimately prevail. And although this isn't Pokémon, possibly "catch 'em all."--T. Byrl Baker/ Pros:/ • Terrific graphics/ • Detailed storyline/ • Millions of potential monsters/ Cons:/ • Cut-scenes are too long/

James Bond 007 Nightfire

Platform: Xbox
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Genre: First-Person Shooter
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: The latest installment in the James Bond series, 007: NightFire is a worthy sequel to 2001's outstanding Agent Under Fire. The game retains the overall look of its predecessor--including some familiar recurring characters and gadgets--but is designed to feel more like an actual Bond movie than a video game. After the familiar gun-barrel opening shot, you're introduced to the game via a precredits action sequence through the streets of Paris that leads into an original theme song with corresponding surreal imagery./ The pacing of the game is natural, with each objective leading smoothly to the next. You even get to holster your PPK, don a tuxedo, and infiltrate a cocktail party at your adversary's mansion, making small talk with his henchmen, flirting with female party guests, and eavesdropping on secret conversations. Of course, within minutes you'll be shooting your way out of the place to make a daring escape in true 007 fashion, complete with Bond's trademark one-liners. The story line combines espionage, action, and innuendo in just the right proportions to evoke a real Bond-movie atmosphere./ The game's overall playability is improved by some nice attention to detail, not the least of which is the addition of smarter and less predictable villains (they can hear you coming, they communicate with each other, and they're better at finding cover and sneaking up behind you). You also have more tactical options (there are many ways to reach each objective, so the game is highly replayable) as well as a better arsenal of gadgets and weapons. And best of all, the multiplayer mode incorporates classic characters from many Bond movies. More than any other 007 game to date, NightFire was designed with the die-hard Bond fan clearly in mind. --Maile Bohlmann/ Pros:/ • Well-developed story line/ • Authentic Bond-movie atmosphere/ • Great graphics, sound, and music/ • Smart, crafty villains/ • Wide range of controller settings/ Cons:/ • Precredits action sequence is far too easy/ • They still don't have Bond's voice quite right (Maxwell Caulfield?!)/ • Fans of nonstop action might not appreciate the extended cutscenes/ Note: This review refers to the PlayStation2 version of this game./

James Pond II: Codename: Robocod

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Genre: 2D Platformer
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Missing manual
Edition: Summary: This game took me well over a month to complete, and there was a lot of swearing involved! I got a Gameboy Advance for my birthday, and I got a lend of this, as well as Final Fight. I played this nearly every day, picking it up, trying to get through a level, and then getting well and truly hacked off, and giving up. The game that is harder than this is Theme Hospital, which I have been playing since I first got a computer in the mid 90s, and STILL can't complete. I was just about giving up on this game, and when I went on holiday with someone who's an absolute genius with games :) I managed to get him to complete one bad guy level for me, and the finale.

Most of the levels I found reasonably easy, but it was always getting near to the end, just before I collected a password (some of which I had to put in so many times, I virtually memorised them!) that got me. It was always those that I failed miserably at, and the more I played them, the clumsier I got, and the more I failed.

The finale completely floored me though. It got me in such a bad mood, that I needed to go away and do something completely different just to get my mind off it. I frowned so much I'm probably going to need to a good session of Botox! The game got under my skin that much, that I was swearing, and at one point, crying with frustration that I couldn't get through it with the "patience" that was required. The computer genius eventually completed it for me on the plane home, but even he found it difficult, despite having completed it when I went to the toilet to kick something. I was extremely disappointed to find there was no high score bit at the end - I'd been keeping an eye on my score right the way through as well!

I'd highly doubt I'd play this game again, despite enjoying it, it took it out of me that much. I didn't find it Xmassy at all like the previous reviewer mentioned. If James Pond ever gets mentioned to me again, expect to see me quaking with fear, and a nervous wreck at the thought of it.

Jennifer Capriati Tennis

Platform: Sega Genesis
Publisher: Renovation
Genre: Sports
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Missing manual
Edition: Summary: This is one of the best tennis games you will find on a 16-bit game system! In fact, it`s one of the best tennis games on ANY system. In this game you will see, plenty of aces, player control is great, you get plenty of angle on your shots, you get different shot types like slice, lob, top spin, the serves are very effective in this game! So be prepared to see some aces! But this is one thing that makes JCT GREAT! It is actually an advantage to serve. In some tennis games its not an advantage to serve but in Capriati tennis it is, just like it is in REAL tennis! The way this game plays is the best thing about JCT!
Only a few things keep it from being a perfect 5. The net game is just too hard to pull off. when you go to the net you usually get passed. And using different shot types is harder when you`re at the net. the other thing is- you only get Capriati`s name. None of the other players are real. but they look like real pro`s and they have silly names like Supras instead of Sampras, it`s kind of funny. And yes, you can play as a man or a woman. The men do play better in this game. So this is a nice option. GREAT GAME! I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a tennis game for the genesis!

Jet Force Gemini

Platform: Nintendo 64
Publisher:
Genre: Sci-Fi/ Shooter
My Rating:   Rated:
Condition: Cart only
Edition: Summary: No matter how you slice it, Jet Force Gemini is one tough game. But the frustration of playing this epic is tempered by the sheer magnitude and quality found within. Be forewarned, this run-and-gun action-fest is not for everyone. In fact, novices may be better off letting seasoned gamers fight over this morsel./ Jet Force Gemini includes three complete characters, more than 15 unique weapons, smart artificial intelligence (AI), and the rescue of Ewok-like creatures from giant space insects. For those who don't have an extra 30 to 60 hours to burn, JFG feels like the most bloated, uncut Hollywood epic ever. Yes, the game is deep, but not good enough to wade through enormous hours of gameplay. Buying JFG is a commitment, one that will have die-hards playing gleefully for many months, and the rest of us wincing each time we need to restart a level after being annihilated. --Jeff Young/ Pros:/ • An amazing array of gameplay styles, weapons, and bosses/ • Colorful graphics/ • Good value/ Cons:/ • Excruciatingly hard and excessively long/ • Choppy animation/ • Difficult control scheme/

Jet Grind Radio

Platform: Sega Dreamcast
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Third-Person Action
My Rating:   Rated: Teen
Condition: Complete
Edition: Summary: In "Jet Grind Radio", you play a whacked out kid who's completely torqued off about the system. It seems that the city of Tokyoto is not terribly kid-friendly and wants to keep things neat and pretty. You, the skater punk, figure that the only way to rebel is with your inline skates and a couple of cans of Krylon. That kind of attitude can lead to trouble when you're in the real world; but, in the world of "Jet Grind Radio", there are no paint fumes, and it's all done in the name of fun and scoring points.
"Jet Grind Radio"'s gameplay has some of the feel of "Crazy Taxi". As you skate, you see little floating arrows that indicate where you should go (and where you should be tagging). Also, like in "Crazy Taxi", the pace of the game is absolutely nonstop. There is moving traffic in the street, and nearly everything can be jumped, hopped, or ground. Underscoring all of this action is a DJ at the local hip-hop station, who spins cool tunes while you tear up Little Tokyoto.
The game starts out with a training course that's designed to bring you up to speed. Pay good attention to this section; it teaches you the basics, and you're tested on one of the lessons right away. Learning how to hop over obstacles while keeping a rail grind going is particularly helpful.
After graduating into the real game, you have the option of going it cool or easing up and figuring out how to do the flips, splits, and other midair antics that make this game so much fun. Once your skating skills are set, you'll learn the spray-can side of things. You pick up cans of paint as you maneuver around (keep your eyes open--some cans are placed in those hard-to-reach places, so that you'll have to catch serious air to get them). After securing your fill, use the left trigger and the analog to spray as you pass by areas that have been indicated by the arrows.
The game's tunes are right on schedule. Much of the Japanese soundtrack has been retained, with new tunes rounding out the selection. The new playlist additions give the game that special flavor that U.S. audiences crave: Jurassic 5, Mix Master Mike, and Rob Zombie, to name a few.
Much about "Jet Grind Radio" has "classic" stamped on it; but, of course, liking it or not liking it will be up to the individual. With its fresh characters, cool design, great music and audio, and high replayability, "Jet Grind Radio" is likely to lodge itself into the library of many a Dreamcast owner. "--Todd Mowatt"
Pros: Nonstop pace Cool design of both characters and backgrounds Great soundtrack Cons: Some might be turned off by the rebellious theme and graffiti gameplay

Edition: Summary: You say you want a revolution? The setting is Tokyo, the year 2024. Freedom is a valuable commodity, and freedom of expression even more so. The thumping beats and mean streets of the original freeform counterculture skating game Jet Grind Radio are back in Jet Set Radio Future. Choose a character, strap on your rocket-powered skates, and immerse yourself in living, breathing cities filled with opportunity.
